Popular Post Magnanimous Posted March 20, 2021 Popular Post Posted March 20, 2021 I don’t totally get Stevens trying to placate the Southie crowd with his Masshole comment and SNL-level stereotypes. The guy has an accent befitting the stock boy of a Terre Haute Kroger, and it’s those same Massholes that want him fired. Vauxhall and IU, jonz44, FWHoosier84 and 5 others 6 2

Golfman25 Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 look guys, the only one who matters regarding a "done deal" is Brad Stevens. He is in total control. He could have told Donolson that the deal was done, and when he went to quit, things changed. They often do. So it could be entirely true that we had a "done deal" and that Stevens backed out after it was done. IF that happened, the only credibility loss is on Stevens. And for those that asked, you can substitute Bill D if he also indicated the deal was done. Those of us old enough to remember the hapless Chicago Bears many years ago (1999). They had "hired" Dave McGinnis from the AZ Cardinals. It was announced, press conference scheduled, and they even changed his voice message. And then it didn't happen -- the guy walked at the last minute over a salary dispute. So these things happen -- candidates flake out sometimes. Ranger78 and FWHoosier84 2

What he said just still seems so strange to me though. Maybe I need a guys perspective. Are there any guys here that were born here that are in their mid 40’s that have been big IU fans and have seen the things he has that would turn in their Hoosier card to be a Masshole and go from being a Colts fan to Patriots fan? I am a huge IU basketball fan. After graduation from IU, I went to Madison Wisconsin and worked for a few years. Then took engineering at UW-Madison. Followed IU basketball and football and cheered for IU! Always have, always will. But, I cheered for UW football and hockey, too. Had season tickets to both. When going head to head with IU I always cheer for IU. I cheer for the Packers, too. Then went to Dayton Ohio for a job. Cheer on University of Dayton basketball and Wright State. Daughters went to Bowling Green State north of here while Dakich was coach. That is another story. When I was 19 and after freshman year at IU-B, I joined the Navy. From Chicago boot, and CT and VA and up and down the east coast and overseas, I followed IU basketball. And watched with interest Duke, NC, NC St., CT etc. Even went to a Nebraska vs Army game at West Point. Fun until kickoff. Final score Nebraska 77 - 7. Have family that went to Harvard. One is a teacher in Princeton NJ. I do not cheer for the Patriots. I can understand that people that have lived up there in Boston could get excited for that franchise. U Mass, too. Brad Stevens is gaining life experiences and changing. I can understand why he would adopt and begin to love to follow new sports teams. Doesn't seem strange to me. I follow the Bengals and the Reds. Not too exciting recently. I watch the Colts but not serious about them. They started after I left Indiana. Used to watch St. Louis Cardinals. Pro sports is ok. College sports is crazy! I cheer for all B1G teams except Purdon't. Doesn't mean that he is cutting off ties and forgetting his roots either. He kind of said that. Edited March 20, 2021 by Dave from Dayton T White 1

I'm an IU alum who grew up in Indiana, but 30 minutes from Chicago and 2.5 hours from Indy -- so I more identified with Chicago teams than Indiana teams. And the Colts didn't even arrive until I was in high school anyway. I've lived in Minnesota, Texas and Virginia and while I've taken a minor interest in their teams (except for maybe the Vikings), I've never wavered in my support of the Cubs, the Bears, the Bulls, the Blackhawks and of course, collegiately -- the Hoosiers. Maybe it's easy for some to switch allegiances, but after so many years, I sure can't -- even though most of the time, having a vested interest in those teams those teams can be very painful! Hell no....it’s gut wrenching for me that IU basketball sucks. Grew up in Bloomington went to Purdue. If he cared about it as much as I do there isn’t any way he could have said no.

There are several good coaches out there that can take IU back to a top program. Now isn’t the time for self loathing and dispair. It’s time for resolve, intelligence, and decisive decision making. Stevens was #1 on the list but there are others on that list and feelers put out to them prior to Archie being let go. All is not lost. Boosters aren’t spending that kind of money without the full picture of who the top target is and what’s the backup plan if the top guy says no. Being a fan of a team can involve things that have nothing to do with where you're from. I've lived my whole life in Indiana, but not a Colts fan (or really any NFL team). Not a Reds or Cubs fan either, Yankees fan because I remember hearing my dad tell stories of Mickey Mantle. I know someone that was a Chief's fan, switched to Broncos with Manning (and back). Maybe he liked how they play or just saw more of them or met people involved with the team. GaryP and Dave from Dayton 2

But I lost a lot of respect for the guy with that performance at the press conference. So I'd be much less enthused about it today than I would have been yesterday. If he views himself as a ma$$hole, I have no reason to root for his success anywhere other than IU. Same for me. Even if he changes his mind, I don't think I want him any more. The very reason we loved and wanted him so bad was obviously he was (and is) a great coach, AND he is a homegrown Hoosier who we thought would proudly represent the Hoosier state. Fans in Indiana are the ones who would love and back him up through thick and thin. It's completely ok he says no, but after a vague pregame interview on Tuesday, the way he came out and rejected IU yesterday just didn't sit well with me. I don't think any big time IU booster would want to spend a dime on him in the future. Yes I get it he wants to be where he is now. Good for him. But he lost a lot yesterday....something money can't buy. Indiana8585 and Dave from Dayton 1 1
