Has there been a bigger fumble at this school? That whole 4 year Woodson debacle is going to piss me off for years. Particularly if May builds a dynasty in Ann Arbor. It is like the cherry on top of the sundae they started building with the way they handled the Knight firing. Every single decision made from that point through the Woodson term was just a huge comedy of errors. Like a textbook course on mismanagement and bureaucratic malfeasance. I wasn't born when Quin played and I was a toddler when Woodson played. They may be "greats" to the older old heads, but my view of them is two dudes who f***ed over Indiana University for their own personal enrichment.10 points -

I’d put him in the good to very good category. Excellent on ball, high IQ, and plays physical for his size, although his size is what I feel keeps him from being elite. But that’s picking nits. He’ll bring it on both ends8 points -

I said this after last weekend. But it pisses me off even more now. UConn has a shooting guard who should be shooting at IU. Michigan has a coach who should be coaching at IU. Thanks, Quinn and Woody.6 points -

Cig has the coaching chops and attention to the "standard" of Coach Knight without the fatal flaws. Best of both worlds. Can't stand Hurley or UCon so hope they lose in the most painful way possible.6 points

For YEARS I’ve been saying the “little things” around the program matter... uniforms, concessions, game presentation, how the building looks and feels. People laughed that stuff off as superficial and make fun of me on here.... Then Curt Cignetti shows up and proves the point in about five minutes. He walks in the door and immediately notices: the banners are dusty, the carpet is worn out, the office looks like trash. That’s not vanity; that’s standards. That’s a coach who understands that if the environment is sloppy, the product will be sloppy. From there, he gets involved in everything: DJ/music selection Rally towels in the stadium Concession upgrades Uniform details (Marsh’s gold cleats) Getting us a Mascot Game day experience Even “coaching” the fans – emailing students, pushing them to show up, stay, and be part of something bigger Nothing is beneath him, because everything adds up to a culture. When I went to the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, you could feel it. Everyone, and I mean everyone, could rattle off the identity of the program: “Fast, Physical, Relentless. Six seconds a play. Every play has a life of its own. Not impacted by the play before or after. Every play like it’s nothin nothin” The entire stadium of IU fans knew the language, the expectations, the direction. That’s culture. That’s clarity. That’s what a real program feels like. Now compare that to IU basketball post-Knight. The biggest problem isn’t just wins and losses; it’s that every coach since Knight has basically come in to “coach basketball” and nothing else. They don’t really coach the fans. They don’t shape the environment. They don’t demand standards in how the program looks, feels, and presents itself. It’s recruiting and X’s and O’s, and then hoping that’s enough. It’s not enough. Indiana doesn’t just need a good basketball tactician. We need someone who has actually turned a program around before, who understands that building a winner at IU means building a culture from the ground up... from the dust on the banners to the noise in the arena. We need a coach who treats everything as part of the job, not beneath the job.5 points

Immediately goes to #1 on my personal PG board. Loved him in HS. Has size. Good athlete. Tough and fearless. Defends. Really clever getting in the lane. Has vision. Love that he’s a lefty because righty’s always underplay a lefty’s strong hand, particularly in scramble or open court situations. The shooting needs to get better but I’m willing to bet on that. Go get Lewis and Hines and you’ve solved your 1 and 5 problems for the next couple of years.5 points -

Some of the most egregious and shameless cronyism possible in the world of college sports. That IU contract was ~$15-16M more than Woody could have made as an NBA coach flame out relegated to being an assistant. That was what it was really about. And I suspect that $15-16M went to the wealth mgmt firm where Quinn is a figurehead partner. Anyways, I’m over it (thanks IUFB!), but I wanted to play the Fire Mike Woodson hits one more time.4 points

If the game is called similarly Monday night UConn will struggle. They were lucky to hang on despite the number of fouls they had and abysmal shooting from Illinois. The last two games, while impressive, didn't demonstrate a team fully capable of beating either Michigan or Arizona. I'll be there Monday night so I can eat crow on the spot if need be, however that will be secondary to the pill I'll have to swallow all over again while watching the Buckner-Woodson Fail Bowl unfold right in front of my eyes as May and Mullins are on each side of the ball for a national title.4 points -
Coaches can't just "transfer" willy-nilly. There are buyouts to deal with. NIL Collectives should do the same with players -- you want to transfer after a year, you can buy out your contract.4 points

Not to rub too much salt in the wound. But I have a good source that Dusty May was already calling and recruiting Braylon Mullins towards the end of his tenure at FAU. Obviously I don't think he expected a 5-star recruit to go to FAU. But he probably knew he'd be leaving for a big job in the Midwest, and wanted to get started on a key guy early. Can't say with 100% certainty. But IMO, if we had moved on from Woodson after year 3, it is likely that May would have been coaching Mullins at IU this year.3 points -

Thank God we'll always have that magical last year of Woodson's tenure to soften the blow of watching Dusty May play for a title in his 2nd year at UM.3 points

Michigan’s best is best, no doubt. But if you had to bet on which team’s more likely to actually play their best game it’s got to be UConn because of Hurley. Between him and Lendeborg possibly not being right it’s gonna be really interesting. But if Lendeborg is close to 100% he’s the nastiest matchup in the country and UM would be a big hill to climb.3 points
