Cronin would not justify the buyout required. He is not nearly that good. The other two would be great though, but he thinks it's gonna be Cronin, which I have a problem with.

Tyme is known for 2 things: Drama and supporting Woody. There's no reason to trust anything he says related to the administration or hiring a new coach IMO. All 3 of those names are "fine" and we're not going for "fine".

I sincerely hope he's full if it. The least disappointing name on that list is Cronin and he's not worth the 16m to buyout his contract.

That list ranges from "disappointing" to "we'll probably be looking again in a few years".

I'm on record for saying I'll be excited with any decent coach we hire, but Cronin would be a tough one for me to get excited about. He is a good coach, and is definitely an upgrade over Woodson. I followed him closely when he was at UC because I lived in the area and had several family members who were Bearcat fans. The fan base never really cared for him or appreciated him (hence the reason he left for UCLA). He always had decent regular seasons but never did much in the tournament(1 sweet sixteen Appearance at UC in 13 years). And the only deep tournament run he had was year two at UCLA.  

It's definitely an upgrade, but I hope it doesn't fall that far.

As for what I thought was a prohibitive buyout for Cronin, there’s this nugget from an article during last year’s UL coaching search:

“he’s owed a whopping $20 million if his deal is broken before Mar. 30, and $16 million before Mar. 31, 2025. However, there are rumors that his buyout could drop to zero because of a loophole in his contract.”

Agreed. He’s nowhere near my first choice, but he’s far better and proven than anyone we’ve had since Sampson. You could argue whether he’s better than Crean I suppose.

Finally, I find it interesting that @JerryYeagley23 (who I VERY MUCH appreciate) has consistently stated that Dolson “has his guy,” but has yet to clearly state just who that guy is.

Excellent point. When you remove the Knight connection, Beard doesn't look nearly as attractive.

I've never understood the amount of love that Beard gets. Good coach but not a home run as some think.

I still don't think he's that good. That final 4 run was a miracle run as an 11 seed. Otherwise it's been low ceiling with early upsets galore. Plus, we would get tired of him with his antics. Couple all of that with a buyout in the same range as Nate Oats and TJ Oztelberger, that would be a terrible hire in my opinion.

Given the timing of all this, best guess is Stevens. As @Chris007 mentioned, if they did this now and were targeting a current college coach, those schools would scramble to amend those coaches contracts.

I have a different reaction. My reaction is that Beard has an extraordinarily fantastic record as a coach, but that Cronin’s record is severely underrated.
