IU brass is coming around to the idea of Chris Beard in Bloomington. Lots of conversations by his agents behind the scenes this past weekend, trying to prove that he is a new man. Not a done deal, but it’s trending toward at least a possibility.

Don’t shoot the messenger!

Sharing this not to prove I'm an insider, but to reiterate that this has been in motion for over a week. Still not sure it gets done, but there are signs and "leaks" leading to it as a real possibility. Character questions aside, what's everyones thoughts on his coaching abilities?

Brownell is the safe boring pick.

Hiring a guy with just three top 25 teams in 23 years as a D1 head coach - and zero top 15 teams - over a sky-high-upside candidate like McCollum, simply because it feels “safer,” would be so ****** stupid.

He’s a phenomenal coach and an A+ hire from a basketball perspective. He is also very much not the guy I’d prefer to be the face of the school.

We’ve added 15 pages in the last hour. That Goodman tweet is having the intended effect.

Is it odd to anyone else that he tweets that and then immediately starts stumping for Beard? Not trying to be a conspiracy theorist, nor am I against hiring Beard, just seems strange.

It’s his 3rd endorsement in the last 2 weeks

Listen…I’m not pro Brownell. I agree, it would be an incredibly underwhelming hire. At this point in the process I want Beard. Im just saying what I think the media would say.

From a tactical standpoint, I don’t think his X’s and O’s are any better than someone like Cronin or Brownell who are potential candidates this board are completely out on. But his teams are tough, hard-nosed, and play good defense.

With Beard, assuming he can keep his nose clean, he’d make the tournament most years but think you’d see a wide variance in conference finishes on a year to year basis. He’s barely over .500 in-conference at the P5 level.

Defense first. Teams play hard and smart. Offense can be a challenge. History of building programs and winning immediately. Built TX Tech with transfers (juco, etc), before there was a transfer portal.

Boring? Yes.

Safe? I'm not so sure about that. He's been pretty blah most of his time at Clemson. It's a risk to assume he'd do better at IU.

I don’t disagree. Just relaying what the pundits would say to try and turn it into a positive

We’ve given the last two guys four years. But, like a few players on the current roster, the last two coaches have proven to be woefully overmatched in the Big Ten.

Now more than ever turnarounds can happen in a year or two. This doesn’t mean a final four or even sweet 16 by year two.
Our fanbase and brass is smart enough to see whether the team’s quality of play/style is trending upward over time. If it is, we reward that staff with unlimited support, financial resources, and a packed SSAH.

The fanbase is the best thing about this program, and we’re not unreasonable in our expectations.

He isn’t even the safe pick. Hes been to fewer tournaments than IU over the past 15 years. Hes the “we’ve given up on trying” pick. Cronin is the safe, boring pick.

That’s fair.
