I think so as they are making a ton of money for their craft and I can’t even imagine some of the “3-4 schools in 4 years” guys being in classrooms. Wouldn’t surprise me if some of the schools have a number of players with a very heavy dose of online classes. When is the last time we heard of a player being academically ineligible during the season?
Who can blame the players. They are expected to play on multiple week-nights, go on cross country trips and work well over 40 hours a week.

I was thinking about this the other day. This is never an issue anymore. And I don't think kids have gotten "smarter".

You could say the same thing about most NBA players.  Put together a league with 200 non-superstar (but still making 5-10mm) NBA guys, without their Celtic/Laker uniforms, and I’m guessing there would be very little fan interest.

they're considerably better at their craft, regardless, so I don't agree.

Dug McDaniel got suspended at UM I think two seasons ago for six games only at home for academic reasons IIRC. He had a hall of fame tweet afterwards about how his …”teammates”… would hold it down while he’s out. Lol

Fine. Agree to disagree.

Yes, the NBA benchwarmers are considerably better (not even close) than college kids but they are just as dependent on their “brand” (being a Laker/Pacer/Celtic) as are the college players (IU/UK etc).

I view it similar to the minor leagues in baseball.  Obviously, there are differences, but it’s still paid sports entertainment.

UM really seems to be an outlier (which might end up frustrating Dusty).

They suspended McDaniel and they have also denied transfers (such as Caleb Love), that are able to find another school in 10 seconds, for academics..

I'd pay them about what the minor players get paid. Ultimately, that's where I'm going with this.

Cooper Flagg isn't worth 4.8 million to Duke lol .... he's worth that to the NCAA as a whole, to ESPN, sure.... to Duke? Nahhh.

Ballo wasn't worth 1.5 million we gave him. Really he wasn't worth close to that.

Your avatar makes it much more challenging  to disagree with you :)

I’m not disagreeing with you, but to some institution/ad/gm/coach…or the market, says otherwise.

These players are worth whatever the market dictates…whatever teams are willing to pay.
If you asked Duke admin, Flagg specifically is worth probably 10million+ based upon all he brings to the team on/off the court.

The NCAA and schools have profited for decades on high interest in college sports that’s fueled by strong regional tribalism and partly by the kids being less-talented than professionals. That difference in quality of play and its unpredictability makes the sport great for a lot of people. I’d never cite the lower quality as a reason they shouldn’t be making this kind of money.

I disagree because the name in the front of the jersey is what sells in college sports. It doesn't matter who is on the team as long as they are winning for fan bases to buy the product or go to games.

What % of Duke “people”, including those that put up the money, would you suggest regret paying him that much or if given the chance to do it over would say they wouldn’t do it again?  There will be some since they didn’t win a championship, but I’d bet it’s a low number.  If they say he was worth it, then he was….

You’re supporting my point. The interest in the name on the front is so strong, and so lucrative, that the NIL numbers we’ve been seeing these last few years don’t surprise me.

No. HE did NOT bring 4.8 million in revenue to Duke. Again, HE didn't. So no, couldn't have been worth it.... and hell... that's just to break even.

I think I responded to the wrong post on this one.
