The “compromise” by Dolson to let this go down this way saved us some good cash on the buyout. Lot of litigation today. Make no mistake about it, this was not Woody’s decision to retire.

I love IU basketball..but I've never quite felt so pissed about the current state of things.  Not at the end of archie or crean was is quite so... hopeless.  It's because we have to sit through a worthless meaningless 12 months, to fire him (which we COULD/SHOULD do right now) to start a 1-2-3 year rebuild with the next new coach.  Just rip the band aid off right now and let a new coach attempt to hit the portal.  Woody isn't the guy to use the portal. This is a joke.

This is why you don’t name buildings after living rich people who have nothing to do with basketball other than being rich.  We are beholden to the donor class beyond say if it was just Kroger Assembly Hall. Or *gasp* just Assembly Hall. Kentucky- Named after Rupp, Kansas— Named after Phog, UNC— Dean Smith etc, etc. if we weren’t a poverty program we would have told them, respectfully that AH would not be named after a donor and found something else like we did for Cuban. Kinda hard to argue with the families on the marquee.

Joke was on us though, he didn’t just mean as coach, he meant it literally, as in, not going to sectionals.

It was unbelievable that Indiana was debating whether or not give Woodson a fourth season, it was unbelievable they announced he was coming back (or, leaked to the Indy Star that he was coming back...sources say), it is no longer unbelievable that Mike Woodson is getting a chance for a fourth season. It should be but it is not. I keep reading, both on here and on Peegs, "Indiana has to make a move on Woodson", "IU has to get him to retire"...they do not feel they have to and therefore they will not. The Simon family (possibly the Cook family too, I don't know..."big donors" plural continues to get referenced so maybe it's more than just the Simon family) wants to give Woodson another year so he is getting another year. The status of the program does not matter, the trajectory does not matter, the data that says rebounding from this season to have a good 2024-2025 season would be historically unprecedented does not matter, the fact that Trey Galloway and Malik Reneau (who has absolutely no reason on paper to be unhappy...he's getting paid well, he's fed the ball in the post over and over and will continue to be, he plays until he's foul trouble...but if he leaves, it will be for one reason: he does not like or believe in Mike Woodson) might leave makes the hump/mountain all the harder to climb and does not matter. 

All that written, this is what is in front of us and I'm the type that has to attempt to make the best of something while wallowing in misery. This piece of information was brought up by a poster on Peegs, credit to him or her, and got me looking into it. So, it seems likely Kenny Payne gets canned from Louisville. He was a disaster as a head coach but was an accomplished recruiter in the past. As we know, Mike Woodson loves working with his friends and we think a new position that has to do with recruiting is being made to help Mike Woodson well, do his job. For his lack of coaching accumen, Payne actually puts effort into recruiting. Maybe Kenny Payne takes that job. If he does, Louisville is considered a potential leader for a guy IU was in on at one time: Joson Sanon. Sanon is a small forward, much like Liam McNeeley. He's a borderline 5-star prospect and is probably reclassing to 2024 (his natural class). He is a really good scorer. If he were to reclass and Payne came to Bloomington, maybe IU makes him some ridiculous offer to come to IU for a season and fill a spot on the roster. That'd be one down and like...8 or 9 to go ha.

His plan is to play golf all summer and let the Simon family throw stacks of cash at portal players.  Pretty obvious.

I think one of two things happened. It was never a big deal to the administration, he was always coming back but they started to hear from people asking questions so they released the statement.

Or they did to quiet things down and not try to figure out which way to go. 

Knowing the backing he has from one particular family I would still be surprised if anything happens. 

Except they haven't released a statement as far as I know. It was leaked to the media that Woodson was coming back but that is it. No official statement either way. Pretty bad way to run things if they are decided that he's coming back.

It's flat out insulting to me.  I pay attention to IU basketball / recruiting every day of the year.  I see 0 commits or positive trajectory for my program and I'm given this answer by woody?  Absolutely infuriating

I was embarrassed during the Wisconsin road game. I stopped watching his team after that. A team's character is a reflection of the coach's character.

He’s going to go after all the big names in the portal while looking Malik and Trey and likely McKenzie. He’ll tell all the portal kids he knows Carmelo and knows the NBA, same old boring pitch. 
 

At the end of the day, Woodson can’t coach. It’s been proven in the NBA and now college level. He’s better off as an assistant coach in the NBA.
