  1. Miami is almost disgustingly dirty. But if that’s how they want to do things, let’s give the 7th year sloth a taste of their medicine.
  2. Who here says they expect a national championship in year 1? This team doesn’t even look like an NCAA contender in year 1, and that’s a problem. In no way is it unrealistic to expect a coach to be able to come to IU and make the tournament in year one. Mike Woodson did it and he probably couldn’t name half the players on his team Devries had to replace an entire 13-man roster in part because none of his players or recruits (other than his son) wanted to follow him to IU, which was a red flag. He did a horrible job identifying players to fill the roster. What coach would see Enright and Bailey and think they’re big ten caliber starters? Frankly, I can’t even really tell if Devries is a good enough coach or not because he constructed such a terrible roster. And he’s going to have to rebuild the roster again this offseason because we’re losing most of our players (which isn’t really a bad thing). His high school recruiting has been underwhelming, too, which doesn’t inspire confidence for the portal. People can complain about the fanbase as much as they want, but the fanbase has been the only thing the program has going for it for the better part of the 21st century.
  3. Devries watched Enright every day for two years and thought he was a big ten caliber starting point guard.. that speaks volumes about his eye for talent.
  4. McCollum struggling this year and then his mediocre Iowa team coming into Assembly Hall and belting IU doesn’t really alleviate concerns.. Fan appetite for a rebuild is at zero. IUBB has stunk for a decade. Cignetti took over the worst P4 football team in the country, made the playoff his first year, and then he made the national title game his second year. But iubb fans have been told we need to be patient for 3-4 years so the coach can get things rolling (which never happens).
  5. Devries stinks and should probably be fired but what’s the point? The last few searches show that no big time coach wants to come here. But man Devries has absolutely no juice to him. He do a horrible job building this year’s roster and he has to basically do the same thing again this offseason. His high school recruiting has been incredibly pedestrian. Dude just doesn’t bring anything more than the last few guys did. Oh well. 8 months till the football season kicks off again. Will be here before we know it.
  6. Frankly, I don’t see a point in giving Devries even $10 million. Why spend $10 million to get a fringe tournament team when that’s another $10 million (or $5 million if you want to give Devries a little bit) you could give to the best college football coach in the country? IU basketball just seems like a lost cause. The program is dead and buried. Football makes so much more money and matters so much more than basketball in the current college sports landscape. But my (probably unpopular) opinion is that every single penny of Nil/revenue share should go to football. It’s the only sport that really matters anymore.
  7. Sadly this statement applies to basically every team we’ve had for the past decade.
  8. Probably, but when the program has been grinding since the Obama administration and isn’t in any better of a spot, the fan reaction is going to become “see ya until you figure it out.” The biggest crowd in Assembly Hall this season is going to be to watch a football game…
  9. I was one of the biggest Woodson haters, but I can’t find it in myself to become a Devries hater. What’s the point? The Devries hire showed that no one was coming to save iubb. If we fire him after a few years, recent history shows the next coach won’t be much better. I watch a game like tonight’s second half and just come away thinking yup, that’s IU basketball. The iubb fanbase gets a lot of flack, but apathy is 100x worse than misdirected passion. Apathy is right where the fanbase is going.
  10. This team just isn’t very good. Devries built this roster like he was heading back to the MVC, and that’s not going to work in the Big 10. For better or worse he’ll have the chance to build a better one in the portal a few months from now.
  11. He didn’t even do anything, though. He came to Atlanta to support his new team, and then some rondo took a picture of him and posted it. CFB Twitter has been bugging out ever since we belted Oregon. They can’t handle the new superpower. If Twitter was to be believed, we’re only good because we’ve hacked the other team’s headsets and know all their plays.
  12. McAfee has grown on me (in part because he’s been supporting IU), but Joel Klatt is easily my favorite. Herbstreit leading the poll is wild to me. He’s awful.
  13. Alberto isn’t his brother. He’s several inches shorter and doesn’t have the arm. Maybe he can be a successful college quarterback, but the position is far too important to risk going into the year with an unknown guy, particularly in the portal when you can go out and get a guy with nearly 10k career yards at the Big 12 level.
  14. No, I want to be Alabama or Ohio State, win 10+ games a year, and be in the national title conversation more often than not. Since iubb went to the sweet 16 in 2016, we’ve had four coaching staffs in 10 years and been lousy under all of them. Devries is infinitely more likable than Woodson, but this season is looking like a new version of the same show we’ve watched for the past decade. It’s hard not to think this is just what iubb is now. Money could fix it, but if you’re donating, say, $1 million to athletics, why give it to Devries instead of Cignetti?
  15. Devries picked every single player on this roster, and he hired his staff. If they’re MVC caliber then that’s his fault. At the end of the day, though, who cares. IU is a football powerhouse now. Every available resource should be poured into the football program. Giving more than tuition and housing to the basketball players is a waste as evidenced by the past decade of IU basketball.
  16. Coach Cig snatched ND’s chain. Have fun being second fiddle in Indiana.
  17. I’m really happy for Ole Miss after dealing with the Lane Kiffin fiasco this year.
  18. Herbstreit having to pretend all game that he’s not pissed off by this outcome makes it all the sweeter.
  19. In football? No, because IU doesn’t have a rich football history. But IU was 16th in the country in attendance Crean’s first season despite going 6-25 with a bunch of walk ons1 because people still wanted to watch IU basketball. NIL has created a system where every player in the country is a one year rental, and sometimes the players don’t even finish out the year. If you could create a system that paid players and wasn’t a complete disaster? Sure, I’d have no problem with that. I don’t care if players get paid. It’s not my money. Doesn’t affect my bottom line. But the college sports landscape that it has created really sucks.
  20. The revenue is because of the universities. The players, except in very very limited exceptions, are interchangeable. Look at the attendance/viewership for minor league teams. It’s nothing compared to college sports. 15k plus people aren’t packing in Assembly Hall to watch Tucker Devries (no offense to him). They’re coming to watch Indiana University. 100k people wouldn’t go watch the Tuscaloosa Tide play the Athens Bulldogs. I’m not against NIL in theory. If people want to buy a player’s autograph, or if Mother Bears wants to pay Anthony Leal to advertise pizzas, no problem with that. But the current “NIL” landscape is so far removed from that. It’s a complete mess, and it’s only going to get worse.
  21. When have the fans been wrong? Mike Davis, Tom Crean, Archie Miller, Mike Woodson. None of them have done anything post-IU.
  22. Don’t attendance numbers count tickets sold rather than butts in seats? IU basketball will always sell tickets, and I don’t think the university really cares much if people actually show up for games, but the balcony especially has been a graveyard all season. Patience is harder to preach in the NIL era, particularly to the same fanbase that watched a coach immediately turn around the worst P5 football program in the country. It’s not Devries’ fault, but Crean’s last sweet 16 team was a decade ago. Happy moments have been few and far between since then. Fan appetite for yet another rebuild is virtually nonexistent. Certainly Assembly Hall will be packed if the basketball team gets things rolling again, but until then I expect more of the same mediocre Assembly Hall we’ve seen recently.
  23. Apathy is the worst thing for a program, and that’s exactly where the basketball program is at this point. The Woodson hire showed IU wasn’t serious about basketball, and the Devries hire showed that no one was coming to save the program from itself. Maybe he’ll do well, maybe he won’t. So far his roster construction stinks, his high school recruiting is meh, and the team on the court is even more underwhelming. And honestly, oh well. He seems like a nice enough guy (and isn’t a raging a** like the last guy), so that’s an improvement. I’ve largely given up on IU basketball ever being anything more than a middling program. I like football a lot more than basketball as a sport anyway, so IU football’s success makes it so much easier to get over IU basketball’s mediocrity. You could throw more money at basketball to try to solve the problem, but that seems foolish to do when every dollar put toward basketball would be better off going to Cignetti. I don’t think we’ll see a pissed off IU basketball fan base like we saw with Woodson. Fans just won’t show up and we’ll keep seeing a quiet, half empty Assembly Hall. It stinks, but you can only keep enthusiasm for a dead program going for so long. Kind of ironic that IU football’s success dealt the final blow to the basketball program. Who woulda thought.
  24. I’m just not a fan of the G5s getting auto bids. You end up with half the first round games being total jokes when way better teams were left out of the playoff. You’ll still have blowouts with P4 games, but everyone knew going in that these two would be landslides (Ole Miss already destroyed Tulane earlier in the year, for example).
