  1. The “IU social media industry” including Rabby has no clue who IU is currently shooting for, there’s really no basis on which to form an opinion at this point, other than what staff has actually done, which speaks for itself, pretty strongly

  2. ....It's funny how some posters seem to "know" privileged information, like how much NIL $ we actually started with and how much we currently have left. GM Carr's "No Leak" policy covers a broad scope. I wouldn't be surprised if Coach DeVries and Carr already know who they want.

  3. Somehow you manage to spin getting Sherrell into a 3rd choice overpay. Bravo!

  4. I’m old enough to remember when people freaked out because we were signing Adam Olsen and it was proof that our staff were morons and they were gonna fill our team with mid major players again. Speculation is indeed fun but not worth getting worked up over. Choose optimism with the portal!

  5. We also suffer from Battered Woody Syndrome because 99% of the time, things on the inside aren't adversarial to the point that this would even be a consideration. Under Woody, it felt like they might have been.

  6. Might be 1 worth keeping an eye on. The staff reached out to him last year before he committed on his Auburn visit. Missed most of last year due to injury so would probably have 3 years.

  7. So he built a mediocre roster on the quick last year, and took necessary steps to get better and build an excellent roster this year? Seems like a mature, effective, grown-@$$ man move to me.

  8. CDD is still in charge of the roster. Ryan is part of the IUBB staff and reports to CDD. Every CBB coach relies heavily on their staff for recruiting. CDD hired a guy to improve and round out his staff. Pretty standard stuff.

  9. Broadly agree. Except, I don't think it's completely accurate to describe what needs filled as the 11th, 12th and 13th roster spot solely because of the chronological order they're being added in. Personally I think "spot 11" is Manhertz. We need to add at practice player types for 12 and 13. Spot 10 is probably Karvala IMO. I do not expect to see much of him in conference play. People expect PAM to get rotation minutes in the back of an 8 or or 9 man rotation. So IMO we need a big to fill those back of the rotation minutes not just round out the roster and warm the bench.

  10. We might be better in the front-court having Samet and Sherrell for 7 million compared to Bidunga (5m) and X for the same total price. Also, pass on Haralson for whatever high amount he commanded. That money, # of shots was better spent on Burton. We still spent huge $. They chose how to allocate it for a complete team. Players also choose where they go when the money is close enough.

  11. @Demo figure you'll love this guy... 8, 9 years in college? And not a doctor of some sort by now? If granted, he'd be playing against kids who were in 5th grade when his college career started. Lol

  13. Kinda funny how some seem to think there are impact players just waiting to sign with IU to fill the 11th, 12th, and 13th roster spot and take what little NIL is left. It's willfully ignorant of the fact that guys aren't entering the portal to just wear the candy stripes and are actually looking to maximize exposure, PT, and $$$. I can guarantee the last three gets will be guys with potential but also with warts. I can also guarantee a certain amount of undeserved outrage about the last guy on the bench that will only see pt against the likes of Delaware St with 1:13 left in the game.

  16. Ha. I don’t think there is anything surprising. The plan was always to hire a GM. It would be great to do that the day after CDD was hired, but it’s reasonable to see how such a big hire isn’t possible in such a short time. CDD worked on Carr for months before he joined, he wanted him on the staff. At the end of the day all these recruits look at the head coach who has to close them. It’s still the head coach’s call and he’s responsible for the results. There is plenty to criticize and be concerned about 13 months in, but hiring a GM doesn’t seem like one to me.

  17. My brother, you really don't change, do you? You were saying we appeared to be aiming low a couple weeks ago, and then we landed 6 P5 transfers a few days later. You can't go by reported interest on Twitter, my man. Have some faith!

  18. Ok, no one is gonna care about this one but me. Pearson went to HS about 10 mins from me. Pulled the Race Thompson and classed up to redshirt. Fully 6’11” and can really run and change directions. Springy and quick off the floor. Flashes everything you want. The question there was whether he’d ever get strong enough and I’d be curious to assess where he is physically because he could be a serious long term buy low steal for someone.

  20. UConn has like 6 or 7 spots to fill still. Just saying, the portal only closed yesterday, most teams aren't done yet building their roster for next year and many won't be until mid/late summer.

  23. What I’d love to hear is Carr comparing this job to the Pacers’ job. This is miles harder. Schools that didn’t go out and find a Dude for that role, hello Mark Pope, are getting slaughtered and it’s going to get nothing but worse.

  25. This is football related but is super relevant to our current position in the portal and spending on impact players for these last two spots. I do believe we got the starters right, but this is why we are going to have to go diamond in the rough hunting for these last 2-3 spots.

  26. ^^ Aren't these posts better off in the roster thread? Just trying to keep up with actual portal with IU interest stuff here --

  27. Yea. In this case I mostly got that from Cig himself when he said this in April ‘25: “I think our little pot of gold is pretty nice, but we're not at $40 million. Or $30 million. Or even $25 million." https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/the-race-to-keep-up-with-40-million-rosters-is-shaking-college-football/ I took that to mean low 20’s which I heard from a few other people. Unfortunately for some who want to explain away IUFB as buying a team or being really old… it just ain’t so. It was simply incredible coaching.

  29. Whenever I see comments like "we had to get a GM", it reminds me of all the old heads saying things like "well, Bobby didn't need someone to bring in players for him." I'm actually kind of impressed we got on the GM bandwagon as fast as we did, because for years that's been the kind of thing we have to watch everyone else have success with before we even consider it.

  30. Sherrell > Bidunga. Sherrell is far more skilled, and if I had to choose every time, I’m taking Sherrell without hesitation. Haralson is athletic, but not a strong shooter. I’d rather have Darren Harris and Lindsay—both proven shooters who’ve played on NCAA Tournament teams. Burton is an elite in-state guard. Instead of chasing someone like Juke, who’s unlikely, it makes more sense to prioritize a former Mr. Indiana Basketball and one of the top guards in the portal. He’s a great fit for our system.

  32. I think Carr has a lot of influence with everyone. I also think if we flop and it’s clearly on CDD, Scott will try to keep Carr and marry him up to the next guy. But, like you said I still think CDD has the final call on all things IUBB. Like Carr can’t force a player on to the roster. Regardless, this portal seemed to go pretty well. The money helped too. Time will tell…

  33. I agree everyone will have their own opinions on this. I think boiling it down to the contract language is a bit of an oversimplification though. IU basketball has an 8 figure player payroll, a big operating budget, and a ton of support staff to go with it. It's a pretty complex organization. In that type of setting there are direct lines of reporting and "dotted" lines of reporting. Not disputing that Carr is a direct report to DDV as the head coach. DDV is accountable for the roster and the team performance at the end of the day. He deserves the blame and the credit that goes with it. That being said, Carr definitely seems like an IU hire (Dolson-driven) rather than a DDV driven hire. Nothing wrong with that at all, just makes it easy to speculate that he has a dotted line of reporting to Dolson and maybe has more authority over the process for talent acquisition than one would expect the typical college GM to. We could be entering a world where GMs outlast coaches in CBB. It's still very early days in the world of CBB programs having GMs so I don't think there's an "industry standard" to point to yet. I have to assume the HC has final say on player personnel. Ultimately we will have to judge based on the court, but the process off of it seems much improved this time around and I'm content to give credit to both Carr and DDV.

  44. I think most “GM’s” in college work like a glorified scout for the head coach and probably helps advise on the pool of money. Just a guess, but I think Carr operates on a more co-equal plane. I feel like you might be there too if you think Dolson would try and retain Carr if Devries left. That’s more or less how it works in the NBA. It’s a close working relationship where each have distinct roles but they kind of overlap. We can find situations in the NBA where the GM rules supreme and ones where the coach does. But in general they operate kind of as co-equals where NBA GMs aren’t making big signings without consulting the coach (and sometimes the star player) and coaches aren’t getting pissed and just benching highly sought after players (with influential agents) without consulting the front office. My impression is most of these college GMs are a direct report to the coach. Dusty May could fire his GM tomorrow and the AD wouldn’t have any involvement besides the paperwork. My impression is Devries couldn’t do that to Carr without express approval of Dolson. FWIW, I didn’t question why it took so long, but the timing of hire. If they were going to hire someone from the NBA it would seem the summer after the Finals would’ve been the logical time vs in the middle of the college and NBA season. The latter makes me think they didn’t get it done this summer, but as the season went south they had to do something to pry Carr away. I join you and everyone else in being happy it got done. I have posted before that I think this will be the trend of the future. There might be a couple highly successful HCs who feel they can keep dominion over both operations but at the pro level very few are successful at both.

  48. That is great in a perfect world, but foul trouble, fatigue & injury are certain. If Sherrell twists an ankle and is out for 3 games during conference play, who is playing center in your scenario when Samet picks up 2 quick fouls? I think a capable back-up center is still an absolute requirement for this roster.
