If he would end up being successful enough to be considered for the Michigan job at that point I’m guessing we would all be a lot happier than we are now

I agree. If we're in a position where our coach is leaving for a Top 10, arguably Top 5 job, he left it in a WAY better place than he found it. I understand ideally finding a long-term guy, but we don't have the luxury of turning that sort of thing down

The only silver-lining in hiring Mike Hart may be just for that reason; an audition for the Michigan job. Extra motivation to succeed to keep the hope alive that he one day he is considered. Sorry just trying to rationalize why Mike Hart makes any sort of sense at the moment.

For what it's worth....the Michigan fans are all very disappointed in losing Hart, that is, if IU hires him.....

That would kinda be IU football, wouldn't it.  :)

Anyway, he didn't really say that.  He said it would be "ideal" to trot the new coach out to the fanbase at the basketball game.  I'm not sure why that would even matter.

Apparently, it's the thing to do. MSU did it the other night, during their bball game.

I will say that I think Matt knows a lot more than he shares with the board. What he shares with the board is usually a day behind when he has gotten the info if that makes sense.

He is very plugged in. There isn't much going on in there that he doesn't know about.

You do realize most of the other programs (men and women), under his watch, are pretty damn successful.

That's fine. That's not what I'm talking about either. He didn't hire Moren, didn't hire Yeagley, didn't hire Mercer, etc

I'm specifically looking at handing out one of the worst college football contracts in the history of the sport and the search efforts that landed a 63 year old NBA journeyman with no prior college experience who wasn't in any kind of demand. This on top of a new football search that on the surface seems extremely underwhelming.

Like I said the other night, when your greatest achievement as AD is firing a coach (that you didn't hire) who didn't play in a single tournament game in 4 years at Indiana University, your efforts deserve criticism.

I'd say the same about Frye. This isn't a learn on the fly job.

If I helped get him out of that Allen contract then he turned around and hired someone that had never even been a coordinator I'd want him to update his resume.

Except for the fact that Frye has been an OC at UCLA and is the associate head coach at OSU

Frye was OC in name only at UCLA. Chip Kelly to this day still calls his own plays, as does Ryan Day at Ohio State. Mike Hart was the associate head coach at Indiana before being hired away to Michigan FWIW.

LOL

So, you're saying he's done a good job with everything, but the football program?

You do realize IU football has been bad for over a century, correct?

Ryan Day, Ohio State: $10,196,250  ($9,826,500)
    OC Brian Hartline $1.6 million
    DC Jim Knowles $1.957 million.
    DL Larry Johnson $1.167 million
    OL Justin Frye $1 million
    CB Tim Walton $1 million
    RB Tony Alford $772,500
    S  Perry Eliano $515,000
    ST Parker Fleming $500,000
    TE Keenan Bailey $400,000
    QB Corey Dennis $412,000

Whoever gets hired will bring in his guys. Dolson isn't interviewing coordinator jobs. This is one of the major reasons I hope Candle is our guy. He'll bring in his guys, that already know the system (OF WINNING!). He'll hit the ground in a full blown sprint and shake some trees along the way. This is THE REASON I want an experienced HC that has a resume of winning to get hired. Even if it doesn't work out he'll at least already have a head start on things that most don't really take into account. If it's Chryst, he'll do the same. Hart and Frye will reach out to folks they trust and cherry pick folks to come along for the ride. They won't have that experience and hindsight of the duties of the job, but will be able to surround themselves with folks they trust. Regardless, going either route might be a homerun or a backwards K.

All of this makes me wonder that Dolson wasn't able to sell IUFB to some of the names mentioned. It's a tough sell, especially to winners. They probably asked tough questions to Dolson where he failed the smell test. If that's the case, I'm almost certain money played a big role. Which doesn't make sense considering we just ponied up a large chunk of change to axe Allen. Whatever, it's IUFB. The other thought I have is Dolson had a target or two but didn't get any bites because it's IUFB. For example, it's possible Herman just doesn't want to coach here but was kind enough to go through the interview process.

Bottom line, I hope the next coach hired wants to be here and has something to prove.

almost 20 million in staff is crazy to see.  goodness
