General Coach Candidate News

What I worry about with McCollum is how quickly he could lose the fan base once the losing starts. Basically what happened with Archie imo.

I don't think Archie ever truly recovered after we got drilled at home by IPFW and Indiana State in in his first nonconference season.

Those losses were reality checks for a lot of fans, just seemed like any sort of expectations people had of him taking us where Crean couldn't instantly evaporated.

One or two of those type of losses, people will be thinking oh boy what did we do hiring a guy who just 2 years ago was coaching against schools like Rogers State, Ft Hays State, and Pittsburg State in DII.

Really good points. I will say the more I have chewed on it/watched Drake play, if we do end up having to take a swing, might as well swing for the fences. I would expect Dolson to surround him with the experience he would need to handle the infrastructure that comes along with a behemoth like IU. Archie soured everyone on mid major types so I get the hesitancy (I have it too), but this guy just flat wins. Ultimately in this era of roster building, and the immediate success we have witnessed at UM, UK and UL I think anyone who comes in will be expected to win pretty quick. Maybe not win huge, but the tournament with as weak as the bubbles are now should be a given playing as many Q1 games as we do in the B1G.

Tomorrow and Monday things will pick up. Goo Hoosiers

Doubt it... but what does "pick up" even mean?

I think tonight/tomorrow if we lose today….

So... we aren't hiring a current HC?

I'm betting it's another 8 days, at the earliest, before we know who's coaching us next season.

For anyone Pro - Devries who was mentioned as a potential dark horse candidate.

rumor mill is many within WVU are telling him to steer clear of IU his staff includes (Kory Barnett - Indiana native and long time Alford assistant) and (Tom Ostrom - former IU assistant under Archie Miller) . But also “higher up people within WVUs program.”

Lame , scared and insecure cool cross off the list wasn’t high up anyway and move on .

Regarding #4,  Eddies great and certainly recognizable, won’t argue his status in the top 5.

But these guys are just as recognizable off the top of my head.  That’s an easy 10:

Jerry Garcia

Stevie Ray Vaughn

Slowhand

Duane Allman

Trey Anastasio

Jimi Hendrix

Kirk Hammett

Angus Young

Billy Gibbons

David Gilmour

You left out: Jimmy Page, B B King and Carlos Santana

Interesting quote from Rabs: “It’s always possible, but Beard wasn’t a major player in Mullins’ recruitment, so that would be a surprise flip. If the new IU coach was Stevens or May, you’d be looking at very different odds.”

And we know that HC is still talking to Mullins family.

If mccollum is the next coach - which I’m pretty sure he won’t be - then any chance of this program being a top 20 or even top 25 destination is out the window. You don’t select someone hoping and convincing yourself they’re the next Bo Ryan - when there is at least an equal chance he’s a Licklighter or Archie - to operate a multi million dollar program with top of the line resources. He’s not the hire to make at this time.

Wonder what the UCONN and Alabama fans thought when they hired Hurley from Rhode Island and Oates from Buffalo. Do you think they thought they would win championships and make final fours when they got hired

RMK Army to IU

Coach K Army to Duke

Calhoun Northeastern to UCONN

Izzo Assistant to MSU

Boheim Assistant to Syracuse

Roy Williams Assistant to Kansas

Stevens Butler to the Celtics

I see most of the all time coaches went from mid major to the big time and succeeded

I'd expect a guy like McCollum to not bring the hubris we got with the current guy... make sure he's surrounded by what he needs to succeed... but for me McCollum is still probably fourth or fifth on my list behind BS, Drew, OTZ and maybe DeVries (with the same support team).

Bottom line: whoever it is, he has to win and win big and win consistently.
