We can pull a coach from UCLA but not Baylor?!?!

The strong Christian/religious tie to Waco cannot be understated. The wife is especially tied to that, and I’ve read that she makes the decisions. Baylor is a good job, pays well and Drew’s had some success.

UCLA is a lot like IU but without the NIL component. Since Wooden and Gilbert (including pay-for-play), what has UCLA actually done to tetain their blue blood status?

What’s impressive is when you compare Cronin’s results to those of IU over the last 20+ years.

It’s astounding to me that fans of a program as underachieving as IU would be less than thrilled with Mick Cronin results

No titles in 22 years and 1FF looks identical to our results.

I agree, Cronin will get us to tourney.

I had hoped we wanted more.

Cronin is definitely an upgrade. I'm not arguing that at all. He would be a choice that I wouldn't be upset with.

With that said, I would hope dolson has gone through about 7 people before it got to him. Also why pay that huge buyout, if you are just throwing money at the problem you might as well go the mid major route again and hope for a hit

If may says no, call oats just for the hell of it. Then maybe Drew

Then throw as much as you can at McDermott.

Would McDermott leave for IU?  He seems to be in a good spot. How is their NIL?

I know his name is in every coaching search cycle, but curious if he truly wants to move on?

I have no way of knowing if the first two sentences are true.

Ucla has NIL lol ... they brought in a top 10 class.

What have we done to retain our blue blood status!?!?! UCLA been to 5 FFs since 1995-- Indiana 1.

I dont know if he would but once again it just depends on how much IU is willing to throw at it. I think his buyout is high, but maybe not higher than Cronin?

Give me McDermott all day every day over cronin

It has been reported he wanted to move on before he signed his last extension.  Not sure about NIL however their fanbase supports them.  They are 6th in overall average attendance ( IU is 7th)

Notice a difference between him our head coach interviews

Cronin had detailed answers, call backs to earlier game situations and players.  Always critical of himself and looking to improve.

Wants the league to go to a 1 day break between games on long road trips.  PAC 12 was doing that.  Stresses that they are preparing to win the tournament, that’s their focus.  1 day turnaround mimics the tournament so better prep for that format

Points out that he is 9-3 in tournament games at UCLA

I’m not sure who is realistic.  I don’t have that kind of info.  I mean, Stevens and May would be home runs to me.  Oats, I’d take a big swing at him after that.  Drew.  I’d love Beard if he didn’t have the baggage.  I’m not sure who would excite me a whole lot after that.  I think if you’re going to reach down for a mid major coach, you better absolutely do all your homework as to everything about his approach and absolutely not screw it up this time.

Your thinking aligns with most I think: we take the big swings for sure and “make them say no”.

But assuming they say no, what then? That’s where I think, given the last decade and the IU basketball brand, they have to err on the side of a proven commodity versus an up and comer. I don’t know if our fan base can handle 4 more years of mediocrity. That’s why I think Dolson ends up going for a proven, consistent winner.

Only about four of that 14 would ever, in a zillion years, be a viable candidate for IU.

On what planet are guys like Oats and Self even remote IU possibilities, and on what planet would Crean, Penny, or Bryce ever be considered?

I would love to get a guy like Bill Self. However, I doubt he ever leaves Kansas for IU for nothing else but for how we handled KS and his recruiting scandal. IU would never protect Bill Self the way Kansas has, and he knows it.

Since IU’s last title, UCLA has won another title, made four F4s and tons of appearances in the second weekend. Alford has as many S16s at UCLA as Crean had here in about half the time.

What’s Tim Floyd doing these days? IU could probably get him

The rehab job I was thinking about, courtesy of the Wichita State game, is Gregg Marshall. He was quite the candidate around here in the Archie cycle. You know a dude is an irredeemable POS when a guy was as successful as he was and when he goes away no one EVER tries to bring him back. Whatever the Chris Beard concerns are, he ain’t Gregg Marshall.

It’s a tough choice between proven, consistent winner vs. potential for highest ceiling.  I think you have to analyze it coach by coach at that point and hope you make the best decision.  Can’t afford another bad hire.
