I understand the likely outcome, and I think everyone agrees the NIT would be a disappointment. 2. …but there are degrees of disappointment. Caring about a basketball team isn’t zero sum. The program is in vastly better position than it was a year ago. If IU misses the tournament it will be by a very small margin — flip a game here or there. And IU was in tons of close games. That’s a different sort of disappointment than getting run off your own floor by Indiana State on the first night of the season. 3. If you think IU’s failure to win close games 2019-present is reflective of some unchangeable character that infected the program, I understand being big mad. I think it’s more than likely just a couple things: bad luck, and less talent (especially at guard). 4. The luck, well, just shake your head. The talent can be fixed. IU is the sort of place where it can be fixed without miracles. And one of the big sources of the dearth of guard talent isn’t coaching anywhere right now. 5. This dovetails with the source of some other frustration, I sense: whataboutnextyear? A good question, of course. I don’t know the answer. But Woody did alright last summer, knows more of what to expect and what he needs this time around. IU had the best defense in the conference this year, and I think more guys CMW and co. pick will mean they get better on the other side of the ball. Would just update this to say: IU met my goal for this season, assuming they’re in. That they beat PU, ND, OSU, UM, U of I on the way there? Won two at least in the BTT? All gravy, as is everything else they do this season. Uspshoosier, southsidehoosier, str8baller and 9 others 12 Quote
8bucks Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 So snapped 9 game winning streaks to Purdue, Michigan, 4 game streak to Illinois, won 20 games, 2 in the BTT and making the NCAA. Pretty good first year for Woody. As stuhoo reminded us in the NW thread, he also reintroduced some tough discipline at a time we really needed wins. Very good first year and hopefully we grow from here. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app pappy1865, Chris007, lillurk and 2 others 5 Quote

When was the last time that IU has been playing really good basketball at this time of year? He has kept them engaged during trying times and has them securely in the dance. And, he has done it while maintaining control of the program. For all the second guessing he received for the suspensions before the Northwestern game, the bigger picture is more important than any one win or game. The culture is changing. I, for one, am glad to see it. I’m not as disappointed as I was before, but I had this team winning 24 games. Look at our schedule, it was there. Also, we did not end the season well in general, we’re 3-7 down the stretch. 2 good wins in the bigten tourney has clouded visions a little including mine Maedhros and HoosierAloha 2 Quote

There is plenty of room to interpret the results. While I think when taken as a whole, the team looked much improved over the last couple of years. The glaring exception was the three point shooting. That deficiency alone cost several wins including Iowa. The way they were nearly always competitive, for me, was a significant step forward. woodenshoemanHoosierfan, Ryno6284, HoosierHoopster and 1 other 3 1 Quote

Alford Bailey Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 For the overall lack of quality perimeter play Im happy with the first year. Very easily could have 4 more wins. We were good when X played well. Now this staff needs to upgrade the talent level in the off season. HoosierAloha and lillurk 2 Quote
NOLA Hoosier Posted March 13, 2022 Posted March 13, 2022 One knock down shooter and this is a top-tier B1G (and National) team. Just need to recruit some sharpshooters (for real this time) and we are gonna be a machine going forward. Defense is there, culture is building, just need some talent. That’s winning every close game. It’s easily fixable going forward, I just hope we get kids that live up to their hype or pull a good one from the portal. thebigweave and HoosierHoopster 2 Quote

Demo Posted March 15, 2022 Posted March 15, 2022 https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/33253706/ranking-2022-ncaa-tournament-men-basketball-coaches-players-1-68 Interesting little article. Woody checking in at #3. Probably correct, though you could make a pretty good argument for #2. Also, there is a cliff-like drop off from 4 to 5. IUc2016 and Josh 2 Quote
