  1. I was thinking about this in another thread and don’t think I posted anything. But… Theres a good chance the 1/4 century of crap the basketball program produced didn’t sink the program because there was nothing to take its place. Now with IU football’s ridiculous success, I think basketball can almost be killed off for good absent some real success. The monied alumni seem to already have made that decision. The common fan will follow. There’s a time I wouldn’t have missed this game. I honestly almost forgot it was on. But I made time to watch our football opponent last night. Had Cig came ten years ago basketball would be an afterthought.

  2. After the OSU game, I fear no one. We have a complete team and they will compete with anyone until the very end.

  3. You guys with the apathy thing just crack me up. IU was the losingest team in college football. The worst. To say there was no excitement about IU football would be an understatement. 2 years later with real success there’s great excitement. There was excitement during the Crean years in bball when we were winning B1G championships and making SW 16 runs despite mediocre coaching. The attendance numbers for IU basketball even during the horrible Woodson years were top 10. Apathy? Here, sure, and students don’t care about the weak team we just played, but as IU ball gets its feet under itself going forward (it will, whether this season or next) the enthusiasm level will grow. You’d think you guys live in the age of immediate gratification and social media. Oh wait

  4. Only my opinion but I wouldn’t see a reason to panic until they start losing home games to teams they will be fighting for a tourney spot with. Before the season the national college basketball media and most on here felt making the tourney would be a good first year for DeVries. Listen to the national media yesterday nothing has changed most feel IU is flawed team but still will be in that second tier of B1G teams that will be fighting each other for a tourney spot. I didn’t watch the game but if I only went by what happen in this place I would have thought they lost the game. Watching the highlights on the different stations however they actually pointed out IU taking care of business and doing what was necessary getting through the last game before break. Unless you thought they were going to be the cream of the crop of the B1G in his first year then I guess you can panic because they won’t be close to the top teams in the league. They will have a tough time with the Purdues, Michigans and Michigan States of the world this year however that leaves 14 other teams they will competing with for a tourney spot and my opinion only they will have chances against all the remaining B1G teams. They are not going to win all those games however from watching those other teams play they are far from dominating teams where IU wouldn’t have a chance. They will either win enough to be a tourney team or they won’t

  5. Indiana doesn't start 3 freshmen on their offensive line like Oklahoma does. Alabama didn't tackle well and offensively they can't run it. Indiana will wear them down over 4 quarters. I even think we'll scheme and be okay defensively because (and I LOVE Stephen Daley) we're faster on defense now. Indiana's a better team than Alabama and wins a clean game.

  7. Kadlecova's leaving was disappointing at best. Totally unexpected, at least by me. She seemed happy after games. And I think Maya is going just fine. She's a freshman for crying out loud.

  11. Don’t attendance numbers count tickets sold rather than butts in seats? IU basketball will always sell tickets, and I don’t think the university really cares much if people actually show up for games, but the balcony especially has been a graveyard all season. Patience is harder to preach in the NIL era, particularly to the same fanbase that watched a coach immediately turn around the worst P5 football program in the country. It’s not Devries’ fault, but Crean’s last sweet 16 team was a decade ago. Happy moments have been few and far between since then. Fan appetite for yet another rebuild is virtually nonexistent. Certainly Assembly Hall will be packed if the basketball team gets things rolling again, but until then I expect more of the same mediocre Assembly Hall we’ve seen recently.

I agree with the caveat that I think the field’s already too big. Personally, I think it should be 4 and that should be the end of it. If someone wants 6 with 2 byes, fine. If they insist on 8, ok, I guess. But 12 is too many. If the field is big enough that a 3 loss team is under serious consideration under any circumstances at all then the field’s already too big. This idea of going to 16 with all these auto bids like the B1G is proposing is ridiculous. And if some non-P4 can get in based on resume/eye test, cool, love it. But an auto bid is stupid. There’s no FDU-Purdue scenario in football. JMU and Tulane could have played those games 100 times and they would have lost them all.

  13. If basketball was ranked between 10 and 20 right now, we're not having this conversation.
    3 points
  14. No one is apathetic about IU football. People are apathetic about IU basketball because they're tired of unranked, nondescript IU teams with obvious limitations that aren't relevant to anyone outside of Indiana, year after year, way more often than not for the past 25-30 years.

  15. As it stands, IU is #29 in the NET rankings. Torvik has IU as the #20 team in the country, with a 94% chance to make the tournament. Averaging a 6 or 7 seed. I am not as high on our ceiling as T-Rank, just offering a data-based counter to the doom and glooming here.

  16. I was at the game. First half we dominated and made a bunch of open threes. Second half we mostly missed those same open shots. Also missed a bunch of FTs. Crowd was pretty weak, as expected for a Christmas break game against a bottom feeder. Not much to take away from this kind of game positive or negative, but those with agendas already decided will see what they want to see. Completely agree with the bulk of your post. I am much more optimistic about this team going into January than either of the last two seasons.

  17. It's sad to me that Indiana has become a team and program which relies exclusively on shooting well from deep to give itself a chance to win against decent teams. We are going to get absolutely destroyed in the Big Ten. DeVries right now, with this team is in way over his head, and i am sorry to say that. We just got out-scored in the second half....at home...by Chicago State. By 2-10 Chicago State. I thought we got out-hustled. I thought our shot selection was bad and our kids looked more interested in setting a 3 point record than playing good basketball. DeVries did have a chance to really fire up his fan base, but playing this style and consistently playing down to competition and getting out-hustled is not the way to do it. Indiana basketball's brand is "too big to fail." In 2024 it was STILL the 3rd highest grossing program in NCAA D1 basketball, believe it or not. Indiana needs the right coach....and one or two terrific recruiting classes/portal classes and we'll be just fine. I give DeVries a one season pass, but a good coach can get a fat kid in flip flops to play hard, and Indiana just doesn't. They're so frequently lazy, slow, weak, and deliberate or they're quick and selfish. GOD how I want to root for this team and this program, but too many years of tolerating bullsh*t from Davis, Sampson, Crean (about half the time), Archie, and my goodness how pathetically bad was Woodson....have really flattened our fan base and it's obvious.

  18. Apathy continues to set in. The chance to rejuvenate the fanbase came and went, time and time again. Sad to see what it’s become. DeVries gets a real chance to rebuild this with expectations at a bare minimum. But he needs to build some momentum very soon because the money, fanbase, and stage have been the only selling points for the program for quite some time. Continue to lose selling points as Assembly Hall has been embarrassing this season.

  20. This is completely uncalled for, and inaccurate. Not sure what your vendetta is against this young lady, but it seems a little personal. HSE's schedule says either you don't follow basketball, or you're intentionally misleading people.

  21. Franchises change. Including owners and senior executives. Need some evidence? The Jaguars, Panthers, Texans and probably Lions are playoff teams this year. Go back just a couple of years and those were looked at at the worst franchises in the NFL, not just on the field, but in management. Now I understand that the Jets and Cleveland are kind of a special level of mismanagement, but the Lions used to be thought of as the worst case example, and so the Jets can change too.

  22. Giants and Raiders play next week. If the Raiders lose that game they’ll be in the driver’s seat for the 1st pick. Not only is that a bajillion times better than going to the Jets, having a direct line to Tom Brady is a pretty legit resource for a young QB.

  24. My opinion the fact that 2 of the losses are to Kentucky and Louisville combined with the fact that May has Michigan the number 1 team in the NET makes the optics worse and people want this flipped yesterday. Doesn’t work that way most of the time. Sometimes you got to grind to get where you want.

  25. I couldn't disagree more. The basketball apathy is due to performance of the basketball team, not because of the success of the football team.

  26. I’ve got say it is a little annoying when they talk great defenses and they bring up OU, TTU, and OSU. Even Miami now. We were #2 in SP+ on D. Held Oregon’s offense at their place to 13 points and OSU to 10 on a neutral. I know we had an injury but we’re still darn good. Is what it is. Probably just down the our name and lack of recognizable high end recruits. Add it to the bulletin board. As usual it will be on us to prove it on the field.

  28. It's a slow Sunday and I like thinking about what Memorial Stadium could be, so below are some more random thoughts. I'm just shooting the sh1t, not trying to argue. A) This stupidly nitpicky on my part, but I think this change is doable. Agree it's tight and the doors are there, I'd just add rows of bleachers down to about door level. It fits more people than the bar seating and gets our fans closer to the field. But, I 100% know this doesn't make a big difference either way and it probably won't happen, it just annoys me. At the least, add the bar seats to the East side so I don't have to see those green mats. C) Yes -- ribbon boards everywhere please! When our older fans complain it looks like a nightclub that will be a sign we have enough flashing ribbon boards and LED screens. Yes, seems so. I get what you're saying, games at Lucas Oil would be convenient for some (including me), but I'd hope that we can do the renovation in stages and keep games on campus. It would good for the students, Bloomington biz, and I like the gameday experience in the most lovely small town in the land. If PSU can redo their whole stadium without moving, I'd hope we can do the West side without moving. Though KU just spent a season at Arrowhead during their renovation/rebuild, so there is precedent of playing a season in an NFL stadium. The big question will probably be if the core infrastructure of the West stand can be worked with or does it need total replacing (as in knocking down the whole thing)? These stands can last a long time, I'm looking at OSU and ND who have built up over their old stands. But I don't know. It sounds like the West side is the focus, I don't know if this is true but some have said East side press box/suites would have the sun in people's eyes. Not sure if that's a real issue, I guess it is I just haven't noticed it when I sit over there. A West stand renovation with suites/press box/premie seats will likely reduce capacity of that side. Adding some rows to the East side will give us that capacity back and some nice balance, and of course we've got to get more seats in the SEZ which as we've all seen has tons of space. Last thought -- I hope Scott and IU keep atmosphere in mind too in addition to all the amenities stuff. Keeping our steep stands and getting fans close to the field helps. As does a better PA system and all the ribbon/LED stuff, there is nothing wrong with manufacturing some atmosphere, most schools do it.

  30. Apathy is the worst thing for a program, and that’s exactly where the basketball program is at this point. The Woodson hire showed IU wasn’t serious about basketball, and the Devries hire showed that no one was coming to save the program from itself. Maybe he’ll do well, maybe he won’t. So far his roster construction stinks, his high school recruiting is meh, and the team on the court is even more underwhelming. And honestly, oh well. He seems like a nice enough guy (and isn’t a raging a** like the last guy), so that’s an improvement. I’ve largely given up on IU basketball ever being anything more than a middling program. I like football a lot more than basketball as a sport anyway, so IU football’s success makes it so much easier to get over IU basketball’s mediocrity. You could throw more money at basketball to try to solve the problem, but that seems foolish to do when every dollar put toward basketball would be better off going to Cignetti. I don’t think we’ll see a pissed off IU basketball fan base like we saw with Woodson. Fans just won’t show up and we’ll keep seeing a quiet, half empty Assembly Hall. It stinks, but you can only keep enthusiasm for a dead program going for so long. Kind of ironic that IU football’s success dealt the final blow to the basketball program. Who woulda thought.

I’m alright with G6 bids (albeit, probably don’t need two if we’re sticking with 12 teams), but the G6 reps just happen to be pretty bad this year. My petty side thinks it’s hilarious that Notre Dame has to sit at home and watch this all by their own doing.

  37. An already shorthanded team will be even more so with the departure of Kadlecova back to her home overseas to play professionally. Nothing at all definitive, but doesn't sound like we see Z back on the court until some time in January. Wiseman missed the last 2 games in concussion protocol but likely available on Sunday if needed. Western Carolina (2-10) won its first 2 games and then lost its next 10. They average just 59 ppg with a -10 margin. They shoot 35% FG and 30% on 3s. They average 36 rpg with a -2 margin. 2 double digit scorers at 11.7 and 11.4 ppg. Several players average between 4 and 5 rpg. They average 20 TOs/gm. On paper, this should be an easy Hoosier win. Radio Live Stats
