Xavier’s insider doesn’t expect him to end up at Xavier and said strong IU vibes

....does anybody else get the sneeky feeling that Coach DeVries and the players he brought in are going to suprise a lot of people in a positive way? I sort of get the feeling of "under the radar" and "sleeper". It definitely happened with IU Football. NO ONE gave Coach Cignetti and IU Football a prayer and now look where we are. I see posters on here complaining about DeVries recruiting and it just baffles me.

Top ten team for the second straight year. Head coach complete long-term continuity now cemented. TONS of social media/sports media mega-buzz. Plenty enough money to get the job done. A two year-now established record of talent development. Tons of 'really high-end/above and beyond anything imaginable' talent appearing on campus for committable visits. Feels like the dam is about to burst boys, and over the next few months (and thereafter) we're about to get get committments from talent the likes of which IUFB has never seen before. Good times and then some.

Literally the DAY AFTER the NCAA announces that college athletes and coaches can bet on pro sports. This is gonna go really, really well.

I’m still optimistic for several reasons: 1) He wanted this job, the process with him started months before his hire. So he’s had a vision for what he can do here for some time. Scott hired him, and I’ve been very impressed with Scott. 2) A few people who have worked with him, both in the AD and external on the NIL front (so not IU fans), told me they are very impressed. 3) I generally like his staff. Notably Bargen. 4) He seems to be bringing in high character guys. 5) I just get the sense he knows what he’s doing and is going through his process of building a team and program from wreckage Woody left him. He won’t generate much buzz from the media — he doesn’t hobnob much with them. Maybe the roster concerns are valid, maybe not, we’ve got to see what he can get from these guys. I get we didn’t land some HS recruits, but on the other hand we haven’t played a game and the recruiting cycle isn’t over. I hesitate to critique the sausage making process when it’s early and I have little insight into what is actually going on behind the scenes on that front. We’ll see. I think we’ll have ups and downs, but overall I’d guess CDD outperforms the bubble projections and makes the tourney without much drama and builds from there. That would be great. That’s my view until any red flags appear that suggest he can’t succeed here. Red flag examples are getting blown out by Indiana St. at home, being an NBA guy new to college bball, or clear losing trends on the court or recruiting. Pretty basic red flags. All we can do is hope for the best. May as well. It’s out of our control.

I'm largely in this camp/line of thought at this point, and would add: 4. DeVries has a track record of rebuilding teams into competitive teams. 5. Not just a a proven defensive coach, the guy is a demonstrated and recognized basketball mind -- we haven't had that here since Sampson. He's not another Crean, and he's miles better as an overall bball coach than Woodson or Miller. We have a legit bball coach -- and that goes to the Cig comparisons.

Yes; I very much get that feeling. I haven't said it in so many words because it sucks to eat the words after doing so, but I do get the feeling that this IUBB squad's potential is being notably underrated. There are three primary reasons for real optimism: Each and every one of our top six players are seniors. Coachable, mature, D1-experienced seniors. Devries is a proven strong defensive coach. That won't completely overcome lack of athleticism, but experience + a good defensive system is a very big deal. Of note: IU's best defender last year was Leal, the least athletic guy in our rotation. This team can shoot the ball. Better than any team from the Woodson and Archie eras. (contrast this to the IU women's team this year: they are young and don't have many shooters. It could be rough)

For those deep into the IUFB recruitment world, do we think this is this a signal/message to any potential target?

I really want to believe this staff has a solid plan, and we're not just chasing talent and getting outbid late in the game, because that's what it feels like to me.

Maybe something, maybe nothing: Houston is a finalist for 21yo G-League Center Abdullah Ahmed. Spent the last 2 years playing for the Knicks’ affiliate. Is still waiting for eligibility clearance, but, c’mon. Would assume Houston wouldn’t take both him and Diane. Fwiw

Rozier has signed contracts worth $160,000,000. He's in his last year of this one at 26 mil. And he's still good enough to have probably gotten 1 more short deal. Who in God's name risks that plus their reputation plus their freedom for anything at all? This isn't even a question of being not smart, obviously there are people with serious issues with this stuff, but you have this thing called life effectively licked. God, could he really not seek help?

The thing that gives me some hope was when I was looking back at his statistical profile to get a read on him when he was first hired there wasn’t much of a trend. Some years (like last year at WVU) he had good defensive teams, other years he had teams that were led by their offense. I’m left to assume (hope) he can coach ‘em up at both ends of the floor.

Baylor is a veteran team full of transfers, shoots a lot of threes, and goes 6'3", 6'5", 6'5", 6'6", 6'8", so it appears to be a matchup of similar styles. Should be a nice preview of what we look like against a talented and well-coached team.

Yes. Probably a lot of potential targets to be honest. He's probably just letting everyone know from his neck of the woods that there's something special going on in the 812 area. And there is. But keep in mind, the staff has a 4 hour drive radius approach first and foremost.

Would sure love for Gunner Kiel (vol. 2) to keep his commitment this time haha. But if we’re being completely serious, I see (1) no reason for Arch Manning not to want to transfer here and (2) this staff tells him to take a number.

I have teams I like and teams I dislike. But I root for two schools: Indiana. And whoever is playing Purdue on that particular day.

Ha, yea. When my two most disliked programs play, which is rare, I usually prefer UK because a win means less to them given they’ve had more overall success. If PU beats them they will be extra giddy which is no good.

Bad idea. I see the SEC just suspended a ref in football. I wouldn’t be shocked if they weren’t at least investigating a gambling angle there. The widespread legalization and integration by the leagues of gambling has created a situation where it has permeated every facet of sports. It’s nearly statistically impossible that you haven’t watched a game where a player or official were compromised. They should be looking to draw more distinct boundaries, not loosen them.

I looked at UL 2025 recruiting class since a lot of people compared us with them They have 4 in the class with these ranks according to ON3. This class is ranked 38th 7, 189, 248 and a foreign player This class was signed before Kelsey had coached a game just like it will be with Devries Right now we have a top 100 player and a chance at a top 50 player.

It felt like Allen lived solely in Florida for recruiting. IN/OH/IL/MI has ample talent. The best in Indiana play at Indiana!

Seeing how they've gone about recruiting so far, I have a hard time believing that they thought they were too far behind on a 2027 recruit to catch up. More likely they saw something that made them think he wouldn't be a great fit for the program they're building.

No opinion on the kid at all, haven’t watched a second of him, but if they’re not hard on a 6’11” athlete from Marion County would think it’s way more likely to be the latter than the former.
