Evariste Galois Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 I thought that Woodson was one of the best options (after Stevens of course) - with Matta helping with the collegiate aspect this is looking pretty slam dunk for me. HoosierInParadise 1 Quote
Popular Post FWHoosier84 Posted March 28, 2021 Popular Post Posted March 28, 2021 (edited) I thought Archie was a “home run” and Tom Allen was a “strike out”. What the hell do I know! I’m hoping for the best and encouraged by the Matta’s hire. Here’s hoping Michael Lewis is hired as well. Edited March 28, 2021 by FWHoosier84 pumpfake, ElectricBoogaloo, jmsgws and 8 others 11 Quote

There were 2 grand slams and maybe 5 realistic home runs out there. I'd have absolutely preferred one of those, but if they weren't interested I'll take this approach over going for the mid-major or current assistants with limited/no head coaching success. NO coach is a guarantee, and the ones closest to it would have been unlikely anyway. Feathery, rayl456, 8bucks and 2 others 4 1 Quote
Hoosierfan2017 Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 Really comes down to how well you can recruit, imo. Can Woodson land top 10-20 classes? If he can we’re in good shape. You can win a lot of games if your guys are just better than your opponent’s. Cd71, Feathery, taco corp and 1 other 4 Quote

I mean, that's common sense sir. Woodson knows more for sure since he's been in the league the entire life, that's common sense as well. But will it pay off? Kids want to play for an old fart that hasn't won in the NBA? Kids want to play for a coach and staff that can get them to the NBA. Woodson can deliver a pretty damn compelling message to a recruit and his parents. If they want to make it to the league and get paid, they are sitting across the table of a guy that just spent every day, for decades, drafting, developing, and coaching nba players. He freaking has Thad Matta as a virtual GM. We haven’t announced the other 3 coaches who could be massive names. You’re a 5* recruit who wants to get drafted and youre sitting across the table from Chris Beard or Mike Woodson.... Who you listening to? Be honest. I bought into the concept of if they could do it there, they will be able to knock it out at IU. Give me an NBA coach who is an IU legend who wants to coach here. Along with a great basketball mind like Matta. And I’m sure they will add 3 good assistants. I’m stoked. I’ve been pretty apathetic for a while now. But this is awesome. incrediboy Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 I suspect Matta was offered the job but had reservations about his health so we made a place for him. I'm not excited in any way about Woodson getting the job...but I hope I am wrong. I wasn't excited about Archie (I wanted Chris Mack), but I became an Archie Miller fan because he coached my team. I will feel the same way about Woodson. ALASKA HOOSIER, Hippopotamo, moyemayhem and 1 other 4 Quote

Don't get me wrong, as I said -- I like Thad, and he would've near the top of the list if healthy, but unless we hire a Michael Lewis or similar assistant who can be more involved than an associate AD, I don't get it. As far as I know, Matta won't be able to recruit ... Runs deeper than just what you see on the surface. Matta knows the college game. His role likely will be to help Woodson transition from the pros to college. There's a lot for him to get hold of making that transition. Having a seasoned veteran like Matta makes that transition a heck of a lot smoother. NCAA rules and regs, recruiting landscape, and on and on... PB1230, T White, akumanina and 2 others 5 Quote
coonhounds Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 I was totally against Woodson because of zero college experience but hopefully he can recruit at a high level and get kids to play hard. I guess we got our iu guy finally now we see what happens Sent from my SM-G960U using Tapatalk Quote
