    NFL Draft

I’d forgotten we even had this thread, but, hey, IU being a football school now and all, seems like the day to bump it. Media consensus seems to be: Day 1: Mendoza, Cooper Jr Day 2: Ponds, Sarratt Day 3: Fisher, Black, Nowakowski, Coogan, Kamara, Hemby, Moore That sound about right? Thoughts?

  4. First thing on the news this morning... IU Football Helmut on the big screen...IU Football Heisman Trophy Winner Quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the top selection in tonight's NFL draft! It sure is wonderful to have my IU National Champions in Football banner outside among all of these aging OSU banners. Neighbors in back see my stained-glass IU suncatcher...and they are from Ft. Wayne. We want another one, just like the other one!

I seriously, seriously, doubt it happens but I’m gonna spend tonight waiting for the last 5 picks or so to see if any GM has the combination of stones and good sense to take Ponds in Rd 1. That kid’s gonna play a decade and be a no doubt winning player.

  7. Thought we'd put a separate thread in play for tonight's spring game. Key 'first look' points of interest for me? Tyler Cherry as the QB2 With Becker out (hamstring) who is the WR5 that bumps into a rotation role - Chandler, Bond, or Kendrick. Third LB Fourth DT behind Tyrique, Mario, and Hjelle. With two starting OL out (Smith and Lynch) who are the backups who start. Great to see this train back in motion and ready to run over any and all.

Honestly, I thought he would be more expensive.

  9. Thats the debate. Doesn’t feel that way to me, but we won’t know until it happens. PS- it’s 8-10 for me. I don’t personally love our Starting SG spot but that’s a me thing. I could see where our 2 and 3 spots both end up weaknesses. Or maybe strengths. I’d like to see a 2-3 that could push to play/start. And an atlhletic 5 with potential.

  10. 100% this. This was going to be my reply. Then on top of this, nothing should be given and everything earned. I can guarentee Waglers impact wasn’t known or projected. Maybe he was slotted 10th or 12th on that roster. He ended up 1. Even on our team, our backups at the 1 and 5 ended up being the more consistent players in the season. Stack talent. Take chances on 11-13. (Mid majors, Foreign, etc). But get the best talent you can get. Let the summer decide the players. Play the best not the highest paid. But packing it in for practice players in 3 scholarship spots is a mistake. I DO think we get at least 1 more guy that might play.

  11. Broadly agree. Except, I don't think it's completely accurate to describe what needs filled as the 11th, 12th and 13th roster spot solely because of the chronological order they're being added in. Personally I think "spot 11" is Manhertz. We need to add at practice player types for 12 and 13. Spot 10 is probably Karvala IMO. I do not expect to see much of him in conference play. People expect PAM to get rotation minutes in the back of an 8 or or 9 man rotation. So IMO we need a big to fill those back of the rotation minutes not just round out the roster and warm the bench.

  12. REMINDER: BTN will air 60 min. of IUFB vs Oregon at 6:00 followed by 60 min. of IUFB vs O$U at 7:00. At 8:00 it will be live from Bloomington for the spring game scheduled for 90 min. Coverage of the NFL draft starts at 8:00 on both ESPN and ABC-TV.

  14. Man, I really appreciate Carr coming back to IU to work with IUBB and hopefully help us get good again. Not all our former managers are willing to.

  15. Agree he is a good coach so my Tom Allen reference wasn’t the best ( ie other teams would hire DeBoer as a HC while that wasn’t the case with Allen). I like DeBoer, and think he is a very good proven head coach, but think he is a poor fit and there will be a buyout out some point (not after this season). Bama’s Saban days of stacking three deep 5 stars, and having the advantage of gobs of illegal under the table money, are long gone.

Come on, Scott/DDV/Ryan, y’all need to take advantage of this. Montreal, Toronto, hell, go back to San Juan. I have no summer vacation plans this year.

  19. At last weekend's UAA event, Chase, not surprisingly, was named to the weekend's 1st team. He was also named to the event's All-Defense team. Stats for the weekend: 15.8 PPG, 1.8 RPG, 2.0 APG, 2.3 SPG

  20. With the way the team is built, he’d better be comfortable running different stuff than last year. I think for all the issues last year, Xs and Os versatility won’t be a problem this season. Everyone says CDD is a great Xs and Os guy. We might just be a defensive juggernaut with a a slightly above average-ish offense—although one that can get crunch time buckets thanks to guys like Burton. I’d love another 3 and D type guy, but you have to think the staff has scouted Lyndsey and Harris to be our primary spot up shooters with Burton and Sherrell adding enough from the arc to satisfy what CDD wants to do. The 3 freshman sit out there as potential X factors too.

Those were the days. They’d print them in the Indy Star by round and there were a billion names and I’d comb that thing looking for every player I knew. Today, the very thought of it gives me a migraine.

100% Looks like Mendoza, Ponds, Cooper, Coogan, Fisher, Sarratt, Black for sure, and reasonably likely Hemby, Moore. That's nine. The record for IU is seven.

  24. Seems dumb to try to push this through for the upcoming sports (basketball, football) year. Since I imagine it won’t negate deals for players who’ve done more than 5 years, just add people. Vote on it now but have it take effect Jan 1, 2027
    2 points
  25. He has $15k added to his bonus every year along with an Adidas gear with a automobile provided by the school. Bloomington has to be a cheaper to live in or around than Indy, so that money can go a long way. "His deal will also hand Carr a retention bonus each season, beginning with a $50,000 payment provided Carr is still employed on April 30, 2027. That bonus will increase by $15,000 each year Carr remains employed on that date, with the increase built into those automatic one-year extensions as well. So, Carr will receive a $65,000 retention bonus in 2028, an $80,000 bonus in 2029 and so on."

  26. Raby mentioned on-field drills scheduled for 7:45. Kickoff for a single half of football set for 8:10. No tackling of QBs.

  27. I'm pretty sure 2026 is in the mid-30's. I'd guess we're right on the edge of the top-10. Pretty nuts. I think there are 20 or 25 schools spending pretty big, like the $30-40M range, so I think about as we're spending at a very competitive level. Beyond that, no idea, but whatever it is, it kept Cig around.
    2 points
  28. Highly doubt that, unless Cig has advance notice that the 1st pick will be at exactly 8:05. Ain't no way Cig has a listed 8:00 start time on his schedule, but waits until whenever the talking heads decide it is time for an event related to 'not this year'. More likely to me that they start the game and then show Fernando being picked during a timeout.

  29. I’d be shocked if we’re not shaking this bush pretty hard. It may amount to nothing, but there a probably a couple good Euros out there who are on the fence about making the jump to America or not.

  30. Gavin Sykes to TCU. He was the sharp shooting wing I was hoping for. All the portal targets on Coach Adragna's portal tracker have gone elsewhere. Looks like all that's left are the potential over production guys which is ok for a couple but would like at least one to compete for rotation minutes. Maybe we get a Euro surprise.

  31. It’s not her O it’s her D, USC’s defensive centerpiece, doubt 7-8th, seems more likely she’s the backup point

  32. Kinda funny how some seem to think there are impact players just waiting to sign with IU to fill the 11th, 12th, and 13th roster spot and take what little NIL is left. It's willfully ignorant of the fact that guys aren't entering the portal to just wear the candy stripes and are actually looking to maximize exposure, PT, and $$$. I can guarantee the last three gets will be guys with potential but also with warts. I can also guarantee a certain amount of undeserved outrage about the last guy on the bench that will only see pt against the likes of Delaware St with 1:13 left in the game.

  33. Yea. In this case I mostly got that from Cig himself when he said this in April ‘25: “I think our little pot of gold is pretty nice, but we're not at $40 million. Or $30 million. Or even $25 million." https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/the-race-to-keep-up-with-40-million-rosters-is-shaking-college-football/ I took that to mean low 20’s which I heard from a few other people. Unfortunately for some who want to explain away IUFB as buying a team or being really old… it just ain’t so. It was simply incredible coaching.

  34. Whenever I see comments like "we had to get a GM", it reminds me of all the old heads saying things like "well, Bobby didn't need someone to bring in players for him." I'm actually kind of impressed we got on the GM bandwagon as fast as we did, because for years that's been the kind of thing we have to watch everyone else have success with before we even consider it.

  35. I’m old enough to remember when people freaked out because we were signing Adam Olsen and it was proof that our staff were morons and they were gonna fill our team with mid major players again. Speculation is indeed fun but not worth getting worked up over. Choose optimism with the portal!
