This thread if it really does take 3 more weeks to name a new coach:

IU is making an investment when hiring the next coach.  The analogy doesn’t really apply.  It isn’t about ‘forgiveness’.

There are two parts to this... forgiveness and accountability. Just because you said "I'm sorry" doesn't absolve you accountability for your actions. The event was investigated and documented. UT saw fit to terminate him over the event. He walked away rather than challenge them for the buyout money. All of those factors say something to me. The DA ultimately dropped the charges. There could be any number of reasons for that. And he has not been convicted of anything in relation to that episode.

We're only 2 years removed from that alcohol-fueled event, and if one is to believe the reports on the internet (yeah, could be suspect/spun/exaggerated), it doesn't appear that the alcohol situation has changed... so the obvious question is "will it happen again?" and we can never truly be sure. All we can say is "it has not happened again yet".

Yeah, he can coach... but at what cost? We all make mistakes, we all do things that we regret, etc... but there are levels of transgressions, and for me, this is still a big deal. For me, it's a matter of personal judgment - if he has a problem with alcohol (and he has to recognize whether or not he does), then I believe that he's one "bender" away from another event.

Whether to hire him to coach at your school or not is a decision for the administration to make... but I personally do have a problem with hiring him because we don't know if/when it happens again... and it's not a risk that I am willing to take.

With that, I'm done with the Beard discussion. Dolson will decide. Then I will decide where my fandom will lay.

If you can get Beard for maybe 4 million then try to run it by the president. But both know their jobs would be on the line. I've already heard of professors on campus who said they would have people follow him around town taking pictures of him getting drunk like he still does in Oxford. He would make it through the football season. It's a no go

There's a word for that....stalking. For the record Beard is not the guy I think IU will hire and probably shouldn't but if someone actually did what you are saying here they may have as big of issues as Beard and his drinking.

See what I mean? Knight was objectively a terrible person and you don't care because he won. Thanks for proving my point.

I am not interested in moral judgements. I do not think the things Knight did make him “objectively a terrible person.” I don’t even think what Beard allegedly did does necessarily either. Nobody is irredeemable and I’m not the one who has to forgive / make these calls. Knights bad behavior was after he already had the job. Big difference #1. Knight was fired ultimately because of risk management… his results no longer justified him being here. He wasn’t fired/not hired because of his morals / off court record. Not hiring Beard isn’t about a moral judgement, it’s a risk management decision IMO. I’m actually pleased they are apparently meeting with him and doing due diligence. If they hire him, I will accept they know more than me and are comfortable with him. If they don’t hire him, nobody can continue claiming IU is so much “holier than thou”

People gloss over the fact that his fiance went in to the room where he was sitting grabbed his reading glasses and snapped them.  How does she have a bite mark on her arm?  Did beard just go up and bite her arm?  No she likely jumped on his back and he did it in self defense.

Far too many readers gloss over Beard's report that she went after his "private parts".  I'm not saying that excuses ANY of his behavior and the marks on her body; however, pain is a great motivator.

Coach Bell respects RMK

Pete Bell is no better than Sampson, a cheater.  He admitted it himself in the press conference.  No way I want him leading our program.  I do know he does reside in Naples though, so there is that.

IU has already had to fire one coach for abusive behavior who...checks notes...was a mentor to Chris Beard.

They've fired a football coach in the last decade for abuse and mistreatment towards injured players.

It's currently in the middle of a lawsuit where former athletes are accusing a team doctor of inappropriate conduct.

These are good points.

Thank you! The SEC has been absolutely loaded the last two years. I'm sure this has effect.

A good chunk of his losses last season were by a big margin.  In particular, his team was really bad down the stretch (think they lost six of their last seven).  Really went from being close to a tournament lock to being out.

Professors here in town want Whitten gone, if she ok's the hire of Beard, that is all they need to push her out the door.

You're not aware. But if for some weird chance, we hire him, we'll see what happens here.

I'm very aware that I've not seen photos of him in the bar getting hammered. Seems to me that if he's such a habitual booze hound there would be proof beyond just saying that he does it.

I mean, what I haven't seen is just as solid of proof as what you and a couple others have suggested about him being a rampant drunk around Oxford.
