The point is just it isn't an absolutely perfect analogy. There are also differences that run in the other direction. Harbaugh hadn't won a Super Bowl when he went back, while Stevens has won an NBA Championship, which favors us.

Question for someone that knows but when trying to interview an NBA person do you have to get permission from the organization or owner before interviewing the candidate? Just wondering since Brad is the President do we need to ask someone for a formal interview?

If said program were to be able to interview an NBA President, hopefully they would do it with a HUGE bag of cash sitting on the table and plenty of YouTube videos from Indianas heyday to motivate and spark emotions!

I think if it’s outside the NBA, they don’t need permission. For example, Buck’s GM Horst was requested by the Pistons to be their GM and the Bucks immediately denied the interview last season.

Plenty of guys on IU's roster could be winning players in a different environment. Myles Rice already showed it last season.

For example, Mackenzie Mgbako is not my favorite player on this roster. I find him incredibly frustrating. But it's easy to imagine him contributing to a winner under a different coach who makes him guard 4s, and doesn't tolerate poor effort or jacking contested 17 footers.

Technically, we'd probably want to permission just to ensure the Celtics didn't sue for contractual interference. But as a practical matter, I can't see them doing that, so I doubt it would matter.

Edit: But that would probably apply more to a finalized contract phase. We wouldn't be tampering just by engaging in preliminary talks, since that's just an NBA rule.

Kind of sounds like Izzo who has won big in the big ten. I don't know if the ones complaining about how coaches act is to young to remember how coaches use to be. Go watch clips of coaches like Rollie Masimino, Lou Carnesacca, Bob Knight, Gene Keady, Jud Heathcote to just to name a few. What we see today from coaches is tame compared to these coaches

I agree.  Make your offer to the top guys and don't worry if they say no.  I don't understand why schools panic when their first couple of coaches they pursue say no.

SEC is grind and is trending as the best college basketball conference.  The B1G is clearly number 2.   If I’m a high level sitting coach I would look for a job opening in the B1G.  One that is at the top of the Nil food chain in the whole conference and probably top 5 nationally would look really appealing to me.   While the B1G is a great conference no school or coach currently scare you.  Easier to move up the ladder  in the conference in the B1G compared to the SEC.   Ius opening will be very appealing to a lot of great coaches
