She was fired from ESPN because of her politics. Aka she isn't a lefty. She's allowed to have opinions. Not sure that makes her a shill but sure go off since those opinions don't align with yours. I love Sage Steele. She's all about IU. We need more people like her.

So our powers as alumni are being taken away by a politician so he can appoint his own stooges. This is what is wrong with America.

Glad to see it. Sage Steele loves Indiana University and loves America. She will be a fantastic person for the job. The stuff/propaganda and otherwise she endured at ESPN and then to be tough enough to do what she feels is right is just a lovely character trait. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners

  4. I feel Ware was easily forgotten about because the fanbase was in such turmoil, but Ware was such a solid player, can you imagine what this upcoming years team would do with a guy like that down low?

The provision that gives the governor full authority over the BOT only applies to IU, it's strictly political. In today's environment they'll be appointed for political reasons. Alumni should have some say over who is on the board, I think it's ridiculous that now only at IU do the alumni not have an elected representative on the board.

  9. Crazy that Buckner scammed IU to enrich his buddy to the tune of $20+ million yet got appointed to another term. We’ll be much better off when he’s off the board.

You called her a shill and cited her pushing Trump's agenda as the reason for being appointed to the BoT. Universities are supposed to be apolitical but let's be real, they have pushed one side's political agenda for decades. Sage is professional and very passionate about Indiana University. I'm glad she has chosen to take on this role.

  11. It may be a symptom of what is wrong with our way of government, presently. As sentient beings, we are blessed to be able to choose. But we must live with the result of those choices. Some people seem to not want to make difficult decisions that require in-depth understanding of issues and critical thinking. And then we all complain about results or lack thereof. Citizens in this democratic republic have all but abdicated their responsibility to provide oversite to the very politicians that are now making those decisions. We have allowed lobbyists, businesses, the concentration of capital, investments and entertainers to take control. The minority of billionaires are making those difficult decisions and gaslighting us all. Lack of education and empathy and social responsibility just about covers it.

All, Remember that this board is a politics-free zone. The mods fully understand that this board rule can restrict conversations on infrequent occasions, but the rule also allows people a place to read about IU sports without things degenerating into a political argument (which is nice!). This thread is veering into partisan politics; understandably, but it won't be allowed to continue down that path. Much appreciated.

It's interesting - most state university boards of trustees are political appointees. Indiana was more or less an outlier until now. Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, most schools in Kentucky all are gubernatorial selections. When you have politicians appointing them, you tend to get more politically charged board members. Doesn't mean they can't be effective.

  28. Several IU offers playing in the Pangos All-American Camp in Las Vegas. College coaches and staff not permitted to attend. Teams have played 2 games and after 2 games Jason Gardner Jr. has recorded 15 assists and just 3 turnovers. Bryson Howard averaging18 ppg. Sammy Jackson is there as well as Collins Onyejiaka. Teams play another game tonight and a 4th Tuesday afternoon. Then the players are divided into 2 squads for the final 2 games called Top 40 and Top 60. By the luck of the draw, Gardner and Onyejiaka are playing on the same team.

So people only care because he renewed Buckner? What about "He falsely suggested that IU was unique in having alumni determine a public university’s board members, even though other state schools including Purdue University still have appointees that are elected by the Purdue Alumni Association."

  32. Jason Gardner for the win in today's first game. On the previous possession he fired a pass to a teammate for an open 3 that tied the game and then this play with 6 seconds left. His best overall game of the event scoring 13 pts on 5-6 FG and added another 7 assists bringing his 4-game total to 29 and just 5 TOs. https://x.com/i/status/1929955473060704574

I would have preferred she didn’t take the position of an elected position — or if she had been elected to her position. My big problem is going backwards in terms of removing elected positions.

  35. On that list, only Brenczewski, and maybe Swanson were likely to every contribute here. Others are the typical transfers that were either injured or near bottom of roster who enter portal at every other program. Cerny is interesting since I assumed he would be drafted and not spend anymore time in college, so was already mentally not factoring him into future. It's the four elite freshman on offense that will tell us a lot and who you hope to keep. As we know, offense is likely to always be elite and question will be if they can find enough good starting pitchers and bullpen guys with defined roles. If Glant is still here and the same issues happen in 2026 which causes team to miss postseason again, then the entire staff needs to be fired. I have defended Mercer and think he gets to much flack. However, if Mercer holds on to a guy in Glant who clearly is not doing his job well similar to Tom Allen and Darren Hiller, and it fails, then everyone needs to be gone regardless. Staff loyalty is a factor and Teri Moren did what was best for the program getting rid of her recruiting coach recently who was not getting job done for someone who likely can. If Mercer is blindly loyal to failing staff as Allen was, unfortunately I can say he is not cut out for the job no matter how well he recruits and develops players.

  36. Yeah Ware was always the better pro prospect, Edey’s game was as a dominant traditional college big, doesn’t translate well to the League. Ware’s game should continue to grow, bigtime upside. Edey may carve out a role player role.
    1 point
  37. It's that 6.13 fouls per 48 minutes that made Edey's rookie season so special. ;) In all seriousness, Ware and Edey had fairly similar and nice rookie seasons. And every GM in the league would prefer Ware to Edey going into year two. Miami is building around Herro, Bam, and KelEl.

  38. Agents now call coaches first to negotiate salaries. My hope is that minor sports can still somehow still be funded. A few small colleges have already dropped some minor sports, and I'm afraid that trend will continue. The NCAA has limited scholarships for the major sports with the theory (hope?) that the "extra" scholarhips will go to minor sports. Who says those scholarships will go anywhere? My fear is that college athletics may become strictly professional with just a few sports remaining.

  39. Fascinating article. This year was a little extreme with so many people leaving at once, but CTM makes it clear that this is the new way, i.e. dealing with agents, having recruits declare what their monetary expectations are, players literally GETTING PAID MONEY TO PLAY! In the old days, it was illegal; now it is the rule. Will high school recruits in the future (and not just portal transfers) all have agents? Will college basketball "stratify", with the Big Powers going all in on the $20 m., and lower level teams spending way less, or even remaining amateurs with no NIL?

You obviously didn’t bother reading what I wrote. I said more power to her for expressing opinions she believes in (and I agree that was fired from espn for her politics….which is their right as a private company). But call it what it is….this is a government takeover of a single BOT because they don’t like the politics and they are simply instilling governor yes men and women.

  44. I think to have a meaningful conversation about it, it helps to understand a few things about how it’s calculated. A few points: -DBPM is calculated as BPM - OBPM, box score does a much better job tracking offensive impact than defensive. It’s just a different regression on the same set of counting stats. -It’s a calculation based on average per 100 possessions played, so it’s less accurate on a small sample size like Leal’s -Because it’s literally just BPM - OBPM, assists and blocks get weighted differently based on position. That’s why it usually loves big guys like Danny Wolf and Jokic disproportionately. https://www.basketball-reference.com/about/bpm2.html this is an interesting read if you have the time. I think Leal is a very good defender, not sure about elite or anything, just don’t think DBPM is the KPI to build a strong argument on. Just inherently harder for advanced metrics to capture defensive impact. Eye test is important IMO.

  46. Blaming fans is a hallmark of a toxic program culture. Our program's culture has sucked for the better part of a decade and it desperately needs to change. That isn't happening with guys like Leal and Goode around.

  48. High level shooter? Imagine us bringing in someone with leal stats in the transfer portal. Let alone running plays for him lol. This place would loose it. Leal looked scared to death to shoot the ball half the time. Don’t even get me started with how he looked handling the ball against pressure basically backing ppl down from 80 ft. I love that Woodson played him last year but it had a lot more to do with being sick of watching the others on the team play. Hell I’d would have rather watch Dallas James lay then half the guys last year. I really hope we start to get more talented players than leal and those guys because practice/team hype emergency bench guys. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  49. If he comes back, which I really hope is he doesn’t, here’s to hoping DD doesn’t allow the Mike Woodson victim mentality to spread to the rest of the team.

  50. The mods asked to drop this. I don’t see how it’s bashing Leal to make a factual statement. Stu said Gallo and Leal knew Woody’s limitations better than anyone. I agree with that. So them recognizing the basketball situation was not good but staying for the financial situation is basically what it boils down to. I don’t fault anyone for that! But do I think that’s evidence of a serious basketball player that I want being part of a brand new roster and rebuild? Combined with his abilities on the court… nope. No hard feelings. Just don’t think IUBB should be giving out spots for sentimental reasons. He’s not a tremendous value add on or off the court IMO so why not go get someone with multiple years of eligibility to round out the roster. All I’m saying. Not bashing.
