I’ve been clear that I don’t have Stevens high on my list. If he is going to be the coach I would like to see a veteran staff around him that has been in the college game, the current game and landscape.
it’s not an agenda. I want to win and I think there are safer options out there to achieve that. I think he is a gamble and we don’t need to gamble. Adding people like Cody is gambling even more given he has zero experience coaching or as a GM.

Agreed. If they don't hire a seasoned college basketball GM this will be a disaster.

The current game--- Stevens played a huge role in creating the "current game".

We've found the first person that wouldn't like the Stevens hire.

The fact that he thinks 21 wins is a good benchmark is alarming because 40 years ago that WAS the standard of a good season (successful coaches/programs were often measured by the number of 20+ win seasons over a period of time). But scheduling has changed since then, teams play more games now than ever, and conference tournaments give even more opportunities to win games. The 20-win benchmark hasn't been relevant in about 25 years.

Just another data point to demonstrate how out of touch he really is.

He also referenced their RPI and Sagarin ranking the last 3 yrs.  Well at least  I think he did.

Please, troll better

You serious? Someone posted that the nba was closer to the college game then ever before: I agree in some ways but that same rational was used to hire Woodson and all of these other former nba guys and it hasn’t panned out in most cases.

troll better?

You didn’t, there are plenty of people that don’t have Stevens at the top of their list. It’s ok to:) and don’t spin it to “wouldn’t like”. It’s  all a matter of preference and why we are here - to discuss the ins and outs of this next hire.

a guy like Pearl for example would be a safer bet in my opinion. Clearly you feel different and that is ok too.

I’m one of them. If we want to dream about somebody who isn’t coming, dream about Bruce Pearl or Nate Oats. Those two clear Stevens today easily.

For reference and I hope you folks know that the “show” at 4pm is a between game show to kill 30 minutes. Please don’t go down this road. This is aimed at truthers only.

I didnt spin a thing. Stevens isn't high on your list, your words.

A guy like Pearl... is less realistic than BS, imo. Soooo? ... hes lower on my list than BS. :)

How is Pearl less realistic than Stevens, who has turned the job down now at least twice? Pearl is a sitting head coach at the collegiate level and a college basketball lifer. Stevens is the sitting President of the Celtics who hasn’t coached collegiately in over a decade.

I actually don't get the take that Stevens is not a safe choice to win at IU with whatever staff he wants. Woodson was an NBA guy, but was never known as an Xs and Os savant; Stevens was literally considered one of the best tactical coaches in the NBA. The choice for best tactical coach in college basketball would immediately be between him and Pitino. Would be happy to eat crow, but I would go so far as to say Stevens is not a gamble at all.

I think I would be hard pressed not to have Hurley on that list and possibly ahead of the two listed.

Has there been a Brad Stevens example of someone being a successful collegiate coach, then spending time in the NBA only to come back to college and fail?

Not many. I wanted to say Montgomery or (Pink) Floyd. But after reexamining their records it really wasn’t that bad, and you could argue almost all of the ones that didn’t reach their former heights was the result of them taking worse jobs. There was a time I wanted IU to throw a brinks truck at Montgomery and was shocked he left for the pros.

Bottom line: if you’ve proved you were a good coach in the college game a stint in the pros doesn’t magically make that go away. Stevens would kill it here and if you’ve proved gave truth serum to all the P5 ADs in the country all but UConn (and maybe Kansas and Baylor) would probably admit they’d jettisoned their current coach for Stevens. But that’s also the reason he isn’t coming to IU: he can go nearly anywhere including staying at his current, very coveted job.

Pearl is coaching the #1 team in the country, thats how. I understand all of Brad Stevens details.

There’s still a better chance of hiring somebody who wants to coach college basketball vs somebody who has zero interest.
