I’m honestly shocked how untalented /unathletic this roster is just comparing it to Devries WVU roster and that’s even with two of his best players out last year. He definitely had more options available this year with our resources than at WVU

Either our resources are really not that good or the delay in hiring his full staff really trashed our portal effort. I reserve judgement on coaches until year 3 but you have to make changes to the staff after this year. No way can you keep the same scouting responsibilities in place. After missing our priority targets, we did not fare well at all. This roster is so bad it's actually kinda hard for me to judge how good or bad DDV's in game coaching really is. I can't even be upset about IUBB anymore, just apathetic to the games being played and hoping for a better portal haul next year.

Woody was lucky enough to walk into an athletic roster with an All-American. To his credit, he did get TJD to stay and do most of the work for him lol.

Imagining Woodson with the current roster is borderline unimaginable.

Woodson wouldn’t have recruited these guys. He’d have laughed and lit another cigar if you showed him baileys tape.

Devries had deep pockets and this is what his eye for talent got us. He’s somehow better than Woody who saw Ware as an NBA talent and was right? Woody can’t coach but c’mon…

Coach DeVries is too laid back in my opinion.  It doesn't appear that he hates losing enough.  You don't have to be Danny Hurley on the sideline but show some passion.

Personally I’m more of the opinion he knows what he has for players and can’t do what he wants so he has to accept —-this—- (gestures wildly to the team on the floor).

Not absolving him of blame but it’s hard cupboard on that bench.

Ya like hypothetically you put Kevin Overton and Amani hansberry on this roster instead of enright and Bailey, two people that played for Devries in the past, and i think we’re pretty good. Idrk what happened this year other than just a total failure in scouting

This is a good post. First there is nobody else like Cig. He is a once in a lifetime coach imo. Enjoy it while he is here.

I think you hit the nail on the head about the mid major type build. I’ve heard people talk about the way to win is to get old and stay old. I think that’s what they tried and did it with mid majors. Conerway and Wilkerson are hits imo. The rest are not. Dorn would be fine off the bench on a tournament team.

Fix the roster build for next year and we could have something. It’s why I’m not giving up on DeVries yet. We can discuss this more as we go through the portal. I believe we were of similar opinions during the portal last spring.

You have to have a system to put the players in.  If you listen to Cig he always talks “we” but he is including his years going back to Indiana PA.  They do this, they do that.  He has a system.  Each position is taught and refined a particular set of skills.   They coach the chit out of them.  Then they prepare and adjust.

Devries doesn’t appear to have that.  No system.  So a bunch of paid to players look completely disjointed.   What is frustrating is he has the model sitting down the hall.  Just copy it.

Best case scenario is this year being a total anomaly because of all the setbacks of coming in and blowing it up (not that there was much to begin with) and not having a staff / core of players that you can plug and play. With 6 seniors leaving and very few players worth a pay increase to retain, I hope we can nail the scout in the portal this time around. Ultimately it's on DDV for not having things in place from the start... we're all paying the price for that now. But I don't think it's an insurmountable task now that he has his bearings here. He's had a lot of moves the past 3 seasons. Gotta show what he's learned next season and that starts now by cultivating the right portal targets. Hopefully those are identified correctly.

This gives me some hope.  But then again I look at Reed and wonder how they missed so badly scouting him and I am alarmed…

We’ll see…

I like DeVries, I really do. I just don't see how this gets much better than a bubble team next year too?

He's created no momentum and then has to go recruit an entire new team this off-season.

I don't see how DeVries has the money, cache or momentum to go recruit an entire roster essentially that would be anything more than a bubble team.

Again I like DeVries, I just don't have much confidence he can get us out of this mess.

I don’t see a case to give CDD more money if this keeps up.  If he can’t make the tourney with $10M, pretty unlikely he does much with $15M.  Keep that money with football, they know what they’re doing.  MBB can stay at $10M until CDD or some other bball coach proves they know what they’re doing.  Just my opinion.

Frankly, I don’t see a point in giving Devries even $10 million. Why spend $10 million to get a fringe tournament team when that’s another $10 million (or $5 million if you want to give Devries a little bit) you could give to the best college football coach in the country? IU basketball just seems like a lost cause. The program is dead and buried. Football makes so much more money and matters so much more than basketball in the current college sports landscape.

But my (probably unpopular) opinion is that every single penny of Nil/revenue share should go to football. It’s the only sport that really matters anymore.

Anyone remember why Devries didn’t bring any WVA players.  That’s the key to many of these coaching moves — they have a core of their guys to start

Would anyone else bench DeVries and start Sisley? Get the freshmen more experience and ready for next year.

I would think Trent might be contemplating looking for greener pastures. Hope not. Wouldn’t blame him though.

I haven't paid much attention to this, but does DeVries ever work the officials? Like, really go after them and intimidate them? Having a coach who does that can completely flip a game where things aren't going well. Washington had a 7-1 foul advantage at one point in the second half. Nebraska players packed enough suitcases to fill an airplane last weekend, no whistles. Iowa had a dude travel twice on the same play today, nothing. Wilkerson guarding a guy who trips on a nail, foul.

Assembly Hall used to be worth about 10 points because our crowd could influence how a game was officiated. Today, I'd say it's near zero, maybe even a net negative. Nobody dreads coming here anymore.

I’ve said that about all of our coaches recently.  Assembly Hall isn’t as loud or intimidating as it used to be either.  Fans and noise can influence the whistle big time. We haven’t been good in this realm since Crean.  Goes hand in hand.
