Honest question:

Does anyone know of a time when it had to be announced a coach was returning next season and that coach actually worked out and didn't eventually end up getting fired?

Admittedly a long time ago but….

Before season began I posted on one of the threads (not sure which one) that IU men’s basketball would finish in the middle of the conference pack and win a game or two in big ten tournament and March Madness tournament. The ceiling would be sweet sixteen remaining team in March Madness tournament.

Does IU men make March Madness via winning remaining games and Big Ten tournament wins as getting into championship game?  Or NIT?  Any kind of success gets NIT bid.

That is what I expected.

If it has to be Woodson throw the bank and several current players and go hard for quality players in the portal. Crean about 4 or 5 off this team and let's see what happens!

If that talk is accurate about a GM, shouldn't that person be in place for the opening of the portal?  If we don't put that person in place until next season, what is the point?
If you need to hire a gm that means you stink as a coach. Name me one other college with a gm

Still fuming this morning.
Does Quinn Buckner really believe Dusty May isn't good enough for IU? But in his mind, Mike Woodson is?
What a horse's @$$.
May is going to get hired by somebody else this spring.

"Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies." ~ Andy Dufresne

I'm not a big Bruce Pearl fan, but to me, he at least represented hope. That for the next 5-6 years, we'd be an upper-tier B1G team and and a no-brainer for the NCAA tournament. And maybe even a Sweet 16 team -- and beyond. That he'd actually recruit, instead of sitting around smoking cigars and drinking wine -- and he'd convince the best in-state players to come to Bloomington while keeping tabs on top out-of-state players as well.

I'm little skeptical about Dusty May and Josh Schertz. But to me, they at least represented hope. That for the next 10-15 years, we'd be an upper-tier B1G team and no-brainer for the NCAA tournament, and maybe every once in a while, make a deep run once there. That they were go-getters -- and I felt they'd work tirelessly to get the absolute best players for the program. Not necessarily five-stars -- but guys who can shoot, play smart and know the game. That they'd put a stop to the best in-state players signing with that school 100 miles to the north.

Those guys gave me hope. That we could go into just about every game with a chance to win. That on Selection Sunday, we'd have a spot secured.

With Woody, I don't see any hope for this program. He's 65, still doesn't know the college game and doesn't seem willing to stretch the far corners of the state to convince the top talent to play at SSAH. I don't see how the next year will be any better than this year -- especially if half (or more) of our roster goes portaling.

That's why yesterday's news was so deflating.

I want to believe Andy, but the administration is making me give a nod to Red.

Woodson had to be told to go see Mullins after the total no show they pulled. He's semi retired and doesn't want to put in the effort it takes, I have a hard time believing that after 3 years he doesn't realize how much work goes into being a college HC.

It's more a product of him not thinking he has to, IMO, than not wanting to put the effort in.

I legit think Mike Woodson believes he swings such a huge **** coming from the NBA, so he doesn't have to step into a high school gym and recruit 16-18 y/o kids. His reputation precedes him.

In his mind, he's a few years removed from coaching Carmelo Anthony in NYC and some of the greatest athletes in the world. And now he has to go to Greenfield and shake hands with Braylin Mullins?

Yeah, he's above that.

A few weeks ago I went to the BMV, paid a fee of $9.95 to turn in my IU license plate for a generic truck plate for my Toyota FJ Cruiser. For some reason last summer I bought a purple UE ball cap and couldn't figure out why, but I know now. I don't even wear my IU stuff anymore and I am an IU grad and a fan for as long as I can remember, back in the late 1950s.

Yet, this new IU football coach has me damn excited about this season.

Last IU merchandise I bought was a Military Appreciation Operation Hat Trick pullover. Wore it once now it's in the closet because it's gotten embarrassing being an IU fan. They won't be serious, I won't by merchandise or tickets etc.

A cousin keeps telling me I cam come over to watch UK play, if I didn't loathe that program it'd be tempting; at least they have want to win and do what it takes. They would've run Woodson out of town by now.

There are many things about IU of which I am proud. Sports include our almost always outstanding soccer team and recently the women's bball team, and though I'm not much of a football fan anyway, there's reason for optimism there.

For me though, apparel isn't just about the IU basketball program, and I'm sure not throwing away clothes just because we currently have some stupid decisionmakers in place. It's my college, my academic foundation, the campus that remains one of the nicest I've ever seen and I had the pleasure of spending 4 years on it, hey, it's my school. Trash gear because of some stupidity around the bball program? To each his own, not me. And for what it's worth, this is imo short term.

Not a fan of Woodson and his ridiculous inability to see the incredible stupidity of ignoring 3-point shooting, that's mind boggling stubborn, self-defeating inanity. But that leaf will fall and we'll have new coaching staff in a year or so. Not going to judge that until it happens.

If Pearl or Oats was available, then I would have made a change. I’m not in charge and the decision has been made. Is there a pathway forward to be successful? Yes. Isn’t appealing? No.

If the right players stay and the big donors are going to splash the cash (which I fully expect going down this road), then next year could be a good one. At what cost? Depends on who they get this portal season.

Need to keep MgBako, Trey, Cupps, McKinney, and Malik. Go get a rim protecting center. An athletic experienced PG. Then the rest need to be multi year transfers and 1-2 high school kids that recommit after a coaching change. It’s can’t be all 1 year rentals from the portal because that means that there is no foundation when Woodson eventually leaves.

You would have to define “good” for me to sign off on the fact that a talent infusion could lead to a good season.  Two problems I see with your strategy are:

1) getting a rim protecting center means another year two bigs on offense, which is a Woody clearly struggled with this year

2) no matter the talent, you have woodys strategy problem on defense. We’ve gotten worse every year. Even lock down guards wouldn’t solve the problem because they’re obviously taught to over help, even to the post when we have the existence of a lockdown center.

Having a defense ranked near 100 in efficiency is a recipe for a average team, at best, unless you have the number 1 offense and can run and gun like Alabama.

By the time you get new "staff" (coaches, GM, whatever), the best guys in the portal will be long gone.  You need to have people doing the portal work now -- evaluations of guys you project to be heading into it so you can move quick and back channel contacts if necessary.
