I dont know what everyone is so upset about in this thread. Portal season is the 2nd most exciting time to be an IU basketball fan. Only behind coaching search season, which only happens once every 4 years. Enjoy this time everybody.

I'm a little surprised that we haven't heard of any IU players hitting the portal yet.

It's not inevitable by any means. Last year's class was ranked #10 by 247 for example. Of course, it had the benefit of being a 12 man transfer class. Now we are fully staffed and need fewer players. Hopefully we only sign 6 or 7 players who are more talented in the portal this time around.

First presser in a long time. Spring practice has kicked off. This is funny (per Osterman): "Cignetti asked about Nick Marsh. Says he loved his film last year vs. Maryland. "I didn't love those gold shoes he came out in today. He learned what getting your @$$ ripped is all about. I don't know if he got much of that at Michigan State." This draws laughs.

I really, really do not care what our transfer class is ranked, and that goes both ways: If we get a highly ranked class like the last two years and they perform badly ... like the last two years? That's more sadness. If we get a lower ranked class yet it kicks butt? Hooray and finally! So no spin from me - looking for potential, for high-character kids, and for a range of necessary skills from whoever we get. Don't care if they are from major, mid, or small conferences. The proof of whether the evaluations were on point will be revealed next fall.

Also looking forward to assessing what a 2nd year DeVries does in-game without his limited, but skilled son but also with hopefully more high-major players this year.

Ok, now we’re talkin’. Big fan of Thomas. Lefty. Really clever. Can get in the lane on anyone. Can get a look whenever he wants one. Good enough shooter. Very good passer. Defends. Tough. Watched him when he was at UNLV play New Mexico 1 night and he gave Donovan Dent all he wanted. They’re actually very similar players. Got hurt last year at LSU and missed a bunch of time, so might even be a bit of a value proposition. Pretty sure my personal PG1 just hit the board.

Love it. I’d say at a minimum he finds a good consistent spot in the rotation next year and starts his jr and sr year. We need those guys in our program.

Dedan Thomas, LSU. 6'1" point guard. 15.3 ppg, 2.7 RPG, 6.5 apg, 4 to 1 assist to turnover ratio. Interesting that he hit the portal at the same time that rumors about Will Wade going back to LSU have hit. 247 rates him as the fourth best player (and second best point guard) that has announced to hit the portal so far.

That is fantastic news. Trent Sisley is pretty much a canary in the coalmine as to whether team culture and staff development was up to par or dysfunctional last season. My other hopeful tell? On senior night, every departing player, even Conerway, gave a hug to and posed for family pictures with Devries. Never saw that with Archie - methinks most players kinda hated lil' Arch.

I don't disagree with our friend DD. But at least Wade spent a year at N.C. State. DD spent one week at West Virginia before bailing. LOL.

He filled an open assistant spot that was left unfilled last year. You can have 5 assistants now instead of the old way with 3. IU only had 4 assistants last year. As long as they are ncaa certified any of the 5 can be used during evaluations but only 3 coaches other the then the head coach can be on the road at a time during the evaluation periods

Kind of depends what one considers to be spin. If they sign a class ranked 20th but the pieces look like a team and fill rolls and the vision is clear and the staff seems pleased I’m gonna be perfectly fine with it and willing to assume the best and judge the actual game results even if I preferred some different kids and that’s what I’ll say. Am I spinning? I don’t think I am. Now if they sign a 6 man class of 6 centers that would rate a side eye, but even then I’m down with judging the end result because it’s DDV’s vision at play, not mine. So, yeah, I’m probably only gonna get so critical unless I see an utterly incoherent process, which would shock me.

I would have to do more than just touch some grass to think a below average bench player from Northwestern is going to add anything of value to IU's team. He scored 20 points twice as a freshman. He was five times more likely to score no points, which he did ten times his freshman year. Seriously, I can't think of any player IU has gotten through the portal in the NIL era that would bring as little to the table as the player you are suggesting. He's is almost certainly going to be a 'down transfer' -- transferring from the Big Ten to a mid to low major.

Tbf, our fanbase has spent 25 years watching Davis/Crean/Archie/Woody try to coach. That’s like going to the hibachi place and getting Michael J Fox as your chef. You can’t blame ‘em for thinking “hey, I could do better than that!”

Also-- career starts OL Lynch- 29 Smith- 42 Evans- 21 Brunner- 24 (at least) That's going to pay dividends... pray for health.

Kind of to Five Prime’s point, none of us know anything about Ryan Carr and we’ve pretty much already turned him into a modern day Red Auerbach. I’m bullish on the hire too, don’t get me wrong. But taking people, players, and coaches that we know little about and building them up once they sign with IU is kind of what we do as fans.

Yep - nobody being replaced with this hire. Now, doesn’t mean that an assistant won’t leave - just wouldn’t be connected to this hire.

Former Ben Davis CG KJ Windham in the portal after 2 years at NW . Watched the kid a ton in HS a very high ceiling. Tough hard nosed MIC guard. IU desperately needs a kid like this off the bench .
