This has been my gripe for 20 years. In a zero sum game you need to be cut throat. IU always plays the nice guy that never gets the girl. In other words, you need to be willing to fire your current coach when the one you want becomes available, NOT when you think the loser you have has been treated fairly. IU is always playing by some unwritten set of Marquess of Queensberry rules (e.g. “everyone gets 4 years,” “let’s hire a minority candidate even if he is on probation,” etc…) while everybody else is playing a game of cutthroat.

  5. Good to hear. If he transfers, that would be a real bummer. First off, he was heavily recruited 4*. Trent could have got a restraining order on Matt Painter he recruited him so hard. But, he committed to IU. Specifically to IU, which is pretty rare. When he signed he knew there was a good chance Woody was going to be gone and his actual coach was unknown, yet he committed to IU. If we can't develop a dedicated actual Hoosier with 4* talent like Trent into some sort of meaningful contributor (not saying he needs to start) by his sophomore year, we're in trouble. We need four year players that form a program foundation and culture and also connect to the fans. If this staff can't do it with him, that's worrying.

  11. The hell they couldn't. Dump his s#!t in boxes and stack it next to the dumpster. Woodson was a loathsome individual on just about every level — petty, vindictive, arrogant and unqualified. But then, to quote Tom Crean, "It's Indiana".

Can’t do that when Woodson “stepped down on his own” They couldn’t really kick him out until his official last day for the optics of him stepping away instead of getting forced to which we all know he was forced. Woodson last FU to Indiana for making him step down. They definitely bent over backwards for the optics of his removal. Yes in an early interview DeVries mentioned he and Norton were working out of the players lounge and didn’t have access to the office yet

  14. Mike Wiemuth brought up a good point on the latest X's and Joes pod. Devries had prior connections with 2 of top assistants and recruiters in the country in Preston Murphy (Alabama) and Moikubu (sp?. Texas Tech). He went hard after those guys, both of which were apparently interested and still playing until losing in the elite 8, but ultimately ended up getting pay rises to stay at their current jobs. Imagine the outrage this fanbase would have if he hadnt pursued those 2 guys who he had connections with and both happen to be of the top assistants in the country. This upcoming season is definitely a put up or shut up season for Devries but I do think there were a lot of circumstances that didnt go his/IU's way last off season while assembling a staff and roster.

  15. ..... Cignetti is also big on preserving the culture of his program. He says he won’t budge when transfer prospects make demands. “When I have a guy and they want to be promised this or that, playing time, they’ve told me ‘I’m going to start,’ no, no. I’ve never done that and never would,” Cignetti said. “How could I possibly not lose the locker room if I’m promising guys that they will do this or they will do that? Everything’s earned.” ......it's so comforting knowing that we have a leader in Coach Cignetti who always sticks to his guns without hesitation. When any coach in any sport can get that rare type of respect followed by repeated, positive results,....it's thing of beauty!

  16. I get the issues are kind of tied together, but I think the bigger issue is the transfer portal and transfer policy. That's a bigger issue than NIL or players getting paid. The problem is that we essentially have free agency for every player every season. It's absolutely ridiculous when we have guys that have played 5 seasons at 4-5 different schools. That's the problem with college basketball. Way bigger negative for the sport than players getting paid. But again they're sort of tied together. Seems the only/best way to fix that is to have multi-year contracts or something?

  17. I think it's a net benefit. But a small one. + The athletic dept has leveled up financially. Football is the only sport that can turn a serious profit, and some of that can be used for IUBB. Also, NIL donations have exploded, and while most are for football, some are general donations where some small amount can be chipped off for IUBB. + Indiana's exposure is WAY WAY up. We're actually one of the biggest topics in college sports. While it's not for bball, it helps players hear about Indiana a lot. There is more awareness about IU, which can't hurt. Marketing 101. + Hard to quantify this one, but IUFB has set a standard. It's hard to make excuses. The model of how to do things is across the parking lot. But, since IUFB has got good, IUBB has not gotten any better. So this might be nothing in reality. - The negative for IUBB would be attention. IUBB butt in seat attendance has been declining for a while due to program performance, but IUFB has probably satisfied some fans demand for IU athletics. On average we've got something like another 10-12K fans going to home football games now, and for some that's a replacement of going to IUBB. Eyeballing it, it seems this season AH attendance was down about ~2K people on average (butt in seats, not tickets sold, ticket sold probably only down slightly). At the end of the day, healthy football means more financial resources and exposure that can only help IUBB. But I think it only helps a little bit. At any school, FB and MBB are pretty separate operations with little correlation in terms of results.

To me, it is truly astounding that our fan base still cares that much about our college basketball team. Never have so many cared so much about such a mid program. If we ever are a perennial top ten program again, look out.

  21. Syracuse should hire Gerry McNamara. He's not as accomplished as Dusty was, but it's a similar situation in that he's an alum and probably as good of a coach as they're likely to get.

  22. Scheyer is a good coach. His team is struggling but he wasn’t too proud to throw out a junk zone to switch it up. Completely changed the game. Most coaches would be too proud to do that in a 1/16 game.

Since he spent most of his career as an assistant, he better appreciate the importance of good assistants. I think the portal will go better this time around, but the lack of urgency in filling the staff feels like a very amateur-ish move from a P5 coach IMO. Even if their interest was real, he could've been lining up back up options. Drew Adams and Kenny after the portal started (?) just didn't inspire much confidence and the results were similarly lackluster. Hopefully the continuity helps + Clark now on staff for the portal, which he wasn't last year. I think he can show a lot of growth in Y2.

I don't think there would've been any outrage at all for him not pursuing those guys actually. I think there was way more outrage over the season we just had (which was in part because he swung and missed on his top assistant choices). The best ability is availability. I'd have thought the expectation between Dolson and DDV would be that he comes with his staff and hits the ground running. But things didn't work out that way. All we can do is move forward. Hopefully year 2 is much better in many different ways.

^^This^^ Doesn't mean he will succeed (or fail) at IU, but every little thing is relevant and this was part of the initial hand Devries was dealt.

  34. Making decisions quickly and decisively and not being a victim of escalation of commitment. 45 days to assemble a staff is ridiculous. Dolson should have been all over DeVries. I manage an onsite vendor at my job and if they aren’t filling open positions I’m asking them what’s the hold up. And obviously the retread of holding onto coaches clearly after they have hit lame duck status. Look at Cig he moves fast and doesn’t waste time. We won the rose bowl and signed the bulk of our class nucleus all in the same week. While preparing to obliterate Oregon at the same time. Our basketball program can’t seem to do anything quickly. Which might work if we were doing things well. But instead we get a mediocre effort 3 weeks late.

  35. What does the mean “DD can coach”? I mean technically I won a rec league championship with a killer triangle and 2. The prior coaches at IU “can coach”. The question is can DD coach AND build a program that is a consistent top 10 team. Heck, there is no evidence that he can build a top 30 team. Now, there is also not enough evidence that he sucks and definitely cannot do it. But there does seem to be question about either coaching or motivating players as he himself said he was having trouble getting his team to play his offense even if he is a better than average coach, despite no evidence, he also has to be able to build a team Big time questions here Well, he has his staff in place and Dolson has admitted that the portal Kids are often locked up before the portal opens which suggests we are reaching out too (or throwing in the towel). So you have staff, resources, a GM and seemingly a willingness to let them make early contact if we end up with a subpar class and season there is a primary reason DD is not the guy. Let’s hope we get early success in the portal. Otherwise I say you turn to someone who can turn this around fast and may only have 4-5 years left but always has success. Cig and BP on the AARP program but collecting wins

  36. I am a fan of the 5 to play 5 model. Once you are first listed on a college roster, the "clock" begins and despite injury, leave, or anything else, thats all you get. No age rule, as there would be so many exemptions it would get ridiculous. This would allow for religious mission and military service to work within the confines of the 5 year rule. Injured? That's why everyone gets a "grad year". Injured multiple times? Sorry to sound harsh, but thats life. They would still get paid well through NIL and (hopefully) get a degree.

  38. And the fans readily accepted that it would be a total rebuild, endured the 3 worst years in program history. They were willing to wait while he instilled his culture. Then Crean imploded. Then we wasted a lot of time between doofus #1 and doofus #2. The program was plenty stable under them. It just sucked and never got better. And fans still showed up. Being "hands off" won't help the program. The program is about the coach. No it isn't. Indiana's problem is hiring bad basketball coaches. Wanna know how I know? Kelvin Sampson. We were on a great basketball trajectory with him because he can coach (he had to go for other reasons). People really try to force a square peg in a round hole with the lessons they derive from Cig and IUFB IMO. Fans have no real influence on the culture coaches build inside the locker room. That's why Cig succeeded... not because he was allowed space to breathe, which the basketball coach in Bloomington is not afforded. Whether DDV succeeds or fails here, the fans will have nothing to do with it.
