Not sure why anyone wants Chryst who was fired for running a football school into the ground, and if you want to make a controversial hire why would it be Fitzgerald over throwing as much money as possible at Gruden. The men's team since he made a hire has made the tournament both seasons - which is what the AD at IU will always be measured by; and his men's soccer program is in the elite 8 among other program successes. Dolson has his flaws and I certainly don't get warm and fuzzy with the idea that he's calling the shot on this football hire after that awful Allen extension, but his incompetence hasn't done all that bad Plus, women's volleyball, softball, and men's baseball are all thriving. Both swimming programs seem healthy, as well. Except for the elephant in the room (football), I really like where our athletic program is right now. thebigweave, mamasa and Class of '66 Old Fart 3 Quote

Leo Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Fitzgerald won 4 total games his last two seasons at Northwestern. His replacement this year took his 1-11 team and made them 7-5. He had two good seasons at Northwestern, one of them being the 2020 COVID season (sound familiar?) Tom Allen-coached Indiana beat his sorry NW team 34-3 in 2019.Even putting the off-the-field issues aside, you can put the “Fitzgerald is a good coach” argument to bed. Dolson’s interest in him in the first place is enough for me to know I wish anyone else was making the final decision on this hire. cybergates and go iu bb 2 Quote

It's freaking Wisconsin we're talking about here, not Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, etc. They don't have some incredible in-state talent pool to choose from that should make their AD or fans entitled to 10 win seasons. Chryst should never have been fired imo. Look at his record at UW: 2015: 10-3 2016: 11-3 2017: 13-1 2018: 8-5 2019: 10-4 2020: 4-3 (covid year) 2021: 9-4 2022: 2-3 Made a bowl game every year, and went 6-1 in those. Won the Orange and Cotton bowls. I understand that he may have some drawbacks, but I'm sorry, he's as close to a homerun hire that IU is going to get. Fitz took over in 2006. Northwestern made six bowl during that span. Fitz made 10 bowl games between 2006 and 2022. He won at least six games in 11 seasons. He had three 10 win seasons and two other 9 win seasons. He won 5 bowl games. Sure he fizzled out in his last four seasons, but he won at least six games in 10 of 12 years before his last four seasons. 9 bowl games in 12 years (IU has played 13 bowl games in our entire history). At freaking Northwestern. If you’re thumbing your nose at him, who would you be happy with? Dude would be a grand slam hire for IUFB. thebigweave 1 Quote

SameoldIU Posted November 27, 2023 Posted November 27, 2023 Why would IU want to even entertain Fitz? He was a mediocre coach at best playing in the awful west of the B1G and he has baggage. All of the allegations are pretty bad, even if they aren't true, there is enough "smoke" for other coaches to use it against him during recruiting. I'm pretty sure Tom Allen could have had the same success in the West. 9 winning seasons, and twice first in the West, one of which was a COVID year. So basically we'd be buying out a mediocre coach to get another mediocre coach with baggage At least Tom Allen was a stand up guy. 2006 Northwestern 4–8 2–6 T–8th 2007 Northwestern 6–6 3–5 T–7th 2008 Northwestern 9–4 5–3 T–4th L Alamo 2009 Northwestern 8–5 5–3 T–4th L Outback 2010 Northwestern 7–6 3–5 T–7th L TicketCity 2011 Northwestern 6–7 3–5 5th (Legends) L Meineke Car Care 2012 Northwestern 10–3 5–3 3rd (Legends) W Gator 16 17 2013 Northwestern 5–7 1–7 6th (Legends) 2014 Northwestern 5–7 3–5 6th (West) 2015 Northwestern 10–3 6–2 T–2nd (West) L Outback 22 23 2016 Northwestern 7–6 5–4 T–4th (West) W Pinstripe 2017 Northwestern 10–3 7–2 2nd (West) W Music City 17 17 2018 Northwestern 9–5 8–1 1st (West) W Holiday 19 21 2019 Northwestern 3–9 1–8 7th (West) 2020 Northwestern 7–2 6–1 1st (West) W Citrus 10 10 2021 Northwestern 3–9 1–8 T-6th (West) 2022 Northwestern 1–11 1–8 7th (West) Northwestern: 110–101 65–76 Total: 110–101 mamasa, go iu bb, Lebowski and 2 others 5 Quote
