It's kind of what he's done every year here though. 1st year was the run in the BTT. 2nd year after that awful 3 game stretch of blowouts and of course last year in last 5 or so regular season games.

He is an assistant on the team.  I expect him not to publicly be out there trashing himself.  "Yeah, world.  My boss sucks, these employees suck, I suck...."  I don't expect guys to actively go and get themselves canned.  Be real.

I don't feel like anyone on this board has the connections to comment on Beard's current drinking habits. Hell, there's only a few people on this board who even have legit connections in IU. If you don't like him because of his "baggage", good for you. I'm to the point where I'm willing to take some baggage in exchange for success. Don't kid yourself, there are plenty of people up on a soapbox right now about his baggage but would shut up real quick if he made a deep tournament run. Stevens is 1A and Beard is 1B, after that you've got your pick of relative unknowns with "promise".

We have a current coach who has been violent in public and no repercussions took place.

i don’t condone violence but IU is not without issues and Beards was quite some time ago without further issue that we know of

Exactly 100% spot on!  We have to get off that holier than thou thinking and get in line with the SEC!  There aren’t any of us that don’t have skeletons in our closet, it’s time to quit throwing rocks in a glass house!

You can't hire him, institute a zero tolerance policy, and then be surprised when he continues to do what he's always done. Do what you can to minimize it (e.g., give him a full-time driver) and keep it out of the public.

A zero tolerance policy would do more harm than good because then you have to enforce it when he inevitably screws up.

I'd also be inclined to hire him, but that could change if I learned the severity of the alcoholism / domestic abuse is worse than what we know.

Anybody who can easily move past that just does not understand the nature of DV and how it escalates. Who is to say next time he has a drunken outburst he won’t actually kill someone? No that’s not being dramatic, that’s what somebody who violently chokes their partner is showing they’re capable of doing. It’s not holier than thou, it’s making sure we don’t bring someone into our community who has shown themselves to have a problem with drinking, making poor choices, and becoming violent… that can lead to tragedy quite easily and is entirely avoidable. 

Not looking for a choirboy (at all) but I can’t get over that being in his nature regardless of charges being dropped. The good news is IU won’t ever hire him. We can win with plenty of other guys. If we did, I’d just root for Hurley… you know, a coach that’s actually won national titles… lolz
