The disconnect with fans and IUs high school recruiting in my opinion comes from the fact the basically the last time we had a coach that put in effort on the high school avenue was back with Archie over 4 years ago. Sure Woody had some success with landing highly rated high school kids but none of them were long term recruiting wins. IUs footprint in high school recruiting has been non existent. DeVries seems to get it and has made himself visible in the recruiting world. He seems to have no problem grinding and doing the work even if the results hasn’t shown up in the first cycle. Establish connections on the recruiting trail again for your program and maybe down the road you get IU back in the game that they have sorely been absent from. Looking back at high school recruiting that IU as a program has had since Archie’s last year through this year will make you not feel well. The number of those kids that were only here 1 year to help or left before they could contribute to the program and it’s no wonder the program is where it’s at today. Results might not be there yet but the fact they have a coach willing to roll his sleeves up and actually recruit like the job demands is nice to see in my opinion.9 points -
Feels like it’s a matter of time until college teams start trying to trot out 23-28 year old pros with “eligibility.” CBB needs to be careful. If the sport gets away from college age players I think people will lose interest in a meaningful way (much more than anything NIL or the portal did — which was not much imo). Good job by Izzo to speak out as one of the statesman of CBB (and yea I know he isn’t a saint).7 points

Somebody needs to. For Chrissake, we have full blown European pros, now we have American pros, we have college players who graduated from HS in 2018, 8 figure rosters and when private equity inevitably gets it’s foot in the door uniforms are gonna look like NASCAR. It’s beyond gross and the NCAA is worried about nothing but getting sued and clearly doesn’t even have the concept of a plan.6 points

I like it. Dorn is something of a wild card imo. From the Marion game, the defensive rotations, switches and extensions to perimeter looked pretty good. Marion isn’t good, but at one point it was something like 31-4. That was a result of energetic D. And the shooting was without our best shooter finding his touch. Wilkerson is going to light up teams. it is absolutely going to be fun to watch, and based on the effort and communication I saw I expect our D to improve and adjust during the season. Imagine that, actual adjustments. So looking forward to watching this team grow5 points -

https://www.on3.com/news/how-g-league-players-can-now-play-college-basketball/ Some explanation of the NCAA’s thinking on the G-League situation. If I’m reading this correctly it sounds like any undrafted G-League players still within their 5 year post-HS window will be eligible to make the London Johnson move. Sounds a little murky as far as whether they were in the draft but undrafted vs a kid like Johnson who hasn’t gone through the draft process. The old days of the Fab 5 getting envelopes from Ed Martin seem positively cute now.4 points -
Recruiting has seemingly been fixed with the switch of recruiting coaches. Three top 60 recruits including the two highest ranked players in program history directly out of high school for 2026 both in top 30. Also 2025 has two top-40 recruits. These classes (especially 2026 which is likely to be top-five in country) are in line with other top programs of last few years and is what should have been happening the last few seasons when winning. It was all about switching lead recruiting coaches. The job under the previous recruiter was not commensurate to the results on court. This new one in last year very much is. Glad Moren recognized it and made the change. It shows she expects winning and strong recruiting as much as fans and recognized job was not getting done under previous person.4 points

I agree. Although I strongly believe we will beat UCLA, at Maryland and at Penn State none of them are “sure things”. Who knows how PSU will respond to their new coach, add in their talent and 100k fans and the game could be a challenge. The bummer about PSU is that it has turned into a “ho hum win” or “bad loss”. Cant wait for Saturday and watching our D take care of Nico.4 points -

People just continue to underestimate Moren. Personally, I find it comical. She’s an outstanding coach. Her team is now faster and more athletic. There’s going to be some growing pains as she and the team adjust, and then the team will rise under her coaching. Let the Debbie Doubters keep at it. That’s all just fuel4 points -

I’m really scratching my head over all the angst regarding this game. Cig has proven that he’ll have his team ready to go. We’re playing at home. UCLA will be playing a game when they are normally just getting out of bed. Too many are buying into the media loving the Bruins’ turnaround. Trust in Cig. Trust in Fisher, Monds, Kamara and the rest of the lads. Watch with the quiet confidence that comes with being the superior team. I know, this is new for us. Gotta start thinking and acting like the programs that have been there before.3 points -

In my perspective, mostly because of who we targeted, this is the least impressive recruiting window I can remember. Went hard after 2 PGs, 2 or 3 wings, and 3 or more centers only to land 1 100+ recruit. I wanted the portal anyhow so it’s kinda whatever. But from a program momentum perspective this looks bad. No juice.2 points -

To give you an idea of just how dominant IU was against Marian, which is a pretty good NAIA team with a few former D1 players? At one point, IU was ahead 42-5. The Boston Celtics coaching staff, which includes multiple recent NBA and high-major players (DaSean Butler, Mazzulla, Emile Jefferson, God Shammgod) just played a Mazzulla-dictated game against the Celtics media contingent, and the score was a similar 57-4. Per this article, "The game served as an (unneeded) reminder of the ridiculous disparity between (us) regular people and elite athletes." IU did pretty much the same thing to an above-average NAIA college team. https://www.celticsblog.com/articles/122754/joe-mazzulla-celtics-coaches-media-game-53-points1 point -

Crean had pop for a 2 or 3 seasons. Archie had Romeo and TJD then nothing. Woodson had pop for 2 years and a portal “haul” or at least some Juice. I feel like pre and post NIL is a thing at Indiana. Granted we only put ourselves near the top for 1 Woodson season where he wasted the expenditure. It’s been an entirely disappointing stretch for our fanbase. Usually our 4 year coaches have failed by year 2 and then we suffer through years 3 and 4 with less Juice. This go round, we are trying the incognito route of roster building. ^^This is further proof of the mindset of an extraordinary winner.^^ Sure, Cig wants a fat paycheck and sure he wants his life and his family situation to be good where he is. But he could get those things in lots of places. "But Bloomington is special!" Yes, Bloomington is a really good place, and to IU students, alumni, and fans Bloomington and IU are special. Guess what? Places like Gainesville and State College are similarly special and good places. To Cig Bloomington and IU are simply really good. So what is "special" to Cig? That the leadership that he works alongside be worthy of his trust and respect. And if those highly appreciated leaders in his life aren't there? He is sending an open signal that he will look somewhere that has leadership that he respects. What an incredible endorsement of the University President and AD!1 point

I think we can safely say IU has robbed Peter (the basketball program) to pay Paul (the football program) at the moment. This is probably a very good decision for the university overall and no one should complain given which sport drives revenue. However, it means DeVries will have to learn make do with less resources than any past coach. I will not be surprised if he achieves this, but it probably means NIL for top tier recruits is out of reach right now as many in media have hinted at. DeVries will have to make do with secondary recruits and portal that fit his system which is fine. IU simply doesn't have the money or resources to support both programs at top notch right now it appears and almost all the NIL and Rev Share money is going to football. This puts Thompson and other top recruits price out of reach right now for most part. Its the reality in new world of college sports. Until IU has 80-100K football seat stadiums filled each week, only OSU and Michigan have the deep NIL money to outbid for both. Indiana simply does not with so much support behind football and winning more than one or two of these recruiting battles for blue chippers is not viable until football delivers even more money to athletic budget.1 point
