If a big-time coach will turn down doubling their salary because we aren't where were at as a program right now then we should probably take their name off the list. Replace "have to" with "might" and you've hit the nail on the head.

Yes I agree that we are still a big time job, whether it's top 5 or top something. So AH is right - UK got turned down by all the white whales with a top 5 job and while it's probably inaccurate when he says we're "not anywhere close" the point remains that white whales tend to already be where they want to be. I kinda poke at the younger fans for their more favorable opinion on Crean. But I can’t really blame them. I don’t know what any fans under 40 would even expect out of this program. Fans under 30 haven’t seen us do a thing unless they remember Davis’s one run when they were a little kid. Even a B+ coach that put together something like a S16 and E8 in his first four years would have the fans riled up. thebigweave, Uspshoosier and Home Jersey 3

And you can laugh at all of us for daring to believe there is still something special about IU. You don’t believe the job is still special, I get it and even understand the view in some respects. I think a lot of people on here last year would have taken Mark Pope in a heartbeat. Fun style of play. The only negative I saw was he played at UK. So a top 5 program got a really good coach and their still a top 5 program. Hopefully we go that route this time Muskie plays the four, GloryDays, AZ Hoosier and 3 others 6

You don’t see many teams that have been down 30 years get the white whale. Plenty of big time coaches will say yes however you don’t see the Stevens, Donavans coming in on a white horse to save a program I get what you guys are saying, and there's a lot of people who share that opinion. I just don't think we're your normal, average program that's been down. It's more like we've underachieved for 25 years since Knight. Those that are a little older will remember Alabama football from Bear Bryant (1982) to Nick Saban (2007). Just like our past 25 years (except they won a championship, and we only played for one). We can pretend there's no potential here, or we can go get our Nick Saban like Alabama did. It's entirely up to us how much longer we want to suck. Uspshoosier, Silat Player, taco corp and 2 others 5

Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and probably UNC are demonstrably better, imo. Infrastructure, admin, fan support, funds, etc.. are all better or at worst even with IU. From there you’d have to think IU is hands down better than the next group that starts with UCLA and probably includes Uconn, MSU, Lville and non basketball, but basketball friendly, schools like Tenn, Texas, Florida, etc… to say IU is a for sure a top 5 job. I’d say we’re one of the top 10 jobs that matter still. But that doesn’t mean people are beating down the door to get here. T White 1

ap2345 Posted February 3, 2025 Posted February 3, 2025 The thing is comparing IU to UK is tricky. None of the names they went after last year had real ties to UK or Kentucky until they got to Pope.
