John Groce, Akron Zips

John Groce has turned the Akron Zips into a powerhouse in the Mid-American Conference. The Zips have won two of the last three MAC tournaments and have gone 157-86 under Groce. Prior to coaching at Akron, he spent five years in the Big Ten with Illinois, where he went 95-75 and reached the NCAA Tournament once. He also won two MAC tournament titles as head coach of the Ohio Bobcats from 2008 to 2012. His tenure with the Bobcats was highlighted by a trip to the Sweet Sixteen in 2012. 

Groce’s ties to the state of Indiana could make him an enticing candidate. A native of Muncie, Indiana, he started his coaching career at Taylor University in the NAIA before serving as an assistant for the Butler Bulldogs.

Akron has the most money and best facilities in the MAC (I think LeBron is named/contributed to a practice facility).  Not a coincidence that they are at the top of the league.

Groce is a good coach, but he had his shot at Illinois.  No chance for a gig like IU.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in this fella. Last year he spread a lot of rumors regarding Woodson about things happening behind the scenes. He also made up rumors about Dolson backchanneling to try to hire Bruce Pearl. After he got exposed for his BS he made his account private for a while and when he came back all his tweets were deleted.

He left for the NFL, completely different. Auburn to Indiana today is a lateral move at best. His son getting the head coaching job is more than likely contingent on Pearl retiring at Auburn in a few years. Don't think there's anyway he screws that up for his son.

I don't think it's Woodson's decision to make...especially if resources have already been put into place to hire his replacement...
