Understood. I wasn't trying to say that Stevens doesn't have ample reason to potentially want to come to IU. Just that it's a slightly different situation than Harbaugh who starred at UofM and grew up in Ann Arbor, and also was on the outs at his NFL job.

But, again, overall I still think it's a good analogy!

Did you grow up in Indiana?

No. Matt Painter did, and I doubt he's coming here, though.

The point is just it isn't an absolutely perfect analogy. There are also differences that run in the other direction. Harbaugh hadn't won a Super Bowl when he went back, while Stevens has won an NBA Championship, which favors us.

Question for someone that knows but when trying to interview an NBA person do you have to get permission from the organization or owner before interviewing the candidate? Just wondering since Brad is the President do we need to ask someone for a formal interview?

I’m sure another NBA team would have to but I doubt Dolson would need to nor should he.

If said program were to be able to interview an NBA President, hopefully they would do it with a HUGE bag of cash sitting on the table and plenty of YouTube videos from Indianas heyday to motivate and spark emotions!

I think if it’s outside the NBA, they don’t need permission. For example, Buck’s GM Horst was requested by the Pistons to be their GM and the Bucks immediately denied the interview last season.

Just make sure you ask the little miss to kindly step out so the big boys can talk.

What I want to know is who would the next coach even want to keep from the current roster?

Plenty of guys on IU's roster could be winning players in a different environment. Myles Rice already showed it last season.

For example, Mackenzie Mgbako is not my favorite player on this roster. I find him incredibly frustrating. But it's easy to imagine him contributing to a winner under a different coach who makes him guard 4s, and doesn't tolerate poor effort or jacking contested 17 footers.

Technically, we'd probably want to permission just to ensure the Celtics didn't sue for contractual interference. But as a practical matter, I can't see them doing that, so I doubt it would matter.

Edit: But that would probably apply more to a finalized contract phase. We wouldn't be tampering just by engaging in preliminary talks, since that's just an NBA rule.

I know people call us crazy but KU fans on the internet are getting antsy with bill since they’ve just been good the last three years instead of best team in the country

Hmmm…wonder what’s changed in the past 3 years that might have made things different/leveled the playing field?

(Hint…it’s an acronym that rhymes with pill and used to be illegal… and we’re not talking about weed for the tokers out there!!)

Knows he’s not at THE top of our list, but holding out to see if our search gets to him……

Certainly seems like some of our posters in the know are pretty confident our search will be done before it gets past 1A.

Yeah, agreed. Everyone would tire of Cronin's "it's always someone else's fault" antics very quickly as well. He's a solid coach who doesn't handle pressure or adversity well and is past his peak at UCLA already.

Kind of sounds like Izzo who has won big in the big ten. I don't know if the ones complaining about how coaches act is to young to remember how coaches use to be. Go watch clips of coaches like Rollie Masimino, Lou Carnesacca, Bob Knight, Gene Keady, Jud Heathcote to just to name a few. What we see today from coaches is tame compared to these coaches

That’s a great question. This is what ChatGPT said on the topic—

If you’re representing a college or university and want to interview an NBA coach or executive for a coaching or front-office position, you still typically need to request permission from the NBA team before conducting the interview.

NBA teams often have contracts with their coaches and executives that include buyouts or restrictions on interviews. While colleges don’t operate under the NBA’s jurisdiction, professional teams generally expect institutions to follow proper channels out of respect for existing agreements.

It’s best to contact the NBA team’s front office—likely starting with the President of Basketball Operations (Brad Stevens, in the case of the Celtics)—to formally request permission. If the coach or executive is under contract, the team may allow the interview, deny it, or set conditions such as compensation for an early departure.

If you want to interview Brad Stevens for a coaching or front-office position at a college or university, you would need to request permission from **Wyc Grousbeck**, the **majority owner and governor of the Boston Celtics**.

Since Stevens is the **President of Basketball Operations**, he is one of the top decision-makers in the organization, meaning there’s no higher-ranking front-office executive above him. In these cases, ownership typically handles such requests. You would likely need to go through the Celtics’ ownership group, with Grousbeck being the primary point of contact.

It would be best to formally reach out to the Celtics' organization through their front office, either via email or direct call, to ensure you're following the proper channels.
