This is football related but is super relevant to our current position in the portal and spending on impact players for these last two spots. I do believe we got the starters right, but this is why we are going to have to go diamond in the rough hunting for these last 2-3 spots.

Purely FWIW because it’s Goodman, but he just said on F68 live show that he expects Indiana to end up in the top 5 budgets this year along with Louisville. He has historically had some pretty good insight in portal related stuff due to his connections with agents. That would be a welcome surprise.

I think MSU targeting Thiam is very telling. I agree with whoever posted earlier, even if they can play 4 and 5, I doubt those two would want to occupy the same space. Additionally, Fears and Carr are presumably making All-Big 10 caliber money, an Thiam and Sherrel are both widely assumed to be over the 4m mark. That would give you 4 players probably pushing 12m. Maybe they can do that but seems like a lot.

They will be better as portal prospects is what I meant. Not that they will pan out to be as good as him, but hopefully that too! Lol

Also, as happened last year, the first wave of great players is not always the best group in the portal. I think we’re seeing across the board that there are far less early commits and still high quality guys jumping in today. Michigan getting Estrella will no doubt work out well for them, but he may end up halfway down the list of “good bigs” when the portal entry stage is over.

The optimism will rise dramatically if we start portal with Sherrell, Burton, Mustaf. Sherrell or Burton would’ve been our best transfer last year and Mustaf and Olsen are very serviceable players. The narrative would change immediately which then leads to a position of power filling out the roster.

I think about this too, and I hope deep in my core that there is a list of guys they would make the exception for. Maybe Estrella just wasn’t high enough on their list? If someone like Sherrill or Burton says he wants an extra 1m and we balk at that, then I’d be really worried.

Genuine question, if the reports leaked around the first day or two that we had locked up Orme as our first get instead of Olsen, do we think the reception around here would be much more positive and hopeful? Seems like the project similarly but we are dooming because he’s our only guy. It’s day 2 of portal and hardly anyone has guys committed yet. I’m choosing patience. We’ll get guys. Our two most heralded newcomers last year were Mid Major POYs in Devries and Wilkerson. I am hopeful that no matter what, our best two transfers will be higher regarded than those two.

Is Estrella a four or a five? Would he need a big bodied presence to play alongside or would he essentially function as a primary big?

Yeah if you have gripes with this hypothetical list idk what to tell anyone. Obviously this is a big wishlist but it satisfies everyone’s concerns about the mid majors and the productivity over potential that’s 4/5 high major P4 guys, all with significantly proven production. We won’t start him, but even if you plug Sisley in at the four as your high energy rebound and defend guy, that starting five looks a ton better than this years. To that point, if Devries doesn’t perform with that much production and better roster construction in year 2 the writing will be on the wall.

I think you have to be at least a bit optimistic if your hyper-super-ultra-early projecting/forecasting is: PG: M. Burton (P4 with production) SG: ??? SF: J. Haralson (P4 with production) PF: ??? C: S. Fru (P4, at least some production) Bench: Sisley, Prince-Alexander, Karvala At minimum, that is a significant upgrade from where we were building from last year

I think the idea would be that if you can turn every QB you touch into a high level star, that reputation might make you desirable to talent that isn’t afraid of competition and thinks they can win the job. If you turn three or four transfer QBs into draft picks and heisman candidates I would imagine top HS quarterbacks would start to take notice.

I think/hope we are going to become a destination for top 5ish transfer QBs every year. We’ve now absolutely nailed both Rourke and Mendoza. I think we can plan to see 1-2 developmental QBs in the room and a big swing every offseason for a high level quarterback with a lot of starts elsewhere under their belt.

We are a team that is going to need 2/3 of energy, execution, and 3pt shooting every single night if we are going to win games against teams with talent. We have now seen two straight where we lack all three against bums and got tested into the second half. I am trying not to be too pessimistic this early in the season but this effort against a bottom half Big Ten team is going to be a loss every single time.

Atrocious energy and effort man. If we aren’t absolutely stroking it from three we are going to have a lot of games where we get ran out of the gym, I fear.

Conerway walking the ball up the court so we start halfcourt offense with 20 seconds on the clock every time is going to drive me INSANE

I think we’re gonna come out swinging after last game. My rose colored glasses take is that the guys needed one like last game to bring them back to earth and also to learn how to play when the three isn’t falling. Give me a 30 point win

Well, at least I can stop refreshing the threads so much now that Thompson, Allmond, and Taylor are off the board. Bring me Karvala for a bargain this fall and let’s go beat some people on the court so the portal/spring recruiting are much easier to sell.

I went looking for an OSU board to see how they were feeling about him since we hadn’t had any updates for a few days and genuinely couldn’t find anything. May not have looked hard enough or this is just how us football powerhouses behave ;)
