He's 63.

He coaches the slowest offense in the league.

He's never recruited

He's never coached college basketball.

He never won as a head coach in the NBA.

He won coach of the month one time. 

Terrible hire.

What a huge disappointment but it’s what I’d expect for this administration. I’ll never stop cheering for IU or watching but this has become a bad joke and a sad commentary on the IU job if all we can attract is a guy with a career losing record in the NBA and not a day of college coaching experience.

Mildly disappointed, but I don’t hate the hire. He was a legit NBA head coach which is rare in college basketball. We’ll see who his assistants are, but it’s not about winning the press conference.

It’s one thing to hire Juwan Howard and have every basketball player in the country know who that is w/ recruiting, and it’s another to hire Mike Woodson.

I will support this team no matter what and think it’s possible that Woodson does well; but man is this disappointing given some of the other options I thought were possible.

I think that people saying recruits won’t know who Woodson is is overblown. They will know as soon as he is named coach. And Woody will be able to talk to recruits about how he has developed NBA players.

We will see. But I like putting Woodson up against Painter in developing relationships with recruits.

I'll get behind it. Not who I want but I don't know anything. My issues are two things:

1) Can he recruit?

2) If he wasn't an IU grad, would he even be considered? 

I think we all know the answer to question 2. Let's let it all play out. I'm not thrilled but I'll give him a chance. I hope he has a good staff AND they hit the ground running.

@Stuhoo shared an interesting video of a Mike Woodson practice the other day. It was only a few minutes long but it made me hate the idea less than I was hating it at the time. I still don't love it. I think it's an enormous risk for IU. 

Here are some cons: He's older - just turned 63. He's never coached at any level in college, and he's never recruited in his life. His record as a head coach in the NBA is pretty underwhelming. 

Here are some pros: 25+ years of coaching experience in the NBA. His players speak highly of him. He's a black man from Indianapolis who will be able to relate to players on a level a guy like Beilein never would be able to relate to them on. He loves IU, so he's taking the job because he wants it, not because it's a pay raise or a step up from what he had before (though it's both of those things too). He is able to get on his players without screaming in their faces. 

My initial reaction when I saw Woodson emerge as a candidate last week was WTF. After letting it sit in for a week, I'm still not excited if I'm being completely honest. But, we tried something new and maybe it'll pay off.

This place is funnier than Saturday Night Live.  An hour ago, it was all moaners and groaners that Moser would be our coach.  Now it looks like it's Woody and it's a different set of moaners and groaners.  If it were going to be Oats, Muss, etc., each one would have its own set of moaners and groaners.  Other than Stevens, there was not going to be a candidate that would be acceptable to the majority.   If it is indeed Woody, let's see who he selects for assistants, let's see how our current roster of players in the portal responds, let's at least see what next year's team looks like on the court.  The rush to judgment by some of you is amazing.
