They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

My faith in the IU administration is so deep in the gutter that I half expect a “just kidding” announcement tomorrow. -

Not in the slightest. But IU should show that it has some semblance of standards and send him home now. -

Woodson skipped the pregame interview. Dude is such a loser. Why is he still the coach? -

Getting chills thinking of Wittman running the show with Isiah in a general manager role. You’re talking decades of NBA experience. Recruits will be lining up out the door for those connections. -

Roy Williams didn’t quit his coaching job and take a non-coaching job during those three years, and he also was a UNC alum. Brad Stevens has no connection to IU, he quit coaching entirely, and he’s turned the job down multiple times. He left the college game over a decade ago and reportedly didn’t like recruiting when he was in it. -

“Inside information” makes a forum fun. I have none of my own, so I enjoy reading what others say. But, like anything else, I try to analyze it based on all the information available. The Brad Stevens stuff has never passed the smell test to me. Nor has the Scott Dolson stuff. Doesn’t mean I’m right, it’s just my opinion. -

IU will certainly ask him again. But there’s no reason to believe the answer will be any different this time beyond pure hope But you’re right that so much has changed in 4 years. Stevens quit his coaching job to take a cushy front office job. He’s gonna jump back into coaching at one of the biggest pressure cookers in the country? Doubtful. -

Because there’s no reason to believe that he is an option. He’s turned the job down multiple times and then left coaching entirely. -

Fans would be happy with his stretch at Marquette, imo. We’d probably get restless at some point, but right now we’re a bunch of parched travelers lost in the middle of the desert. He’d quench our thirst for a while. -

Truthfully I know very little about Buzz Williams before he came up in these discussions. However, his results at Marquette, VT, and Texas A&M are all much better than anything we’ve gotten over the past decade and, frankly, better than what IU has done since I became a fan. With our NIL/resources he could probably do even better than he did at those spots. He’s not at the top of my list but IU can, and quite possibly will, do worse. -

Given that players were willing to come play in Mike Woodson’s system of all things, I think we could get players to play on the moon for enough NIL. -

Probably. But we also would’ve been better off if IU had taken the UNC approach to NCAA allegations. Program just can’t get out of its own way, both then and now. -

Every coach comes with risks, even Brad Stevens. Beard’s risks are entirely off the court. There’s no question he’d come here and win a lot of games. Just depends on which risks you’re willing to take, I suppose. -

18-6 at this point… But hey, Scott was just a powerless stooge when Mike Woodson was hired, had his salary raised, was retained for a fourth season, and then was kept for the rest of the fourth season. Don’t worry, though, he totally has all the power now and will make a great hire. -

Cronin/Williams are, imo, the level of coach we’ll likely end up with. Underwhelming but still quality coaches who could have success here. Not home runs, but not the “swing at a hit pitch” that Mike Woodson was. -

Not this again… The new coach will get as much of a chance as he earns. Woodson fell on his face in year three and then attacked the fanbase. It was a wrap after that. -

I’d be happy with him and I think he’d do very well. I’m just kinda tired of hearing about him at this point. He keeps rejecting us for the prom and we keep showing up with a bigger bouquet begging him to change his mind. I’m ready to find the guy who makes us forget about Brad Stevens. -

Yeah at that point your roster is set. I think I might be moving May ahead of Brad on my wish list, though. I just don’t like the way we have to beg and plead with him to take the job. I want someone who wants the job. I don’t think that’s Brad. If it was, he’s had plenty of chances to take it. He not only didn’t take this job, he also left the coaching job he did have for a front office role. Give me a grinder and let’s roll. -

Stevens, Pearl, Few, May, Beard. The Texas Tech and Iowa state guys too probably. Maybe Cronin. Could be other guys I’m just not thinking of. With the portal and NIL I think an above average coach gets us solidly in the tournament in year 1 and rolling in year 2. They won’t have to have a title contender in year 2, but a couple years of under .500 conference ball to start just won’t cut it. That’s possible even if you don’t “win the press conference.” No one was blown away by Louisville‘s hire last year and they’re sitting at 18-6 and 2nd in the ACC. There are just too many recent examples of very rapid turnarounds for the fanbase to patiently wait through yet another slow rebuild. -

IU needs to win the press conference with whoever they hire. The fanbase is about as pissed off/on edge as a fanbase can get after the past 9 seasons during which we’ve won a whopping 1 tournament game. Trot out some middling guy and the temperature will still be scalding hot. Whoever comes in isn’t going to get 2-3 seasons to “figure things out.” They will need to win immediately. -

Mike Woodson is a 66 year old man. He doesn’t need to be coddled with kids gloves. If he’s that sensitive then IU should’ve “retired” him effective immediately. Retiring him mid season because he’s terrible at coaching but then letting him finish out the season is just silly. Rip the bandaid off instead of tiptoeing around big foot’s feelings for the next month.
