Made it to at least the sweet 16 in 3 out of the last 4 years. They run some beautiful stuff. I think i prefer him over Cronin.  The only negatives are he did fail at Iowa State and he is 60 (which surprised me when I looked it up). 

I think we could see a higher ceiling with McDermott than Cronin, but possibly a lower (but not by much) floor.

I can't help but feel like IU bball program is at a point where they need to hit a grand slam with this hire. I feel like they need it all this time around. Sexy name. Winner on and off the court etc. They need it ALL. This program needs a major injection of life into it!  A guy that wins at a decent clip but lacks other things just isn't gonna cut it. Scott, we need u to pull this one off buddy!!!

And on todays episode of As the World Turns, the rollercoaster of emotion continues as the IU fan base continues to react to the rumors, hints, and falsehoods of who maybe the next HC of their beloved basketball program. Stay tuned as the national pundits begin to inject their opinions on who would be a great replacement just like they did in the past 2 coaching searches even though they are out in left field and like to report on what they heard at the local B-dubs! And don't forget to tune in next week as the half retired, current coach tries to throw in another wrench to the fan bases' plans!

IU has needed that since RMK.  Sampson sure can coach and would have been great provided however he could not stop doing things that were impermissible.  And IU's oversite was belated at best, non-existent at worst.  And then we self reported which most colleges do not do.  It was totally out of control.

Hurley, Oats, Painter are the top 3 coaches in the game right now.

May is solid. He fits in the next tier. I’d be happy with him. I think he’s the most realistic target. But the timing is gonna be awkward.

Cronin. Man, idk. Realistic. But is this what we want when we can pick our style and branding?

McCasland-could be an Oats like guy with top NIL. Maybe, maybe not.

McDermott-I don’t hate it. Solid coach. It’s ok. Similar to May for me.

DaVries- similar to McDermott, May but a peg below.

Wade-he’s good, he’d win with Nil but he’s awfully Slimey.

Beard-I think he would have us top 10, but the fan blowback, etc just not gonna cut it.

The timing thing is gonna be tricky with anyone not named Stevens or Donovan. Are there any other NBA ties that would be candidates.

A day later, I firmly think it’ll be May. But if they make a deep run (or anyone we are after) we are screwed.

I'm not sure how important that is, but it isn't nothing.

He doesn't win the press conference but could be guy who just wins. I don't know about hanging banner 6, but we'd hang a few Big 10 banners and rarely miss a tournament. We'd be more Underwood's Illinois and Painter's Purdue than Indiana from the 70s and 80s.

McCasland is my favorite of the “field.” The guy can flat out coach. Won at every stop and winning now. He is Cignetti with (limited) P4 experience. .750 coach.
 

Just wonder if he’d be waiting for Texas or his alma mater (Baylor) to open.

Completely agree. He's way up there for me. 2nd on my list to Stevens, who I don't think we'll get. In addition to his winning percentage, he's also won tournaments and lower level championships. The guy just wins.

If IU is serious, they should be looking at $7M+ to pull a great coach away from a school they may love. Not offer Stevens $10M then settle for someone for $3-4M.

Examples: Double the salary of someone you really want like McCasland or Otzelberger. Offer Oats that $10M.

Edit: McCasland is making only $2.9M this year. I bet he'd go to IU for  $6-7M.
