Other than Beard, I do think it’s interesting that we aren’t getting any early rumors from the big sites about people we’ve reached out to or who have some legs. Unless trilly or peegs have said otherwise and I’ve missed it.

i know it’s been two days, but not sure how quickly mid season vs traditional hiring processes go. With a big national spotlight I just figured we would start hearing tons of “rumors” of some sort right out of the gate. Seems like we are only hearing Stevens stuff.

I think the Trilly piece is really interesting here, and probably confirms that there is one target right now and until that target says no, the search doesn’t shift. Part of me also wonders about the stuff Thamel said on Saturday. He made it pretty clear there was and would be a lot of interest in our job with the proven NIL. How hilarious would it be if Woody getting 5 million in roster money to fail got us a huge name lol

I think Scott likes having the Beard information out there even if it’s all coming from Beards agent and some friends who are former players. It lets him do his work behind the scenes without people paying attention.

Yep, especially as perhaps THE premier job opening (seems like Davis will get one more year at UNC).

Dusty will either get a nice raise or the IU job based on his careful answer. Beard can dance for the job if he wants, it’s not going to him. But I bet within a week there’s some new contract or extension discussions reported for a few guys with leverage.

I think you’re right. If we’ve got everyone in the know saying that Beard is ours if we want him, that’s not a bad floor for Scott to rest on while he reaches for much higher.

its like those movies where the hot girl tells everyone you’re cute and suddenly everyone else likes you even more. Except in this case our hot girl sometimes nips a little too much whisky and likes to be handsy so we won’t ever really date her.

By the way, y’all may not like Jeff Goodman, but he has sources at IU. He won’t come out and say much declarative, but he dropped Cronjn’s name early and hasn’t backed off.

I don’t disagree at all but Goodman is top of the list for coach shills — whether he’s helping a friend get a buck in exchange for access or actually reporting is basically impossible to differentiate here or anywhere else.

(Lots of the Archie hype was from guys like Goodman.)

Going to be a long couple weeks haha.

Spring portal is open from March 24 - April 22. Final four starts 4/5 with championship game on 4/7.

Will be interested to see how quickly we announce, especially if it is a coach in the tourney, to give them time once they are bounced to start working the portal.

I believe Goodman's daughter still goes to IU?

I also saw a brief YouTube video in which he was pimpin' Beard pretty good. So who knows?

I’ll go ahead and say it *ducks*. I would be fine with Cronin, we’d be consistently good. We spent a half a week on how IU needs an “alpha” (I hate that goofy term), strong personality, etc. etc. It doesn’t really get more strong personality than a guy who publicly called his players delusional, and has now gone like 6-2 since or whatever they are.

There, I said it. I in no way believe it gets to Cronin, and Goodman is a low down dirty snitch.

Very funny that Stevens doesn’t check a couple of the boxes from Thamel’s list: not a sitting head coach, and no P4 success, technically.

Recall that Thamel was early with the Thursday report on Woodson’s future so has some credibility here.

I assume even Thamel would say that obviously Stevens exceeds those given his circumstances. Still, funny that one of the guys everyone agrees would be an immediate unanimous A+ doesn’t meet some of the checkboxes.

I don’t think it’s a smokescreen; anyone else on the list probably does meet those aside from like Few (not P4) or Wright (off the board I’d assume, but not sitting coach).

Hopefully Cronin's name being tossed around is more of the same.

This is what a few of us have been saying for a while now. IU is willing to  pay its coaches (both Miller and Woodson had top 10 salaries at one point in their time at IU) along with being in the B1G (easier to get to the tournament), profit sharing, and NIL would make the job desirable. Even with the poor results the  last 8 years, IU has landed talent. The fan expectations are way down so that negative is overblown. As Miller and Woodson have shown, coaches get at least 4 years.

Cronin would be the most mid thing IU could do.

He has been fine at UCLA, a place with so many resources. He had a fluke Final Four appearance from a First Four position.

I'd rather see IU take a chance on someone whose had success at a school with fewer basketball resources.

Cronin has already shown what he can do at an upper-echelone school, and I want more than that for IU.

His antics on the court are comically juvenile. His offenses are mostly pedestrian--and sometimes brutal to watch.

At their best his teams do play great defense, which is fun to watch.

I'm not saying he is terrible, but I am saying he is what he is at this point, and ultimately while certainly an improvement from what we've had, he is not the person to get us where we want to be.

Preface with I am not stumping for Cronin, just pointing out some stuff. The guy has won 70% of his games at every stop. Like remarkable consistency, that no one we’ve hired since RMK has had. Also people think UCLA has resources? That school is in the red and has notoriously bad NIL.

Again, I don’t really want him, but IU could do much worse than Cronin.

Thamel does seem to be IU's go to national guy (at least for football).  He was the first to break the Cignetti hire news, as well as the first with all the Rourke injury updates (Thumb and ACL)

Cronin is a very good coach who would immediately be an upgrade to the last 8 years, but he doesn't really inject life and much-needed energy into the program.

I'm not sure how important that is, but it isn't nothing.

The last 8 years is 2 coaches competing for tallest midget, the bar is pretty low.

He really on Saturday seemed like the only national guy looking around going “do you all really not think IU could not pull someone big?” He’s like the only person I saw acknowledge the top of the B1G budget, top ten national NIL, and how much of a sell those would be.
