Younger; more likeable, lower buyout, and a higher ceiling imo.

After 22 years, we know who Cronin is.  He's a very good coach who will get us to the tournament consistently but it feels like the ceiling is pretty low.

Otz feels like he is just about to reach his peak, and we can get him right as he's about to get there.

In my opinion Otz is a guy who has proven he can do it at the high major level, but is still on an upward trajectory, while Cronin feels like he has somewhat flatlined at this point.  So while maybe not as safe of a hire as Cronin, it feels like a much bigger swing, without being a big gamble.

Having said all that, I just like Otz way more than I like Cronin... so basically vibes. Lol.

I think this is probably the best and only argument that matters re: Cronin/Otz, and sums up how I feel. He seems like he is peaking but has maxed out his potential at ISU. He might win a title there on an amazing run a la Drew at Baylor, but in this era I really do not think ISU is a place you can be FF caliber year in and year out.  Drew certainly hasn't been. Coaching matters, but eventually in the tournament, all the coaches are good and the jimmies and joes matter. If he wants to have the money and recruiting he needs to be at that level year over year, seems like we are a pretty rosy landing spot.

That said, I think his chances of coming here are less than 5%

What makes Otz a better candidate than Cronin?

He wins at Iowa State, big... in a good conference...

Cronin sort does ok at UCLA? In an average B1G and bad P12... and was 3-6 in the tourney at Cinci?

Age? Everything?

Both coaches are very similar.  They both make defense their trademark and recruit athletes that can play defense.  Their offenses seem to fluctuate from year to year depending on personnel.

I don't think I could bring myself to root for us if we hired Will Wade.

By no means do I hold Will Wade in any sort of favor, but if you've rooted for IU at all in the last 8 years you'd be able to root for them under him. He would have us competing, but I can't be sure of his ceiling. IU would at least be playing coherent basketball again and that's a start.

Goodman pumping up Otzelberger in a video this week.

Last week, I saw him on a YouTube video pimpin' Beard for the IU job.

Wonder who it'll be next?

Hard to put my finger on it, but I just don't care for that dude. I do think, however, his daughter does a pretty good job reporting on women's hoops.

Whichever coach is named, it’s because they WANT the job. Scott D will not try to lure a coach if they don’t want the job of being in the limelight. Otz doesn’t seem to maybe want that? It’s something I’ve tried to think about through this process.

I'd have to go back and watch Field of 68 to confirm, but I'm pretty sure in their initial videos Goodman said Otz would be his top choice for Indiana but Otz wouldn't go to Indiana.

If he's changing his tune it's probably because he heard some level of legitimate interest.

Hopefully they recruit athletes who are skilled at the game of basketball. Seen too often the concept of bringing highly athletic guys who have no basketball skills or smarts.

Why?

Because I really don’t want to have to post this every time IU loses

Will Wade lost

I want no part of that guy anywhere near the program I’m invested in

if he is hired then I will have a choice to make on how much I’m invested into the program moving forward

Or because that's the biggest name after Brad and Dusty to generate clicks.

Curious too. Why no Wade?   I get he made mistakes in the past, but he paid his dues with the NCAA (who most of us probably trust FIFA or the IOC more than NCAA).

Major programs were vetting $ean Miller last off season or two as well.

Hate to go there, but Wades offenses are much more forgivable than Beards

I’m not sure anybody is saying we should take McCollum over Stevens, Pearl, Drew, or even Buzz….but a lot of people on this forum want Cronin, Brownell, or even Pitino Jr., I think some of us would prefer taking a shot with McCollum that’s all, of course there are better, very expensive top coaches, but rumors don’t indicate that is the direction we are going?

I don't know about "a lot". And some of these supposed rumored names are being thrown around by people who have a lot to gain by having any rumors.
