I think that its standard in a contract to have a $10m buyout, but there should be a clause (and I posted something similar to this when Archie was hired) that if the coach misses the tournament the buyout drops if he misses 2 tournaments in a row, buyout drops further, etc. But if lets say in year 3 he goes to the FF, then buyout goes back to standard buyout on contract. You would think Glass would have learned his lessen from the Tom Crean buyout. 

 

This also makes me wonder, if Glass hadn't extended Crean in 2013, is Crean fired earlier? do we still get archie and have to fire him? or do we get Shaka or someone else? Either way, do we end up in the same place?

We are also highly aware of his highly successful resume of forfeiting final fours. To say that he does things above board would be a stretch.

All of the other top candidates were still coaching until this past weekend, so it would make perfect sense to get the interviews with the others out of the way while you wait for your top candidates to free up. Thank you, exactly this. You probably couldn’t interview any of the current HCs any earlier than maybe Beard sometime this week? So instead of sitting on your hands you talk to some other folks, even coaches you almost certainly wouldn’t hire at this point.

Matta makes sense as a high choice IF he’s healthy, as has been said pretty frequently. Not at all crazy. If he’s not, well.

Franklin and Stewart would be nice to keep, but they’re both going to hear out the new coach, whoever and whenever that happens.

My "educated" guess is we inquired about the opening.  Matta said he was intrigued but didn't feel like he could "physically" handle the demands of the job.  "Rumors" spread he failed a physical NOT that he politely turned us down due to fact he didn't feel like he could put 100+% into the position.

Interesting. If true, that would mean the IU Athletic Department's immediate squashing of that rumor was untruthful. 

I'm still skeptical, just because I don't even know what a failed physical would mean in this context. What would we be concerned about specifically that would physically prevent him from taking the job? It just doesn't pass the smell test to me, no offense intended Chris (I know you are just passing along what you heard, which I appreciate)!

Edit: I get that he has health issues that could prevent him from giving it his all, but it's not clear what a doctor would tell us in that regard that would cause us to discount Matta's own assessment of his condition.

Coaching is a stressful job. Look how much Archie age'd in four years. Although I'm happy for him for losing the weight and getting in shape this past season!

If Thad can't pass a simple physical then he has no business being our coach.

Parker and Aarman have not left yet. They entered the transfer portal to enable them to keep their options open... both have said that they aren't necessarily or definitely leaving... just that they want to look around and talk to other programs. If IU gets a solid coach, he can keep both... no need to panic yet... IU basketball is not (yet) circling the drain...

I'm not directing this at anyone - more of a generalization, but is it just me, or does the entire IU basketball fan base seem to be totally schizophrenic?
