If I was a donor and skeptical of the hire I wouldn't contribute as much; same reason I wouldn't have given a cent to NIL this year just to be burned, not confident it's a good investment.

Makes sense. I hear what you, @IUBtown and @IUHoosierJoe are saying.

You'd hope donors would give a new coach a great start even if not their preferred choice, but what you guys are saying makes sense too.

Yeah 3 years a BYU in a mid major conference WCC only his last year at BYU when they moved to the Big 12 was a high major conference hence 1 year coaching in a high major conference before Kentucky hired him

Since 2000, the guys who've won championships categorized by where they had come from prior to joining the winning program:

*13 titles, 7 coaches - mid-major:  Cal, Calhoun, Donovan, Drew, Hurley, K, Wright

*8 titles, 5 coaches- power conference:  Bennett, Pitino, Self, G Williams, R Williams

*3 titles, 3 coaches - assistant coach ranks:  Boeheim, Izzo, Ollie

This would be the worst idea of all time. Hey let’s get people to think that the coach they want most is coming, and then it not be him. That’ll go over well.

Furthermore, if Brad had indeed removed himself as a candidate, it would be logical for Dolson to make sure everyone in his inner circle (including donors) knew this so they would stop spreading false rumors.

Not much of a denial.  Very similar to what Brad said.

True.  And really, no coach midseason has ever said: “Hell yea I’d take that other job” or “You got me Mr/Mrs Reporter, I already accepted another gig I’m leaving.”

It’s a denial right up until accepting.

Look I get it some of you just love mccollum. I don't. I think it's too risky regardless of what he did in d2. Everyone has their own opinion.

I don't have "love" for McCollum, though. That's the thing. I have watched Drake one full game all year and the highlights of two more games. IMO, you're generalizing your fear. You just want a good ball coach. Let's find one.

And yeah, of course, everyone has their own opinion, which should be understood getting on here.

Idc what's normal, Idc what "their job is" ...... these questions are lame for a coach prepping his team for the postseason and having the best season of his career. So lame.

What's he supposed to say? lol If he's been contacted, so be it. That first line is a carbon copy of ANY and ALL coaches when approach about another job interest.

In addition, even if he REALLY DOESN’T WANT TO LEAVE, even rumored interest is helpful in getting more $ to stay. This is true in most jobs! Use the leverage.

Yeah, it’s the dumbest thing.  Nobody has ever admitted they were considering another job at this point in the season, but everyone asks and then takes these statements as gospel that they are staying where they are.  So silly.

I think Brownell's "rumored connection" to IU is born purely from writers speculating that he could be a candidate.

And that is for two reasons

1) He's had a couple very good seasons

2) He's from Indiana

and I would think about 90% of that speculation is because of No. 2. I obviously don't know for sure, but I have doubts that he is or ever was a serious candidate.

As much as I'd like to believe that, plenty of people have said he is actually a candidate.

Ding Ding Ding

You, Sir, have got it. Brownell’s only a candidate in a lazy, connect the dots sort of way. Would be utterly floored if he’s actually in play here.
