No I said I hate the system and college athletes shouldn't be paid. I could handle it if it was actually NIL rather than pay for pay through the collectives

So you just want some sham job to pay them an exorbitant salary  so you can  pretend that they are playing for the school for the love of the university or go back to the exploitative indentured servitude that the NCAA and university imposed upon student athletes while raking in billions.

You find it more just that some athletes had a hard time paying for clothes or trips home or even food so that the schools could just pocket that extra $10M they earn off the athletes? Big changes are needed, but the old system was far more unjust.

Spoiler: Little Chinese kids don't make your clothes for $1.27 a day for the love of the company either.

I never bought that players had any trouble paying anything in college. They would had to totally blow  their money to not have money to live off. They get around 1500 for housing so you get a couple of roommates then keep the rest for spending. Also your scholarship covered housing as well and that money goes to the student if not living in the dorm. It also provides money for food and if you don't take the meal plan then that money goes to the student. My daughter was on a full ride to IU and a Pell grant and she received enough money at the start of the semester to pay for her apartment and all of her bills.

Why should they have to live that way when people want to give them millions of dollars?

The top of the Power 5 conferences may have gazillions to throw at 500 ballers.  And the rest of the crowd of athletes from less advantaged universities get a trickle.

Kind of like those millionaires that are born with a silver spoon in their mouths.  They are entitled and 'deserve' it.    The rest of us may struggle getting a living wage.  And certainly those with disadvantages get less.

But hey...that's it.  The NCAA definitely blew it.  But the NCAA is the power universities who were in charge.

Somehow, someway...there has to be a sense of fairness or of morals  or...social empathy.

I used to be rather conservative.  But the older I get...the more...I want to listen and respond with empathy.

We shouldn't be paying them because they aren't worth paying all this money to them. The individual players aren't what sells but the Universities name. The old system was way more than fair and now they are ruining college sports

While I agree the way things currently stand is extremely flawed, it's ridiculous to presume that the basketball programs on their own are the only draw for fans.

I guarantee you that the excess millions of eyeballs watching Cooper Flagg this year had little to do with the name on his jersey. And while not everyone is Cooper Flagg, the point still remains that each player that contributes to his team's success is a part of the program in his own right and is a draw for the fans. Players like TJD, Yogi, Zeller, Oladipo, etc., led Indiana to successful seasons and brought a lot more positive attention to the program. It is worth investing in players who are capable of playing winning basketball that makes Indiana a household name again.

Indiana used to be one of the top 2 or 3 names in college basketball because it produced players like Steve Alford, Calbert Cheaney, Kent Benson, etc., and of course we had a legendary coach but the players and their hard work and talent is what won us basketball games. Knight orchestrated it of course, but he didn't put the ball through the hoop. To act like the product of the players' labor has no monetary value is truly insane and is a very weak argument against paying players.

It's one thing to dislike the current system. I don't like it either and I think that the current NIL fund arms race is problematic and is leading to players getting way overvalued. But that doesn't mean the players don't deserve compensation for what they do. Without them there'd be no on-court product. Fans wouldn't show up to watch an empty court.

Most fans wouldn't show up if their jersey didn't say Indiana or insert college name.   Look at attendance for minor league teams like mad ants and that is what you would get for college teams if they were detached from the school

So people shouldn't be allowed to make over a million dollars because not everyone can? You are allowed to be a fan of those poor mid-majors who aren't getting paid millions (or being watched by millions.) No one is stopping you but yourself.

Trilly posting a gif for Harris tomorrow morning alluding to him being a Hoosier, nice long term pick up

Interesting roster as a top 10 Nil program.

Big money apparently with DeVries, Wilkerson, Bailey.

Didn’t “overspend”.

6’10, 6’8, 6’8.

I’m assuming our last guy will be 6’9+ gosh forbid a Bailey injury.

Lots of guys who haven’t won in college.

I like the emphasis on shooting. Curious to see if his scouting pays off on the unheralded guys.

Still looking for an additional shot blocker but I get your point. Kinda felt like the portal wasn’t as great as the last few years too

I never argued that the program isn't relevant to the equation. I'm saying that the argument that the players ARE irrelevant to the equation is a silly position to hold.

The best guys were going for 2-4 million this cycle. We only spent top for 1 guy. Lots of “names” out there, we just didn’t really want to get into bidding wars for them despite the money.

Team chemistry will be better. Coaching will be better. “Talent”. Let’s see. Hope we are finally the team that identifies the talent first.

Just such a very odd off season from start to finish.

Yeah definitely. All things considered I am encouraged though. Rabby made some subtle comments on how much had to be done in so little time tonight
