Someone needs to protect Woody from CMW. If he wants to go out on a high note it won’t come via wins and losses. It will be about leaving at the right time… ie the moment Bruce Pearl says he’s ready to come north.

Doubtful. Putting myself in Dolson’s shoes, having to get this right, and understanding the importance of timing with the portal, there’s no way I even reach out to the Stevens camp. If I was to guess, it would have been Scott Drew or Nate Oats. Both guys would win a natty here. Drew, in my eyes, would be a Kelvin Sampson equivalent, as far as upside potential at IU (Not relating to what happened). Oats not far off.

My only question on Jerry’s update is are the assistants aware that they are essentially on 1-year deals unless they have a miraculous run to the Final Four? As an assistant, that wouldn’t sit well with me, if true.

With all due respect, Mike Woodson (the coach) has not earned the right to dictate his own terms. He's accomplished very little as the head coach of Indiana - one trip to the second round. This is not a Jim Boeheim situation, with a coach slipping off at the end of a Hall of Fame career.

It feels like Woodson will be retained as the IU head coach because he was a great player here 45 years ago. The same reason he was hired in the first place.

Nothing says incompetent more than willfully agreeing to endure another poor season while also being willing to negatively impact recruiting for the next 2 seasons.

The administration has to exit the echo chamber of “we must tread lightly with Woody” and look at the big picture. At this point they are on the verge of taking the worst path possible (other than extending him).

Thanks for sharing. Do you have the sense that if Woodson fails to build a competitive team via the portal (gaping holes like this year) they could end him early? Given the tons of the Scotts and Cook's money, it might actually happen, but just curious. I have some real concerns about what players would be willing to come play in his "system", so could that still end with him being dismissed?

Jerry did say earlier that a poor portal haul could move the needle

I read that as, a poor portal haul will definitely make last year the last year. No freaking way they can him mid-season or even pre-season. Unless they can fabricate an immediate health step down.

Yes, except it's pretty good pay for a year and a year to make connections for the next year.

I would say that if this the route IU is going, I would expect that we'll be looking at not just this season making our team up from the portal but the next season as well.  Even if 2025 recruits were to commit to IU good chance they decommit on a coaching change.

Think I'll be out of the thread for awhile.  Woodson isn't getting fired this year and I'm already in the acceptance phase of that.  Just hope for the best in the portal and that the playing style picks up next year.

Which means we go into next season as 90% of fans expected but it's considered ok? Seems moronic to expect a coach who has proven nothing except under-delivering to deliver. 100%. They care more about massaging Mike Woodson’s enormous ego than they do winning basketball games. 

Basically we know you aren't the guy but you get another year anyway. Unreal.

So, in the BoT’s “wisdom”, the chosen path to success is to try to get an incredible level of talented players who are willing to take money to play in a terrible system under a mediocre coach, then somehow overachieve and perform at an elite or championship level. Which would require Woodson to suddenly do everything he has failed to do in three years. Then, even if it were miraculously successful, it would be completely unsustainable. Or, if it’s not successful, they’ll fire him later for the same things they’ve already decided he deserves to be fired for now, they’re just not ready to do it yet.

As opposed to making a change now and getting a coach who has the skills and experience to get started now, and do this in a proven and more successful way.

Sounds like a great plan… what could go wrong?

God help us…these people don’t know what the ______ they are doing, IMO.
