On the surface they appear to be similar in accomplishments. I ask not advocating for or against, just as a guage. My pedestrian view is that GM wouldn't be in the top tier of names we've tossed around, but also not in the bottom tiers either. I was actually just thinking about this yesterday in relation to Otz but it works for McD too. I’d put them in the same category of pretty dang good coaches but probably not elite. The difference is Painter played at PU. Was coach in waiting. Is intimately familiar with Midwest and Indiana recruiting. Has a system and recruits to it very well. Take any of those advantages away and he quickly turns out pretty mediocre results like he did in the post Hummel years. It wasn’t until he hit his Swanigan/Haas/Edey recruiting stretch that he started looking near elite again. So that’s just one of the many ways a good coach on that level could come into IU and stumble. thebigweave, theriverpilot and pumpfake 3

They showed a stat that Creighton’s turnover margin is minus 4.4 per game, which is one of the worst in the country. They had 12 TOs lol Must suck to play poorly and win by 18, and be 21-9. It'd really suck to be able to shoot like this.... lillurk, BGleas, go iu bb and 2 others 5

cbp4iu Posted March 5, 2025 Posted March 5, 2025 So our new coach probably doesn’t want anyone back on our current team correct? Then again Mgbako’s Reneau and Rice’s portal reel from last night probably lost them each 50k-100k Hoosierfanyuh 1

He’s a better coach than Woodson but the seasons this year aren’t as far apart as we’d want to really get the fanbase behind a hire like that. RaceToTheTop and VFury 1 1

I am a late 80s IU grad and I have been a huge fan since the mid 70s. In other words, I am in the age group that grew up witnessing the potential of this program, and firmly believe everything is still in place to still be achieving at least close to that level (with the right coach, of course). I have a funny feeling that many my age, and especially those of us in northern Indiana, have little interest in 6-8 years of somewhat improved but still underachieving mediocrity, with a promise of better days ahead if we just hang in there 6-8 more years, especially given that there is an IU grad killing it in his first year just to the north of us. I am about at the end of my rope after 30 years of donating to and supporting a program that has consistently made decisions that led to underachievement. So I really hope the administration is taking into consideration the chance they may lose a chunk of the fan base if something like this is in their plans. I appreciate your point of view on this and response. Do you think McDermott would be like late 90’s IU teams as a ceiling? I see him as early 90’s IU teams who competed for big ten titles and were threats in the dance. That is what I think he would do here. Not just make the tournament.
Popular Post CSP Posted March 5, 2025 Popular Post Posted March 5, 2025 I see McDermott as one of the "lower risks" hires we could make, his ceiling just might not be as high as we want. JustWinBaby, HoosierTrav, moyemayhem and 9 others 12

You certainly wouldn't see any of the head-scratching coaching moves from McDermott as seen under Woodson, but then again, that could be said about any coach on the search list. CSP 1

I think his coaching acumen is strong enough but does anyone know how he has done upgrading talent in the portal and developing talent via HS kids? Here, I presume, he will have access to a lot of $ to recruit but the portal recruiting seems to be a different strategy and I wonder how he has done evaluating and then getting results that route. I liked Cigs approach to recruit production over potential and wonder how a guy at a "smaller" school will do with those resources here BGleas and Willkie71 2

I realized just how different Purdue and IU were by how they treated their religious zealots. I started my post-secondary career at Purdue. The fire and brimstone preacher was most often called "Brother Max" by the students there. When I got to IU for grad school, I remember one of my classmates telling me about some guy screaming at students who was called "Mad Max." I thought, "That's a weird coincidence." Sure enough, same guy, of course. I wonder what his schedule was at the different campuses around the state. He seemed like he was at Purdue A LOT during my 4 years there. I didn't see him all that often at IU... thebigweave and mamasa 2
