I'll put it another way. With everything that's being said about him having alcohol issues, I was expecting it to be a video of him screaming at a grown man with his daughter in a bar lol this couldn't have been more opposite from that

In terms of a basketball coach, though, you have to care about the donor block in this day and age.  And Beard likely would have to win with less talent than another hire when some big donors withhold money.

Side by side comparison of 2 similar (resume wise) candidates. Just not sure what the best criteria to use are. Anyhow here are some of my combos and feel free to add on.

I've been fairly opposed to hiring Chris Beard for a while, but reading some of these posts this morning is pushing me quickly into the camp of hoping he's a candidate. 

I could not care less what a bunch of college professors think. 

I hope it's Brad though. He's the only one who can truly unite the fan base, and I do want us all excited about the hire and optimistic about our future.

Chris Beard is nothing more than an "In Case of Emergency Break Glass" candidate. 

 

That emergency would mean being rejected by at least 5-7 candidates, IU knowingly upsetting some big money donors, and facing immediate PR issues and a potential future PR nightmare.

 

In short...not happening.

She's had a ton of criticism from the staff/profs - not one of my buddies want her to stick around and some of those are pretty darn conservative (for Bloomington).

She's a Quinn buddy - part of the reason we did not get Dusty May is because she strongly backed QB on keeping Woodson - remember that and how pissed off we all rightly were/are?  

Call my buddies soy boys or whatever (funny cause 1 of them trains UFC guys in BJJ - I wouldn't call him that) but it's a fact that they are looking for anything and everything to get her out of office - see plagiarism stories that just don't die if you want an example. Whitten is a political animal - she's not stupid - honestly I'll be surprised if this isn't shut down immediately at the first sign of blow back.  

(Don't shoot the messenger but as someone who went to IU and has lived in Bloomington for 30+ years (still does) - this town is about to explode politically - whether you agree with the reasons or not the climate is not good for a controversial hire)

Interesting to see who people would pick amongst each duo. Without putting much thought to it and really off the top of my head, I would go:

Stevens

Few (Drew has the title and Indiana ties, Few has the longer history of consistent top teams but is older)

McCollum (tough one, I like Schertz too)

Turgeon :)

Devries 

Collins (tough one)

Otzelberger

Allow me to summarize the context of the problem with Beard:

• There is a video and a ton of stories out there about how he is a heavy, heavy drinker.
• The DV incident happened when he was drunk. Fair to say that incident is probably not the only time he has had a problem in his life because he drinks too much.
• There is no basis to believe he has stopped drinking - just the opposite.

Excellent basketball coach and maybe he can prove that he has successfully received treatment. If so? That is how I could see him getting a long look. But Kevin Wilson is surely in the minds of IU decision makers. 

And there are other options of fantastic coaches that don't have that potential key flaw.

Only Beard and his then fiancée know what happened that night. Was it a one time thing? Was this something he’s done before? Is he the stereotypical 1950s partner who slaps his partner around when his dinner is a few minutes late? We don’t know. Sometimes relationships are toxic and people do regrettable, uncharacteristic things in them. I think I read on here that his partner also had a past history of DV, but I could be mistaken. It’s not hard to imagine a set of circumstances that would lead to a drunken fight between partners. It doesn’t excuse his actions.  We have free will. He could’ve chosen to remove himself from the situation. He didn’t, and he’s faced the consequences for that decision. The backstory doesn’t matter to some and I understand that, but I do think it’s important when you’re assessing the likelihood of it happening again. 

And if people think it’s disqualifying on its own and it doesn’t matter whether he’s likely to do it again, I have no problem with that view. I’m not clamoring for Beard as the #1 option. If we can hire someone as good or better, awesome! I’ll just be highly frustrated if Dolson passes on Beard to hire a Brownell.

Stevens - he’s the white whale for a reason. Left and continued to be wildly successful while Donovan has been a mediocre NBA coach in his recent stop and is probably looking for an out.

Drew - younger, coming home, guards guards guards. Few is old and doesn’t want to leave the PNW.

McCollum but would probably be the same high ceiling low floor risk either way.

Otzelberger - would be my hope for the future 15-20 year lifer option. I hope we throw a massive bag at him if we don’t get Stevens or Drew.
