They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

IU can absolutely become a good program again and a decent one at that quick. But it's not going to happen in a 1-2 year span. You're not ever going to erase a 30 year down period overnight. And with each lost season and each passing coach the desperation grows bigger and bigger every single year.

Somebody just did this with a much worse program, with less support, and in a harder sport to do it in. I'll let you figure out who it was.

OK I get what your saying. And that makes total sense. I just feel like this time you can't be cheap, you have to throw a ton of money at whoever you think can do the job. Your losing fans already, and it's going to take a big hit to get some back.

....we land a coach like BS, fans will be absolutely insane!  We will see students camping out in line to Assembly Hall, like the old days for their seat.

IU football literally just did after an entire program history of a “down period” with far worse NIL resources in a sport that’s much harder to make immediate improvements in given roster sizes.

Literally zero expectations for Cignetti and the football program. None.

Look at DeBoer and Alabama who went 9-3 in  year 1. Already on the hot seat.

That's IU's basketball expectations for a program who has shown nothing the last 30 years.

I think a lot of people on here last year would have taken Mark Pope in a heartbeat. Fun style of play. The only negative I saw was he played at UK. So a top 5 program got a really good coach and their still a top 5 program. Hopefully we go that route this time

.....totally agree. I also feel anywhere Pope ended up (NOT UK) would only be temporary. IMO, UK was his dream job.

That's what my son said to me the other day. He said can you imagine my freshman year at IU we get Cignetti and my sophomore year we get Stevens. I said that would be awesome but let's slow it down for now.

My son's a freshman there as well, and we're hoping for the same thing.

Those are not the expectations here, no matter how many different ways you try to say it.

100%. Listing jobs as top 5-10 jobs now has become an antiquated mindset. Crean took the job here because 15 years ago heritage jobs were a thing. If you wanted to be a legend that stuff mattered. Now it’s far less so. There’s nothing an IU can offer an Oats that he can’t get at Bama. The question about any job is are the resources and infrastructure in place to win at an elite level? If the answer’s yes then it’s a great job. The answer here is a big yes. So what they have to nail down is the fit of the guy. This job’s got heat. Not for everybody, but there are a bunch of guys who could do really well.

What's our record on madison the last 30 years like 1-25? But this king will cook. Lol.

This is such a wild take.

In the age of the transfer portal and NIL, this has never been less true.

And with IU's resources, the roster can be flipped so fast. I mean, Woody nearly flipped the roster last season. He can't coach, but he nearly flipped it out of necessity because he hasn't been doing any long-term recruiting.

I have no idea what you're talking about here...

One good season is not going to erase 30+ years of futility.

Pretty straight forward response.

And look what Louisville has done.  Pretty all new roster and coach

Louisville has a nice little year going for them. Doesn't change anything what I said. If Pat Kelsey continues this for 3-4 straight seasons it will have become an excellent hire. But he loses 8 of his top 10 players this year. Guessing an inevitable step back for him next season.
