I didn't really buy the idea that May went to Michigan while waiting for IU. If he was waiting for IU he could've stayed at FAU for another year.

IU missed the boat because they insist on giving bad coaches too long.

For sure.

Because the leadership of IU very apparently has an issue with their culture/processes, etc.

Because Quinn Buckner is corrupt. Because Woodson is a deluded egomaniac with rich donor friends.

Because Dolson kowtow'ed to the powers that be, probably in the name of self-preservation.

Too many people in positions of power looking out for themselves and not the university or basketball program.

Sure feels like they need to get this hire right or risk the apathy growing/becoming permanent. Football school?

lol… I love how they list the Texas “elite” status up until he was fired for allegations of drunken domestic violence. That is NOT elite.

Yea, he coached a whole 8 games before being fired.

Either way, there’s good news for Beard fans: given IU’s history there’s a good chance the job will be open again in 4 years. At that time, Beard will have had about 6 seasons to rehabilitate himself and prove to people his problems were a fluke. IU could hire him then, as I suspect that time frame will give people more comfort than what is basically a season and a half at this point.

In fairness he may be elite in that category... not sure how many other active coaches can match his record on that...

At 62 with a bad heart this place would put him in the grave.

Self is an elite coach but with his age and health concerns I don't know.

That said the dude wins at an elite level. I don't hate the idea. But I seriously doubt he's someone that's on Dolson's radar at the moment. Seems like Scott has things narrowed down right now and won't deviate unless something significant changes.

Despite being asked often (or never), I haven't opined much on our coaching search.

That's because frankly, I have no clue who might succeed here.

Like most -- I'd be 100% on board with Stevens (long, long, long, long shot) or Dusty (long shot).

I'll get accused (correctly) of recency bias after last night's brutal takedown of O$U in Columbus, but the more I think about it, I could really get behind a Chris Collins hire. He's not my top choice -- but I'd have no complaints.

Granted, his record at NW isn't exactly stellar, but give him better NIL and significantly easier admission standards, and I think he'd do really well. He's smart -- that Duke education, you know -- and wouldn't have any issues with the "fishbowl" that is IU. I don't know if we have an interest, but I would think he might -- he can't win a natty at NW; he could in Bloomington.

He's 50 on the button, so he should be good to go for at least 10 more years if he works out.

I'm of the opinion that Dusty will take the job so I don't think it will get past Dusty...but if for some reason it does, pending background check, I'm on the Beard train. You cannot go from Option A/B to option F. Beard will win at Indiana.

A championship winning coach in Pitino says that’s our guy and would have us in the top 5 every year competing for championships. This after spending time with him. Beard wants the job. After May says no, he’s our guy.

Could be true, but from the Michigan fans I know, they'd tell you that the track record of Sam Webb (if that's who it is) is spotty at best.

Chris Salas or something like that.

Pat has told the story a few times that he had to bail him out of jail a couple times. If you know Pat that’s saying something.

My roommate, a redneck from Tipton, that made it one year at IU, used to hang out with Pat Knight almost nightly in 1987-88. They were something.

As someone who went to the bars with him a few times when he was an assistant and I was a student it was pretty wild. Fun times.

I have appointments available next week if you need an eye exam.

A drunk that gets into biting matches with his girlfriend that continues to binge drink in campus bars. We could have never seen it coming is kinda weak.

I'd be much more willing to entertain the idea if he quit drinking for 5+ years and committed to doing speaking engagements about the dangers of binge drinking / violence against anybody. Even if he lived a very visibly different lifestyle in the public for years, people would still have doubts IMO. All it takes is one night falling off the wagon. Doesn't look like he's changing his ways so I'd say he hasn't earned the chance to be IU's head coach until he does. Especially since he already got a second chance to be a D1 HC at Ole Miss.

As it stands today, I think he'd be a hire with a good amount of upside and a very decent chance of something going terribly wrong. A similar tenure to Sampson's would be crushing. In the worst case scenario, the headlines would be absolutely explosive.

We can find other HCs this cycle capable of winning big without the same risk. If Dolson hires him, I'll just have to trust he's confident that it won't happen again. But since UT fired him for cause and we already apparently passed on him after doing due diligence, I don't see it happening. IMO people would do well to warm up to some of the less sexy names on the list. There are enough very good/great coaches not named Brad Stevens/Dusty May/Chris Beard that I have to believe we can find and hire one of them.
