Fire Coach Woodson Thread

I understand that in this case. I'm saying done football players get paid to visit.

It’s possible I guess, but it’s definitely not six figures. Maybe a couple grand walking around money. It isn’t a bottomless pit. It would also have to be funded by bag men or true fans, because coaches still can’t. Unrelated but there are already rumblings that the model isn’t sustainable from the people making big donations to NIL. Which makes sense. If I was a billionaire I might be willing to fund a turn around, but year over year? It’s a terrible investment. And in my experience with rich people, they generally don’t continue doing that with poor ROI.  that’s why I think this comes to a head fairly soon. Even the Simons and Cooks are expecting ROI— in this case, winning.  Nick Saban more or less said he retired because after the Rose Bowl his players wanted to know 2 things to stay, how much money am I going to make, and how much am I going to play. It’s going to be a wild few years once the CFP expands next year.

Dan Dakich on March 11, 2024:
”Everybody ever involved with Indiana University Men’s basketball should never comment about the fans, and that includes Mike Woodson, except to say thank you. Period. Because those fans show out. And those fans know.”

Dakich, again on March 11th:
”A walk-on, err, back up kid that loses the ball every time it gets tough. Every time a tough play needs to be made, Leal loses the basketball.”
Really? REALLY?!!?

Dan Dakich is a hypocrite and leverages flat out lies as a method to get clicks. Spot on? If anyone is riding with Dakich instead of a kid like Leal… that’s a prime example of someone that “needs to chill.”

Yup. Dude needs to persona non grata.

Hypocritical *******.

Yeagley said there was a meeting tomorrow before Woody return announcement and then that Dolson burner was saying there was a meeting tomorrow as well after the announcement.

Not believing any of it currently, but do we know if there is any sort of meeting actually happening tomorrow?

Who knows. Woodson is getting another year while having zero recruits coming in. Ware is gone and we’ll see who else leaves in the portal.

I choose none of the above. I was never a huge Leal fan, but was mostly indifferent. Just didn’t think he was worth the scholarship. Now, though, definitely not a fan.

See, I think that is creating your own story to fit your own thoughts

There was a lot of cheers for these comments that have so many upset here. All of them. Some pretty loud.

You can be mad. Be upset they said it. Same as they can be mad at all the lies that have been told and narratives pushed by over the top fans and IU media.

The “fans” that were rooting to lose and tweeting at Liam that they hope he stays when Dusty or Pearl is the coach. Or that they hope we lose enough to get a new coach before he comes. (Yes, actual IU “fan” accounts and not Purdue imposters, easy to tell). Or the ones tweeting the day after Zach O. story to all the players that they should enter the portal because this admin is a joke.

I’m sorry but those aren’t real fans. They aren’t and the players and coach have a right to be mad. Same as you can but maybe try to see it from their POV and realize maybe you are in the minority who is ok with that behavior by “fans.”

It’s sad that the coach who was hired to unite the fanbase has seemingly driven a wedge deeper than anyone could imagine.  I will say that if this division has united the coach and the team so that they continue to play hard and win I wish we would have started this conversation more seriously back in December.

I know a lot of people don’t like how he acts, understood, but he sure says a lot of the things most of us have been feeling on this board in this clip.

I wish someone else in the IU alum said this.  His credibility is sh!t with me, but spot on this time.

Whether there is a meeting or not, Woodson is getting year 4. So I wouldn’t put much stock into this meeting, whether it happens or not.

I gave you examples of what I think isn’t “real fan” behavior very specifically. Do you feel those are acceptable as a fan?

Yes. A fan can want one loss today so that there may be hundreds of wins later. Sometimes good things need to be pruned back for greater growth in the future… and imho this was far from good. The thing is I’m not calling you less of a fan even though I think you’re being short-sited.

We all root for what we think is the best thing for the IU basketball program. You’re not any more of a “true fan” for rooting for what you think is best than anyone else. Woodson, and many of his disciples, don’t want ‘fans.’ They want yes men.

FWIW (not sure if I posted this, started to post it before but got called away), but in terms of fan reaction to Woodson in pregame introductions I was expecting a very harsh crowd reaction.  Was most definitely more cheers than boos, at least 75/25 (although I didn't do an official count, LOL).  Scott Dolson didn't get booed during a TV timeout when he was on court presenting an award to a former IU athlete, but considering he was giving an award to an 80+ year old man it would have been pretty rough to boo at that point.

I didn't stay for the senior day ceremonies but did listen to them on the radio on the way home.  When I heard Woody's speech and Leal's comment, I was expecting to hear mostly cheers and a light smattering of boos -- it was a senior day ceremony so I wouldn't have expecting much booing but I would have thought some would have.  But I didn't hear any audible boos on the radio.

Anyway, not speaking to how anyone felt on BTB about the speech, just letting you know what I observed at the game.

Why would you distinguish them as true vs untrue fans?  That’s kind of broad.  Why not just call them out as crazy people — ie; focus on the conduct and not the fan status. Twitter etc all have block and mute features.  Maybe they should use them.  I have never tweeted a player, recruit or anyone.  I want Woodson gone now because he’s turned out to be very bad at his job.  Am I a true or untrue fan?

Outside of two posters on this site I haven’t conversed with anyone (online or in person) who wants CMW to return. It’s anecdotal but it’s my experience in southern Indiana.

Just my opinion:

1.  Woodson's comments are what I expect from him.  There are lots of @sses in the world, though.  Bob Knight was one but he won consistently and to a high degree.  Knight and Woodson both feel like they don't own the media or fans explanations.  Knight obviously was a MUCH better coach -- not debatable -- so most IU fans accepted the ego.  That's the bottom line, Woodson's ego doesn't match results which is why he's not liked.

2.  In terms of Leal, what he said could have been more nuanced.  Speech was short and obviously everyone is focused on the 'real fans' line.  Would have been better if he said something like 'we really need the support from the fans....it's can be tough when your own fans are rooting against you'.  Might not have pleased some fans, but would have been a more digestable message.  Leaving it at an open ended 'true fans' stated leaves too much interpretation.

Count me as an NIL hater. It’s professional sports without any regulation. In the NBA you have salary caps, multi-year contracts, maximum amounts. There’s structure. In college basketball every player is a mercenary demanding more money every year or else they’ll bolt and go somewhere else. It will ruin college sports if it continues unchecked.

I love NIL. Before NIL IU hesitated playing the game that Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, UNC, Etc would play. Oh wait that’s the “blue bloods”. IU has the boosters to be a top program again bc of NIL. It’s just a matter of getting the right structure and people in place to make it happen.

The transfer portal and recruiting should be much better than what it has been. And I think IU is about to over pay for players this offseason. Which means it’s an all in situation for Woodson. Boosters will know they are over paying to fix this years mistakes and mismanagement of the roster. But with that overpaying comes more scrutiny from the power brokers behind the program (boosters).

In my mind,  Michigan fans/boosters have discussed this for football, doing a massive fundraising campaign for NIL. Set up some sort of trust with $100 mil plus in it. Invest that money and then pay NIL through the profits and never touching the initial principle. Then you don’t have to keep going back to the same boosters for more money yearly. If IU did that for basketball they would  be a top 5 team yearly bc they would get the top players. When you have alumns worth 1-7 billion dollars, that kind of money is attainable.
