General Coach Candidate News

People were confident on Stevens last time too, then he publicly stated he has no interest.

It's not happening. Even if the new owners wanted to go in a different direction another NBA franchise would scoop him up.

So someone stating they have no interest 4 years ago means they can't have interest now? Crazy world we live in. Either way respect for sharing!

Because there’s no reason to believe that he is an option. He’s turned the job down multiple times and then left coaching entirely.

This logic of he told us no 4 years ago so that no last for eternity is a wild concept to me. The answer very well may be no again, but IU better actually get a no again. To not ask and assume it’s a no because he said no last time in crazy. So much has changed in 4 years.

But he has said no, we just don't want to listen.  Seventy-two hours after "we got our guy" and "we got him" posts, we're seeing "60/40" posts from the same "insider."  This place is wild...

I recognize your name from the Rivals site.  BTB is a lot better than the Rivals board, which is a mix of (i) a bunch of old guys crying nonstop that we won’t hire Beard, (ii) no mods present allowing for endless fights between posters, (iii) PU trolls, and (iv) no interesting sources of info.

Not everything is true over here, but there are some good nuggets of info every once in a while.  And it’s generally entertaining and often funny, which is what message boards are really about… none of us is hiring the next coach.

IU will certainly ask him again. But there’s no reason to believe the answer will be any different this time beyond pure hope

But you’re right that so much has changed in 4 years. Stevens quit his coaching job to take a cushy front office job. He’s gonna jump back into coaching at one of the biggest pressure cookers in the country? Doubtful.

For those wondering if my report of a meeting at Zionsville airport between a Stevens representative and an IU representative is straight or snark...I tried to make myself sufficiently unclear.

It is not entirely non-fiction.  Love those double negatives.

(Spoiler alert...do not believe it entirely.)  But it could have happened that way.  Hope.

I'm going to say this. We're not going to be talking to a guy since late November about our job coming open. Discuss salary, give NIL assurances, make sure they feel comfortable coming here this time, and then the first weekend the job opens the person goes yeah NO Thanks.

Scott and his team, have put a lot of time in effort in this back-channeling to try to give us the best shot possible at landing him. He has listened, given us feedback, asked for certain things, and told us he's considering it.

We haven't even gotten to the formal part of the job interview yet and won't for some time. Not like Stevens needs to interview but we're not going to sit down with him for some time.

He might say no. All of you people who have said Stevens is 100% not coming to IU will be able to post I told you so. But to say we have no chance, you're flat-out wrong.

Nothing is happening with any candidate this month I can tell you that. So relax watch some games, go outside and get some air.

Mike Woodson is not the coach next season and an upgrade is on their way. Go Hoosiers!!

There is another element / added bonus for Stevens this time - college basketball has become drastically worse since this job was open four years ago. There are no great teams anymore. The only household coaching names left are Self and Calipari, and they’re both winding down. Despite winning two NCs, no one cares about Hurley.

CBB needs to be saved nationally, and Brad Stevens would bring immediate attention to the game again. That may increase the “pressure cooker” element of this job, but he would also garner immediate sports celebrity status on Day 1.

UM agreed to the buyout … Louisville did not.

I asked before but it got buried, what are people basing this on? I’ve seen nothing anywhere other than Louisville wanted him and he declined. Eye on CBB mentioned again yesterday that one of the reasons he didn’t take UL was the fish bowl aspect. They’ve mentioned it several times, never anything about a buyout demand. It’s also not really that low for a first time P4 coach. I’m not trying to antagonize, I’m genuinely curious how this narrative of Dusty wanting a low buyout started.

I seem to recall May coming within hours, maybe minutes of taking the Louisville job and then Michigan came in at the eleventh hour and kind of blew everything up. A lot of Louisville people thought May was accepting the job on the day he signed with Michigan.

Anybody know if May has hung any pictures at his place?

This is pure speculation but I'm wondering if Louisville wasn't willing to give Dusty the flexibility of the low buyout / "IU opt-out", and leveraged that with Michigan shortly before finalizing the deal with U of L

It's crazy how "the he's said no before, he's not coming"  crowd choose to ignore all that is known about process that occurred last time and all that has chaged.

Details were in place, it wasn't just a "you up?"

His agent /wife was misogynisticly insulted as the negotiations were ramping up

He was actively coaching the Celtics in season and the Celtics were in th process oftransitioning Danny Ainge out of the front office and they saw Stevens as their top choice.

He has now won an NBA championship with the Celtics.

He and Tracy had a HS freshman and beginning middle schooler that had never known anything other than Boston since being a toddler. One is now back in Indiana and the other will be a rising junior and much better mentally equipped to deal with a new location.

His family voted 3-1 to stay in Boston.

Now all of this doesn't mean he takes the job,but those flat out saying they know he won't are either trolling or just using a defense mechanism to avoid feeling jilted again.

The amount of highs and lows this thread will experience over the next 4 weeks will make the stock market blush.

Things will continue to get more visceral lol.

Bottom line is Scott Dolson is at the wheel.  He probably doesn’t even know exactly how this will go.  I am pretty calm because I trust his judgment and believe he will get us the best possible result in this search.  He has been prepping for this hire for years.

Possibly a key point in getting a new coach on board.

The NCAA Division I Council shortened this year’s portal window. It’s only 30 days this time around, and the window won’t open until after the first weekend of the NCAA tournament.
