The whole debacle that has been IU basketball for 20 years now, is not that RMK left.  It was the way he was let go.  If IU, and RMK, had handled the situation better we probably would have been closer to UNC.  They had one failure after Dean left.  The person following an icon is probably not going to succeed.  

I would say it is 50-50 at best that Woodson succeeds.  I truly hope he does, but it will not have much to do with him being an IU player at one time.  

I am in the same fan boat as you.  Started to know what basketball was in the early 70's.  Graduated IU in 87.  

RMK made this generation of IU basketball and that is the culture I am talking about

This 26 year old had a few tears in his eyes, lol.

I hated the idea when I first saw him mentioned as a candidate. I really hated it. I wanted a big name coach and I was very adamant about that. But now I'm all in on Coach Woodson. Seeing someone who loves IU basketball like I do as the new head coach was really cool. It's not just another job that happens to pay more than his last job for him. It's his dream job, and I know he's going to do everything he can to get the program back to where we all want it to be.

If Woodson and Dolson can bring back the old school jersey's full time, I'll start to buy in more.

I need to see who the staff is, who Woody can convince to stay and come via portal, and recruiting this summer.

I want the jerseys they had during the Zeller/Oladipo years. The jerseys we've had the past few years are trash. The tops don't even match up with the shorts. 

Hopefully we find out about the assistants and the current players here soon. After the past few days I'm in need of more IU information to keep the high going, lol.

He did when Archie was hired for sure. Not sure about the others.

I think it was in 2017 when we hired Archie. I think Coach Woodson pushed for him with Larry Brown as an assistant.

Yes it was. He came to town to talk to Bill Cook about putting in a good word for him. But Fred wasn't taking calls from anyone at that time.

And at the time of Crean's hire, I believe there was an unwritten mandate that it was not going to be an IU guy in any way, shape or form.  A. J. Guyton has always been absolutely adamant this was the university's position.  Now with McRobbie headed out the door, Glass gone and a failed Archie experiment, new thinking taking over.

One of the most important things I heard throughout his media day yesterday was something on the lines that he didn't have an ego when it comes to basketball.  He's always learning and wants to surround himself with people that will help him.  

Hope this works.  Congrats Coach Woodson.

I'm 71 and lived through two dark periods in IUBB history. The first was the six years between McCracken and RMK and the post RMK nightmare we've been in. I always follow and support the team and tried to get excited during the 2002 almost championship and Crean's number one rated team, but of course those runs were temporary and always ended in mediocrity or worse.  Coach Woody has had an amazing career at every level and worked with twenty somethings his whole life, and basketball at all levels. Adding coach Matta is like an amazing benefit.  This feels like a return to where we used to be. Win or lose I love that we have someone that's as passionate about IUBB as we are, but I really think this is going to be great. It feels great to be excited again!

I’m 27 and I feel the exact same way. I honestly started getting a little choked up when I watched his press conference. It’s really exciting seeing a head coach who makes it obvious how much IU means to them.

Coach Woodson seems to be a well-respected leader, a thoughtful person who gets it, a sensitive friend and proponent of the extended family, a lover of all things basketball especially Indiana, and a focused coach of young adults and men.  He seems serious and will draw the line about certain things.  And the players and everyone else will clearly know where that line is drawn.  But, of course, that is the impression the university and Coach Woodson are trying to get out to us.

During the press conference, Coach Woodson was being extremely careful to stress certain things.  He wanted the message to be clear.  And he was overwhelmed at times because of all the emotions, the memories, and the thoughts.  

These next few months are so vitally important.  Getting the right staff, making connections with all of the players individually and then as a team, getting to know Thad Matta and AD Dolson, the NCAA from a coaching perspective, prospective recruits, transfers, moving those pieces around on the multi-dimensional chessboard...

IU basketball was great before RMK, during, and will be great afterwards.  The new coach has arrived.  Bring it!
