    They Fired Tom Allen!

With the Colts, I think it's just Irsay's continued attempts to make the organization feel like one big happy family. He tries so hard to not be like his dad, even if it ultimately proves detrimental to the team (Bob Irsay once fired a coach at halftime of a preseason game). In college athletics, there's just so much pressure on people to perform or be replaced. It's absolutely crazy, and I'm not sure it will change for the better any time soon. Everyone (including us) wants to win, and win now, and they're willing to throw money at anyone who appears to be an upgrade over what they currently have. The teams who have successful coaches are paying them, because if they don't, someone else will. It doesn't take much to impress disgruntled fans and their short attention spans these days, because if they aren't busy yearning for a time when they used to be good, they're usually wondering why they aren't keeping up with the Joneses. Then you have all the armchair QB's who send threatening emails to athletic directors saying they'll cancel their season tickets if nothing changes, players transferring, graduating and transferring again, recruits changing their minds while the ink dries on their LOI's...throw all this in a blender, and you have the world of college athletics. This stuff is infuriating, and athletic directors have little control over it, so I think in some small way, huge contracts allow them to feel like they have some control over their own program.

  3. Dude’s getting paid $5 million a year. When the team he’s in charge of sucks? Yeah, he gets the blame. He recruits the players. He hires the coaches. He’s in charge.

  4. Are you inferring that is bad? In the world of IU football, 2-3 and 5-3 is a long term extension…..

  6. Yep, Purdue should be our benchmark. Be better than Purdue consistently and we’d be mostly happy as a fanbase I bet. Not too high of a standard, and little reason we can’t aim realistically for that. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners mobile app

  7. I think since exhibition games are included in season tickets they have to be full games. It’s the secret scrimmages where coaches can change up how they play the games and have stoppages

  8. I rue the day. I hope we replace him with someone similar. My fear is that it will be a personality who wants to be the show. Don is the voice of IU basketball and football since the early '70s. He has done this with class and humility even through the numerous broadcasting awards he has won. Never has it been about him. I know he doesn't need me singing his praises and the thread is not about him, but it had to be said for everyone for whom he has been IU sports. Now on topic, I like anyone who provide insight into what's happening on the court or field. What bugs me the most is when broadcaster guy and color guy go off on a tangent that has nothing to do with what is happening in real time in front of them.

Madden drove me nuts when I was younger. Like many other things in my life I've learned to appreciate him after he was gone. His doodles man.... Whomever brought up Enberg was also spot on. I'll add Dan Dierdorf as a fantastic color guy. There was a time on MNF where it was Michaels, Dierdorf and Gifford....to me that was as good as it gets for a broadcasting team. The voice is important. There is a female announcer, don't remember her name, whose voice just grates on me. I have nothing against women in sports broadcasting, I love Sage Steele and others, but that one not so much.

  15. Robbie Hummel is the best color guy for me right now. In football to me the best PBP guys were/are Al Michaels and Brett Mesberger (this one won't be popular). Their voices, to me, are transcendent. Sent from my SM-G996U using Tapatalk

  16. IU WINS IU WINS IU WINS The women play tough second half defense and end their season with a 1-0 win. It's been a rough year for the team but they never gave up and I'm happy they were able to end their season on a positive note. For the match they fired off a total of 15 shots; 8 on goal and 8 corners. Michigan had 11 shots but only 4 on goal and 3 corners.

  17. Love me some Sean McDonough for any sport. Jason Benetti is fantastic. I really like Bilas and Dakich when they aren’t ranting. I’m actually not as big on Hummel as some. His work on Purdue games is really irritating, but otherwise he’s fine. Fire Stephen Bardo into the furthest possible reaches of our galaxy. I have a hunch that we aren’t far off from Fisch hanging them up. I wonder who could possibly try to fill his shoes because they’re large and un-fillable.

  22. Gus used to be great... Back when his excitement was more authentic... Commentators definitely aren't as good as they used to be I feel. It is nice though when you get an old coach or player that's ready to really talk about the game and details in the game... Just not many of those anymore. They are almost there to be a separate show of entertainment instead of being a part of the game.

Walton was the lead national announcer for NBC back in the 90's and was really good. As someone said earlier, these guys get older and become paradies of themselves, etc., but Walton used to be good on the analysis side.

  26. Sorry, I was just never on board with Coach Allen. I think he is a great guy. But, he's only had two good seasons at IU (I guess we can call 2020 a full season). 0-3 in bowl games. They completely choked in the Gator Bowl and lost to a team with a losing record in the Outback Bowl. 5-15 since the contract extension. I don't care about the low standards for football...IU and their fans deserve better. I see him here another year or two unfortunately. I agree with most, I don't see a buyout happening after they just extended him in March of 2021. Side note: Why do teams/athletic programs reward coaches for okay results? Colts gave Reich, along with Ballard, a contract extension after ONE freakin playoff win. They've been a .500 team since the contract extension. Just like Glass giving Crean one after ONE good year. I don't get it...

  27. Two interesting stats. At the half IU had 70 rushing yards but ended up with 62 for the game (yes, -8 rushing yards in the second half) At the half Henderson had 4 carries for 31 yards (7.8 yards per carry). At the end of the game Henderson had 4 carries for 31 yards (ie…did not run the ball once in the second half). That’s puzzling unless, unbeknownst to me, he was injured.

  28. The problem is that this team is not really good at anything. Our line play is terrible. I don't blame the QB for any of our problems. If I were him, I'd just hope to get through the game in one piece. It was a huge problem last year and is a huge problem this year. That tells me that our current staff can't address glaring issues. We are Indiana so we are stuck with what we have until we can afford to do something different. The CTA era has peaked will be circling the drain until we can pay for him to go somewhere else.

  29. Finkel would be a grand slam but I highly doubt he envisions IU being a positive contributor to his career path.

  30. That’s interesting to hear. For some reason I don’t remember him announcing back then. I’ll never forget the game a couple of years or so ago when he interviewed his buddy Bruce Hornsby, on a split screen, for 20 minutes during an IU game. Couldn’t believe it and was also surprised the network let it go on for so long. Kind of funny now but I was pissed during the game.

I fell in love with GJ's call when Oladipo hit that half court shot. To me, yes he is over the top but in a way I still enjoy. He just seems to have a natural enthusiasm that isn't forced which makes it bearable to me. I get why others are put off by it though. Sent from my SM-G996U using Tapatalk

  35. I know. I, as a kid, used to listen to baseball broadcasts on the radio. I've heard my share of "colorful" broadcasters. Not my cup of tea. That's one of the reasons I have enjoyed Don Fischer so much during his time doing IU games. To me, that's how it should be done.

  36. I understand your concerns, but I don't think that CMW and CTA are in anyway comparable. CMW is an accomplished player at the highest level and a respected coach there as well. CTA is none of those things. The basketball program may well fall off some next season but I don't see it being as far as you apparently do. The '24 class will be the one that either propels us forward or not. Even CBK had down years following highly successful years. I'll wait to see how this plays out. I just know that I'm more comfortable with CMW at the helm than I have been with anyone since Coach Knight.

  40. I enjoy Dakich. I don’t mind the rants. He isn’t always right but he’s confident, lol. He’s also energetic. Bennetti does a good job. Hummel is solid, just boring. Bilas is annoying AF to me. His arrogance. His ESPN/Duke/UNC/ACC lovefest. Just don’t like him. He’s smart and actually knows his basketball really well just the ESPN slobber fest is nauseating. Walton is kinda fun for a game I have medium interest in, but he’s way out in his own planet. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners

  47. Maybe it's a generational thing, but announcers like Vitale and now Johnson become over the top parodys of themselves as fame and popularity increases. I want announcers who can call a game with insight without being the show themselves. My opinion only and your mileage may vary.

  48. The Watshot made Seth Davis’ list of the 20 most influential games since 2000 on The Athletic. One of 3 regular season games (the other 2 involved Duke) on the whole list. The Cayut Cousins can whine about us being irrelevant all they want, but this game matters.

  49. All, The board is easier to read and navigate when a thread is on topic. That way, readers know what they're getting, and where to look for information or discussion. So, let's get this thread back to Bryson Tiller, and move the discussion about the state of financial changes in college basketball back to the NIL or TV deal thread. Thanks
