The Ballo/Reneau pairing is primarily an issue on the offensive end. The Ballo/Reneau/Mgbako pairing gets us exposed on the defensive end. Basically playing two 5’s and a 4 so we can’t guard the perimeter and then our “size” doesn’t rebound because they’re out of position. -

This team is so much better and fun to watch with a 1 big lineup. Here’s hoping Mediocre Mike doesn’t blow it when Reneau returns.

Them starting alongside each other is part of the problem as it makes it harder to maximize the time where they don’t share the court. If you assume each should play 25-30 minutes a game then they HAVE to share the floor for at least 5-10 minutes a game. But since we start them together, this is basically the baseline so the decision is being made that having the share the floor actually makes us a better team. This seems wrong to pretty much anyone who watches basketball. -

I was screaming for Javon Small, Ryan Conwell, and Danny Wolf for anyone who would listen. -

Nothing I say here is in defense of Woodson :) Im beyond done with the guy. A real coach, like the guy up in West Lafayette, would stagger his bigs explicitly if he was in a situation like this. See: Edey/Trevion Williams.
-
The thing for me in that Penn state game was that it WAS fun to watch. The game is so much better to watch without 2 back to the basket bigs clogging the lane and just waiting for the post feed. We still fed Ballo in the post PLENTY, especially when they had their backup big in, but the offense was more free flowing and we actually had personnel on the floor that could defend the perimeter.
-
They’re a bubble team. That’s a good win for IU given the current state of things. Not a good win for where we wish the program were but until there’s a coaching change this is how it is.
-
Let’s see what happens at Penn State. I’m expecting the typical Woodson team on the road game: get rattled then completely get the doors blown off. If the team somehow wins that game though then that will move the needle on my own optimism. The Rutgers game did nothing for that.
-
My best guess is that we actually do okay against Rutgers since they’re young and aren’t strong defensively this year. But Sunday, at Penn State, we’ll get embarrassed in true Mike Woodson fashion.
-
Not gonna pay for Peacock this time around to watch lazy basketball. Hope the team surprises me.

Meanwhile, let’s check in on how Dusty May is doing over at Michigan.
-
Although if we wanted to truly swing for the fences then I’d go and try to make Nate Oats an offer he can’t refuse.
-
Dusty May already surpassed Howard’s win total from last season and he’s in year 1. Turnarounds can happen immediately in todays game with the right coach. And we could very likely still get May at the end of this year.

If our program were run by adults we’d have a headline about Woodson like this: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/43168609/sources-jim-larranaga-talks-miami-stepping-down
