" Well sorry coach that other program has produced Multiple NBA draft picks."

I know Woodson is a lazy recruiter BUT he was a HC in the NBA and coached guys like Josh Smith and Carmelo Anthony. And produced draft picks in TJD and JHS. Transfer Portal recruits and prep kids take that into consideration in addition to the money. McCollum won't have that.

That’s fine.  It will come.  It’s first building with the type of kids you want to run that system effectively.  This is something we have lacked for years.  A foundation for the system.  We need that.  Then you sprinkle in the NBA like talent that fits that talent.

I think the timing of the Goodman info drops are interesting.  Both times, they came after a groundswell of chatter from the fanbase that BS is coming to IU.  It may mean nothing but it could also be to calm things down until the season is over.  May be wishful thinking on my part but until it comes directly from BS himself I’ll hold out hope.

....you can almost guarantee a "fun sucker" post/posts when we get positive info. It's literally within an hour. lol

McCollum can just plop down his D2 championship rings and recruits will come play for IU for a scholarship and a few hundred a month in food vouchers.

Pretty much no coach making their first jump to P5 does. Woodson landed three decent recruits in four years (and calling Tucker ‘decent’ might be a stretch). McNeeley wasn’t committed to IU because Woody puts shooters in the NBA. Not sure this argument works for Woody specifically, but it’s valid when talking about coaches who are actually good.

That said money talks now. No high level kids are taking less money to transfer to Self or Oats or commit to Cal. Dickinson didn’t go to Kansas to play for a legend. He went for 2 million dollars, maybe TJD and Ware had an impact on Ballos decision. I’d wager it was more about we were willing to pay more than UNC or anyone else on the market. It’s a completely different landscape now.

Very good point…and one I made earlier. Drake historically is a great program…much like Dayton. FAU not comparable.

Respectfully, what does Drake being historically great have anything to do with what McCollum’s done this year? You just accused someone of minimizing Dusty’s accomplishments. Is this not doing the exact same thing?

He had 1 player return from last year’s roster….. How exactly is Drake’s historical achievements helping him in that scenario? Indiana has won 5 national titles…How has that historical dominance worked out for Mike Davis, Tom Crean, Archie, and Woody?

I love Dusty May. I think he’s an excellent coach. But I believe McCollum is a generational coach. His peers seem to agree with me. He can win at any level of basketball.

When you say the the two are not comparable, I tend to agree. One is better imho and the other is Dusty May.

Note: I have no idea how I jacked the formatting up this bad.

based on results and not feelings... he'd probably just win with whoever he has on the roster.

We'd be INSTA BETTER with his best two "D2 guys"

....could be a Kelsey type coach with similar results. I totally think Kelsey REALLY lucked out by landing super stud, Hepburn as his pg this year.

He also set the Drake wins record by 2 in year one at a school he had to win 29+ to do it. I was skeptical, but all you have to do is actually watch them play. The guy can flat coach basketball.

I’ve really warmed to McCollum after watching their last 6 games or so, I think slow offense has us all getting flashbacks of Archie and pounding it inside over and over with MW. The Drake offensive movement is very pleasing and almost always leads to a good look. I also would expect Dolson to surround him with the people needed to make a transition like this. Hell, he tried for Woody who ran them off. I’m sure McCollum knows where he needs help adjusting and I would trust Dolson to make it happen. I’d be pretty excited to see who the assistants/GM would be with that hire.

I really, really , really hope Dolson doesn’t surround McCollum, if he is the hire, with help.  Forcing Fife and Matta upon Woody was basically an admission that we hired the wrong guy.
Any coach hired in Fife’s previous position, as an example, should be 100% the decision of the new head coach.

Yes even though the jump from D2 to D1 is sort of big, he’s had huge success at Drake with a team he built and took with him. He doesn’t have P5 experience but this is an example of “don’t overthink it” IMO. Give a guy like that our resources and I think recruiting concerns are largely covered. Don’t have any concerns about his ability to run a big time program… he is a big time coach. Not remotely comparable to Archie.

If the best that IU basketball can do is Ben McCollum, it’s a depressing as hell signal that IU basketball is a middle of the road basketball program so far removed from “blueblood” status. Maybe McCollum is the boy wonder that many on here have convinced themselves of, but IU basketball shouldn’t have to take that chance. How does the program go from allegedly offering Brad Stevens $10+ million a year to McCollum being the next option?

I think we are about the same age, roughly… IUBB is not the Yankees anymore. We are a shell of the program we used to be. We are hardly a “blue blood” anymore if at all. Not gonna pull coaches from the Celtics or Bulls. Not even Baylor or Iowa State. Bob Knight came from Army. We’re too good for a coach from Drake? His reputation precedes himself in basketball communities, it’s not just this board convincing themselves he’s a “prodigy.” He’s probably as good as we can reasonably hope for IMO unless you prefer a Brownell kind of guy.

IU is much closer to the program that has to settle for someone like Ben McCollum than it is hiring someone like Brad Stevens. Been that way 20+ years.

Also, it's a lot easier to throw out egregious numbers like $10mil/yr or $120 million over 10 years when there's zero chance that candidate is interested in the job. That is smoke from IU trying to entice legitimate candidates like Otzelberger or Drew that they're serious about the hire.

Again it depends on your definition of “better.” Is Collins or Brownell “better” because they’ve been mediocre to bad at the P5 level? I don’t doubt we could have either of them tomorrow. Beard isn’t coming. Stevens, Pearl, Drew, TJO et. al. Have never probably  been more than pipe dreams. Mark Pope was like the fifth guy on the UK list. I don’t even know about Kelsey, and both of those schools have won a natty this millennium. Our NIL is attractive, but the fact is coaches jumping P5 jobs is rare now. That’s just the reality of the market, it isn’t unique to IU.
