They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

Matta was said to have failed a physical.  I remember Goodman had a picture with him and shortly after reporting that he had failed a physical. I think.  Not sure if true but I do know Woody had been given the indication he would have the job when this news about Matta broke. I know Woody was pissed but tbh he could have also been mad because Dolson was forcing another person onto the staff.

I’m beginning to think Woodson is a control freak, lol!  I can see him throwing a tantrum when he’s not getting his way

As a reflect on what people are saying on here... I saw what Brad Stevens did in 2010/2011 and thought to myself, "there will never be anyone else like him."... Until I saw Chris Beard go to an E8, then to the Title Game the next year... We missed on Stevens, and we didn't go after Beard.... I thought there wouldn't be anyone else as good as Beard or Stevens.... Until I watched Dusty May (who's having an eerily similar records as Stevens did in his 2 year run).

If we miss on Dusty, I'm sure there will be another that will pop up in 3 to 5 or 8 years that will be another elite coach with loose ties to Indiana that could be a program changer. But the universe has been handing IUBB answers to all of our problems to change our program... The administration just isn't listening...

I am NOT defending Woody in absolutes. I am defending what I feel are defensible things but holding him accountable for roster construction.

I am not and did not say Dusty was going to fail. I said it was low odds. I also said it would take him time and we won’t give him time.

neither of those are absolute position. But if May is Phil Jackson to you guys… yeah. Can’t even try to argue that. Though I would take CHRIS Collins over May but not Phil

With the amount of Podcasts and Radio Shows and articles on May, I believe we'd give him time... Woodson is a black hole and we have no visibility into any of his strategy or thoughts, how he coaches in practice etc. I've read multiple articles and listened to multiple podcasts on how May approaches practice, how he gets his players to buy in and inspires the team.... I've not read or listened to one Woodson article on how he approaches anything strategically, if i'm wrong, please link the article... But the visibility and love of media for May would be a game changer for the fanbase...... No longer would we have to listen to Crean say "I have to check the tapes", Archie be a weirdo, or Woodson try to obfuscate what our eyes are telling us.... If May has a bad year, he could be on any number of podcasts or radio shows and tell us his strategy, and we'd put trust in that system....

I'm telling you May would turn the fanbase into his biggest asset where as Woody has done the oppostie.

Besides being an IU alum, I don’t know what all the hoopla is about for Dusty May.  As far as we know, he could be Archie Miller 2.0.  He made it to the FF but I’ve never heard of him until last year.  What has he exactly done prior to that?  He’s never coached at or ran a power 5 program.  Micheal Lewis is in his 2nd year at Ball State, and he could very well be just as good as Dusty May after year 3-5.  I would think there are better proven coaches that could be interested in the IU job with a solid NIL program.  Who knows, maybe Nate Oats would want to coach at a basketball school

We've gotten a taste of it... "I'm not going to sit here and answer that question from the fans or you (media)" and then no-showed for his radio program with the fans...

Read back through the last 20 pages. Multiple people have laid out the case pretty well.

If IU can get a Nate Oats, then sure. Seems like a tough pull.

Yeah, I’m not sold either on May. I mean, I could see it being great but it’s a huge step up in level for him.

I actually really like Woody the person. I really do. I think he cares deeply. I think he’s funny, and generally likeable. But his teams play including the first two years is just ugly and not up to par.

I just wish he wouldn’t have failed so epically this year because I could have lived with another 2 years similar to last year and been really happy and felt good about the program.

I know NGW says nobody wants this job, but I don’t agree. I think the AD Is fixated on May and they all want that to happen.

If he get May I’ll be a doubter to begin with, sadly. I’ll have some blind enthusiasm at least but I’ll be a doubter.

Reading it all back to back when you’ve been away for a while is an experience. It’s a bit, or there is a certain goateed coach hiding under the mask like a scooby doo villain.giphy.gif&key=8bfce59603115b8ca61193dc086b57cfaf2e5ad2909b8dd125f1fa87cb60d0d1

This makes me sad. Happy Woodson is a great sight. Sucks to see people fail and be unhappy.

You can find it hard to believe as much as you want. It is still true.

Woody told every guard recruit - you will have to come in and compete. We see a big roll for you but yes, I do have 2 seniors retuning.

If you don’t think coaches at successful programs lie or stretch truth, wow. They can and do all the time. Ledlum was a starter too until he got to practice and realized reality. The better programs can afford to do this. This isn’t just college BB. All college sports. “We are done reciting for this year. We see you as a starter year 1.” Then you watch multiple transfers come into your position.

Woody didn’t know to not be honest.

Big difference between "we see you as a starter" and you're "guaranteed" to start.  And with all due respect, neither you nor your insiders were privy to the actual conversations.  They reported what they "heard" which doesn't make it true.  So you really don't know what is "true" or not.

Stating the obvious -- that 2 seniors are returning -- is just that -- a simple fact.  As I said before, any player who can't look at that and say "I got these guys" may as well move on.  It's not like they are Alford.
